Thanks Ktani. I'm going to keep with it :)

Re: Catnip for split ends?
Ktani - if you leave the nip tea on too long, is that when you see it causing more tangles?
Also - it's not going to help my existing split ends (which, curses are showing up on this no-cone diet, but I can tell they are pre-existing little brats that the cones smushed together), correct?
And do I need to use it for the hour for conditioning, or is that for the color? I don't want the color as much as I'd like my hair to stop splitting.
I need to find someone to do an S&D on what I can't see of my head. I may finagle my BF into that yet.

No, I experienced some problems when I brewed the tea longer than 5 hours. My hair became over moisturized and started knotting.
Nothing can help existing split ends except removing them with scissors.
I find the hour best for both.

Re: Catnip for split ends?
Yup, I know the splits need to just get removed - wasn't sure if the nip would help my hair look a little less frizzed for a few days or not. Oh well, will make someone I know trim them off for me!
Also - how does your hair get over moisturized? My hair will gladly take up all the oil I give it - and it's new obession with aloe instead of cones is a bit sad.

I think catnip def. makes the hair look less frizzy. I had great results using it so far. I wanted to post a picture but the albums are not working properly the last couple of days. It definitely made my hair very easy to detangle and it airdried nicely both on it's own as a leave-in and after rinsing out, appling conditioner, and then light camellia oiling. The hardest part of this routine for me is keeping up with the 1 hour soaks each night!
-
Re: Catnip for split ends?
Sissy- thanks for the reassurance!
After my first catnip wash my hair feels... strange. Not bad, but... different. It's really light, like it was when I tried cone-free, only without the disastrous tangles, frizz, breakage and inability to be satiated with moisture. It's very shiney and was about the same to detangle as it usually is with my normal conditioner. I spent an hour or so S&Ding tonight, so I'll be starting form a less-damaged place to see if it makes a difference in maintaining the less-splits. I still have a lot left... my hair splits like crazy, but I'm hoping that this can make a difference.
How often does everyone usually apply this? I usually only wash once a week, with WO rinses in between to keep it fresh. Will I need to apply the catnip more regularly to get the benefits? That would mean more frequent washes, then, which I'm not sure how my hair will react to... it's kind of liking the minimalism thing.
So far though, I'm pretty happy. :)

Re: Catnip for split ends?
I am not up for the day but I woke up super early.
Sissy, do you normally wash your hair daily? If not, there is no need to do catnip soaks so often.
I do one every time I wash my hair only.

I find a difference in catnip brewing time and the moisture level of my hair. 6 hours and over gave me too much moisture and my hair was not frizzy but it curled more and I got what I call curlover on strands. The hair was prone to curling over on itself and the result was knotting in places.

Re: Catnip for split ends?
this seemed to dry my hair out a little bit..even after an smt. maybe that wasnt the best time to try it. but i was trying the smt, so i thought why not?

Well, I do shower every night and CO wash each night. I do this because I get greasy looking at the scalp easily and because I'm trying to lose weight and workout and this makes my hair dirty and sweaty on a daily basis. Therefore, I was trying to catnip each night. I have the day off today as I have several medical appointments so I slept in then showered this morning and did NOT have time to do the catnip soak. However, I hope to do it most times I wash. Last night I went to bed with my hair saturated in Argan 3 oil and Yes to Carrots conditioner so I had a nice overnight treatment :)

Re: Catnip for split ends?
So, day three since I put the catnip in and I LOVE MY HAIR! It's so soft and shiney and silky, this is the best conditioner I've ever tried by far. I've only done it once, but if it stays like this I am HOOKED!

Re: Catnip for split ends?
I reported this in the Nivea thread but it really belongs here.
I exfolitae my skin gently with my hands in the shower. I only do my catnip treatment once a week and exfoliate my face at the end.
Catnip has been mentioned online for wrinkes. I do not have those but I have had dry skin lines this winter although my face has not felt dry from washing (with no timing) using catnip.
On Monday night, and tonight before going out, I exfoliated my face after washing it with catnip and applied more, let it dry on my skin and stay there for 1 hour while I got ready to go out and do other things. I rinsed it off after the one hour mark.
For the second time in a row, my skin is awesome (it stayed awesome between Monday night and now too) but the dry skin lines are now gone (even the ones that were showing under my eyes). My forehead lines are diminshed. My skin feels amazing. The bumps I had gotten this week from overdoing my sunblock are completely gone. I am thrilled.

hey, that's great news Ktani! Sounds like catip works well for the skin too. I guess I shouldn't get annoyed when it drips down my face while I'm doing my catnip tea soak then :)

Try exfoliating your face first, before the hair treatment.
I only developed dry skin lines on my face recently. A new classroom at school with extremely dry air and bad ventilation. I exfoliate my hands and arms and apply catnip there during my hair treatment and my hands stay incredibly soft unless I overdo the liquid hand soap, while cleaning. I do not wear gloves. I just never thought of doing a treatment on my face.
The best part is that during the hour, there are no drips (the catnip tea dries fast) and you cannot see it on the skin. Just rinse it off an hour later. No grease or discomfort.

