Re: Catnip for split ends?
Using catnip as a prewash only.
I still think that catnip for me, is used best as an after shampoo treatment.
However, catnip does contain enough oil, from my experience, that if enough were applied as a prewash treatment, it could in theory, replace other prewash oilings.
I would still use it after shampooing though (with whatever one uses as shampoo), to condition.
Re: Catnip for split ends?
Washing hair or skin in hot water is not recommended. It can be very drying.
Yesterday, when I went to wash my hair, I adjusted the water temperature to warm, not hot.
However, there was enough activity going on, on my apartment line to change that to almost scalding and cool water when I went to use my shampoo, so my hair before I lathered, was subjected to every temperature going, lol.
I readjusted the water temperature, while swearing a blue streak, lol.
My hair suffered no ill effects from the too hot water, because in part, I believe, my hair was pretty oily from too much catnip, used during my last wash.
Re: Catnip for split ends?
ktani, how long have you been using the catnip treatments? And how long is your hair now? What are the main differences in your hair now that you're using catnip soaks? I hope I'm not repeating questions you've already answered elsewhere in this thread.....

I have been using catnip for almost 4 years.
I have gone from very fragile hair, with a lot of split ends and breakage to much stronger hair, with no split ends and minimal breakage.
My length is past bsl, pulled straight down in the back, 2 inches short of my waist.

Well then, ktani, I think you have just become my new hair idol! Thanks for all the great catnip tips!

You are most welcome but I can only speak for what catnip has done for my hair.
I do not consider myself a hair idol. My hair is still, IMO, genetically challenged, compared to some of the great hair I see on these boards but I am making the most of what I have to deal with.
Others have found that catnip has helped their hair too.
Re: Catnip for split ends?
Interestingly enough, I think that catnip tea has removed a great deal of my build-up! I suppose that's due to its astringent property? I hear that witch hazel is an astringent and removes build-up.
However, I'm still finding catnip tea drying, and not too effective as a detangler, even after the hour soak. I'm going to continue trying it out as an after-CWC hair rinse, followed by a few drops of jojoba.
As for the bagging part: what I found to work well for me was to drop my hair into a regular plastic shopping bag, pull the ends tightly against my forehead, then hold them together with a mid-sized chip clip. I'd tuck the plastic behind my ears, too. There would still be a bit of dripping, of course, but nothing a towel draped over my shoulders couldn't contain.
Re: Catnip for split ends?
By the way, for my second "C" in CWC: thanks to whomever recommended to towel-dry hair before applying conditioner! It really does help with absorption, and I don't need to use nearly as much product.

Catnip can remove some things, from my experince, but not product build-up.
For me, that gradually washed out when I stopped using what caused it.
My ends and hair were strill dry, only when build-up was still on my hair, when I first started to use catnip, not when it was gone and I increased catnip timing and started to bag it, to help it penetrate my hair, as much as it can.

The build-up did go away mighty fast, though. Maybe it wasn't really permanent, deeply encrusted build-up! It's hard to say, since in the last few days I've actually tried a few things, and it's entirely possible that something else was responsible. Doesn't hurt to get a leg up, though!
It's definitely encouraging that catnip results can improve over time. If that's true, the main hurdle for me will be finding a spare hour every day for bagging. In the meantime, I'm experimenting with a quick CWC followed by catnip+citric acid rinse followed by jojoba leave-in. That went well today, but it's WAY too early to tell if it's a keeper routine. If the build-up comes back now that I've wiped the slate pretty much clean, it'll be back to the drawing board! (If you don't mind my mixing all those metaphors.)
