I have never seen Hagen catnip, is it a UK thing?
No, it is an international brand. They grow what they sell here in Ontario and no doubt beyond in Canada, in Quebec. They probably grow the catnip elsewhere, near to where they sell it.
This is the size I buy. Catit is their organic brand.
Thanks :) I think I'll try some when I run out
You are most welcome!
I really like it but it is not the only brand to try IMO. Walmart may still carry this and it is cheaper than Hagen. I may try it.
I am using Cosmic Catnip as well, and it seems to be working well for me. I am not using it for coloring purposes, just preventative because I have dyed my hair red since 2005 with actual dye (professional and store bought), not henna. I am sure splits are just part of my future as I grow out. I absolutely LOVE the softness I get. I call it my "bunny" hair. It is just like petting a bunny :).
It is hard for me to get the "me" time to leave it in for an hour, but it is really worth it. I am sure my hair thanks me every time!
Update
I solved the hair "roll over" problem. I just applied catnip carefully to the length in 3 sections , a little bit at a time 3 times before pinning it up. I rinsed everything out as usual. On slightly damp hair, I smoothed the length with the flat of my hands and wet my hands a bit before doing so.
Result: smooth, soft, shiny hair that did not react to today's humidity and did not snag even a little, from the high winds (I wore my hair down, as usual.
I do not like catnip left in. Rinsed out after it is applied, bagged and timed, works best for me.
This is the brand I'm currently using, it was the only one they had at the grocery store where I work. I think I may have preferred Cosmic Catnip though. I only used it once though, and that emptied the contaner. (Yes, I used the cat's stash ;))
I'm still enjoying it though, thats for sure! My only problem is that I shower every day, before work, and lately I've been forgetting to brew it the night before.
You owe your cat, lol. I am glad that you are enjoying catnip use.
It appears to be "addictive" to humans as well as cats, lol, at least for use on hair.
With brands of catnip it can depend on whatever batch you get. I suggest trying a brand about 3 times to test consistant quality, providing you like the results well enough that you get with the first batch.
While I prefer to use organic catnip, I started out using regular pet store catnip and that worked very well. It is a personal decision. I think either is fine.
Another wonderfully relaxed school schedule day, (yesterday too, I start summer break soon), so I had time to organize some research for here.
Some catnip information - according to this source, catnip use goes back to Roman times. I have read sources that trace it back even further in Asia.
I just ordered some organic catnip. I got looking at the links that have been posted here, and saw that my grocery store catnip doesn't look anything like the pictures. It's just green, with no white or colored flecks. I'm going to try the organic stuff to see if that gives me better results. I've seen a lot of improvement using it, but I still do have splits and find white dots all the time.
I just ordered some catnip-seeds, so it will take a while before I get to see any results since I need to grow and dry the catnip first :p
ETA: I'm not growing it only for my hair, but mostly because I make a lot of cat-toys that I fill with catnip and give to friends (or their cats)
Update
I altered my catnip application somewhat Monday, by increasing the amount used on the length, not enough to make my hair separate or look oily and it is day 4.
My hair has held up against humidy all week, still does not appear oily and feels clean. I could wash it tomorrow but it does not appear that it will need it until about Sunday or Monday. No "roll over". Directed application works this way. I just poured a little bit of catnip over sections of the length 3 times instead of pouring it over the length once in a greater amount, before pinning it up. It absorbed beautifly and I rinsed out all catnip, at end of the treatment procedure, as usual. This method is a keeper. I am very happy. It has been a great week, with enough weather variation, for me to be sure of the results!
This is how I have been applying it to my length and have also found that this works very well.
I've still had no need for additional conditioner and can leave my hair 5-7 days between washes without it feeling oily or in need of a wash.
I was having a problem trying to colour my white/silver hair closest to my scalp but I think I have solved this now. I pour an amount of catnip on a cotton wool pad and hold it on the difficult areas for a short while. This appears to be working and the hair is picking up more colour.
Brilliant idea with the cotton wool! I just hold the catnip over those areas with my hand for a few seconds, while applying it. The extra catnip on the length is something I had wanted to do for extra colour as well, for a while. It has helped with that too.
The split end prevention has worked for me, with my old method of application on the length, beautifully. I was just having more length reaction to humidity. The top of my hair, where there is more grey, and where I apply more catnip anyway, has not reacted to humidity the same way, so that it why I realized I needed to do the same thing to the length, where the "roll over" problem was appearing.
I don't have any splits but would be interested to try it for it's many benefits. I have a bag of dried catnip now, but I don't think I will use it tonight because I don't know how my hair would end up, going for a night out so.
I wonder if it does make hair slippery? Does it weigh down the hair? I usually have problems with those two if I use something that is too moisturizing.
Some people are "genetically blessed" with hair that is more resistant to the stresses (dryness, mechanical damage, conventional chemicals), that can cause split ends and breakage. I am not one of them, lol. You are fortunate. Catnip though has been reported to help prevent split ends for a number of people besides me, and they have different hair types, textures and routines.