Re: Catnip for split ends?
I've been using bud-only infusions for two months and have been absolutely loving it. Sometimes I use it as a leave-in, never have crunchy ends, stickiness, dullness, or any of the other reported side effects of using it as a leave-in.
Last night I got the idea to mix in some newly dried leaves, and I don't like this mixture nearly as much. My hair just doesn't feel as nice and soft.
Any idea why the leaves make such a radical difference?
-
I am sorry if this has been replyed over and over, but can catnip also make fine (F) hair strands seem more like a medium (M)? My color is golden blonde, not very light, will it change my color? And how much should I buy? The only catnip I foulnd was in a pet store and it is said to be a powder, 20 grams. Is it to be used regularly? Thank you so much.
ETA: Any experiences with use mixed with conditioner or/and cassia?

The leaves contain more tannins and less oils than the buds. My mix contains both, with lots of buds in it. My ends are soft and are not dry or crunchy in the least.

Catnip makes my hair very full and soft. My hair is a mix of fine and medium testures. The catnip colour is light yellow between ash and yellow but it is not gold. It may affect your colour slightly.
I have never used the powder form. I buy cut and sifted leaves and buds from the pet store. The powder should be fine. You would need less than 1 level teaspoon for the equivalent.
I have never used cassia but it contains coatings like conditioner, that in my opinion would interfere with catnip conditioning your hair as well as it may otherwise, on its own. Try it and see how you like it, several different ways.

I searched the thread and forum but didn't come up with anything.
Has anyone made or tried catnip steeped in oil?
I have a huge amount of harvested catnip flowers and leaves and was thinking of trying this.

Catnip has its own oils. I have not needed anything else added to it. Those who do oil after a catnip treatment have reported need very little oil needed.

After I have rinsed out my catnip treatment my hair can only take 3 drops of Camellia Oil max. If I try to use more it looks greasy and I have quite a bit of hair.

You may find that you do not need the extra oil after a while.

Ktani, this raises a point I've been wondering about: Is it the volatile oils in catnip that give it its effect on hair & skin? My intuition is yes, but it does seem you're the person to ask... I've been toying with the idea of making a tincture of it, for use in bathwater. I know, simpler to just infuse some of and add that to the water - but I was thinking more in terms of giving it as gifts. If it would even work, that is. : )

I have made my own catnip oil infusion in sweet almond oil and don't have to use very much of it! It leaves my hair very soft and shiny.

Re: Catnip for split ends?
Thanks for the information Ktani and Little Cherry - I belive I will experiment. My thinking was just that I might be more consistent if I make infused catnip oil for a (that will have a longer shelf life) than catnip tea. I know it isn't much difficulty to make the tea - I drink enough herbal and black tea to confirm that, :D but I feel that an oil might suit my conditioning needs better from a time perspective in that I can whack it on, tie my hair up and wash it later. I think its the wet hair thing actually now that I write about it.

If that is what you are more comfortable with that is what you need to do. I go by the results I get that I am after.

Re: Catnip for split ends?
I was wondering if washing CO is sufficient for cleaning the hair prior to doing a catnip rinse or is it better to do shampoo?
I have a ton of coconut oil in my hair right now due to a heavy overnight oiling that needs to be washed out and I wanted to try the catnip today but wasn't sure if the conditioner would leave a residue. It would be the V05 Vanilla Mint Tea one if it matters. :)

Catnip for me did not work well over conditioner.

Thanks ktani! I'll plan on using shampoo. :)

Depending on the kind of and how much conditioner you use, you may be able to remove the oil with a CO, and then shampoo off or clarify out the conditioner. Oil can be difficult to remove. The shampoo need only be one without additives or a shampoo for "normal" hair, not a harsh clarifying one, in some cases.
I have a friend who was using shampoos and conditioners that were moisturizing. She got build-up. I suggested that for the next while, she switch to a shampoo for normal hair to help remove the residue. It did make a significant difference for her. She was not going to use catnip though. She was just having problems with tangling and unruly hair because of the build-up problem.

I'm all about trial and error :D
Has anyone tried pure catnip extract from the pet store that comes in a spray bottle? I wonder if this would work if diluted in water?

Not that I can recall.