Catnip is not heavy, just the opposite. The amount of slip you can get will depend to some degree on what if any conditioning residue is on your hair from the shampoo or conditioner, or both, that you have been using. I have been able not to use conditioner or anything else on my hair following catnip, for a long time and others have found that too, so lack of slip has not been a problem. Some people like to use a leave-in or oil afterwards. Catnip leaves my hair very full, so that it appears thicker than it actually is, much thicker looking than using conditioner ever did. Here is the Catnip Article.
Yes, I find that too. My grey on the length is not that noticable (I have been staining it for a long time) but my colour does look better with extra catnip used there. I have been getting more grey, in streaks, on the top. My length is older and the catnip stain there is pretty good. Now it is even better!
I forgot that I was steeping my catnip the day before yesterday and left it over night, used it the next morning (yesterday) for 30-60mins (I didn't really time, I just played around on LHC lol) and today it left my hair full of shine and body! :cheese: I might do that again next time lol
Catnip is amazing stuff. Enjoy and I am so glad that you are happy with it. My waves have stayed even more beautifully defined this week and I am very happy with my hair. I am still learning and trying new things with catnip, in terms of tweaking how I use it.
My cats love catnip and I bought them some of that brand (SmartyKat) yesterday. Nothing. They sniffed a bit and then walked away and never did any of their usual antics. I looked for a date on the bag but could not find one.
Anyway, I've been wanting to try catnip rinses for awhile now and am finally getting around to doing it. My splits and breakage is horrible, even with henna. I am definitely one of those unlucky ones who's hair has always been prone to breakage and splits - even when I was a child and my mom took such good care of it and it was all virgin hair. So I'm off to PetsSmart tonight and will try one of the other brands, and I'll try this SmartyKat from yeterday too, to see if there's any difference.
I want to thank Ktani and Iris and Stagecoach especially for all their research and experiments and posting about using catnip. It's taken me days, but I've finally gotten through all of this thread and blog posts and other threads on the subject!!!
I'll let everyone know how it works for me.
Ooh, sorry to hear about your cats rejecting that brand. Odd. I will take it off my list of possible other brands to try if you do not find it good.
You are most welcome, on my part for the information. Catnip will do better if you are in between hennas and the resin has washed out somewhat. If you condition a lot, I suggest using a shampoo for normal hair or clarifying pre catnip.
I started out with build-up on my hair and catnip use really improved to what it is now, just after the build-up was gone.
I am way behind on the blogs list I keep to read, so I am no doubt not familiar with the entries you refer to and probably some of the other threads too. I do not subscribe to threads, even threads I have started.
Please update as you go.
The cat nip from www. dragonherbarium.com made my beloved cat climb my dresses from the floor to the top of my closet. The little darlin then found the bag and covered my entire room with it and pieces of ripped bag.
THAT WAS THE DAY I FOUND THE FREEZER FOR STORAGE! :rollin:
Even my dog likes the smell of catnip tea, and wants to taste it. :D
Surely not as crazy for it as cats (I don't have a cat), but he liked it more than other herbal teas I have made for hair or skin.
I just separated my hair into 2 sections to put it up. I am going to wash it 2 days earlier than planned for a special night out. It still looks good but I want it to look even better.
And I realized something. My hair is thicker, not because I have suddenly sprouted more hair folicles. But because with catnip, I no longer have any breakage taper. My length is even in thickness down to the ends (I cut off the last of a growth taper from going too long between trims a few weeks ago, about 1.5 inches). 4 months ago I cut off 3 inches, most of which grew back by the time of this trim at the end of June, and then some. The pieces I had from old breakage on my top layers had grown in long enough to be where I cut off the length. All of the nape hair breakage I had before using catnip had grown in long ago. It all adds up to thicker looking hair. My hairline has filled in somwhat as well.
I still get some breakage (very minimal compared to before using catnip), just not anywhere close to enough to affect my hemline and no split ends at all. I have been seeing this thickness effect for quite some time but this last trim shows it off a lot more. I cut my hemline straight across, giving me blunt ends. I used Faye's method again and made sure that the hair falls a certain way with the ends very blunt. This is not the hair I had 4 years ago. It is much, much better.
Ktani, how often do you catnip? Do you only use shampoo and catnip? No oils etc?
HAHAHAHA I have had this happen before! I buy it in tubs instead of baggies now. Your kitty had a really good time :D
That is just FANTASTIC. I am so excited to get to the point where I have no breakage! I hope and pray to get there!
I love the tags on this thread :D
That is my experience with catnip. Others have reported reduction in or no split ends and at least one person reported, no breakage (I believe). I am not recording posts here, like I do in Honey or the peroxide thread.
The difference for me is that pre catnip, when I did an s&d, I said to myself, "Ok, where do I start", with regard to cutting off split ends and white dots.
Since I no longer get split ends, it is just white dots now and I have to look for them.
