Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I have my bleached ends ombre'd! I have them dark pink at the moment. I use just veggie dyes, so it doesn't cause any damage. =)

It was just too damaged from previous dyeing and straightening that no amount of TLC could help it anymore. So now I'm about 2 inches below collarbone and although short hair does suit me I miss my "long" hair so much! All the braids and buns :( But this time it will be without all the crazy layers and it will be healthy!
My ends still have dye on them, a horrible brassy colour. But instead of chopping it off I might get it dyed ombre style so I don't really have to dye much of my virgin mousy brown hair, if at all. So it will go "blonette" to blonde and then I can continue growing it and chop the lighter ends off whenever I want :)
Welcome! Healthy hair is sometimes more important then long hair, something I think we all need to remember some days when we get so focused on just wanting it long at any cost. Happy growing!

That sounds super cool! I have to ask veggie dyes?

I'm curious about those veggie dyes. Will they show up on dark hair? Can I use over henna? Are they permanent or temporary? Where do you find them?

I don't have experience with them, but as far as I know they will hardly stain dark hair. Since there's no peroxide or anything like that in it, it will just lay a layer over your hair, so to speak? So it's not permanent either, but some will last longer than others! If you have dark hair you CAN use them, but they just won't be that bright. I think it will be more like a coloured glow, if you know what I mean? :P
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I wonder how they would hit my silvers... I am an ex box dye junkie and every so often it would be nice to get a fix of something that will really come back out without doing damage.

My hair is a very light brown, so I assume they would show up better. I kind of like the idea of a colored glow though! I've been itching to try something new, but didn't want anything damaging, or permanent in case I didn't like it. Now, if I could just figure out where to buy one I'd try that for sure!
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Veggie dyes are awesome. I like using them to top up my colour every now and then because it feels like doing a conditioning treatment, except with colour :D That is right though, they just give a tint to dark hair. It's easier to just think of them in terms of paint, it only comes out vibrant on lighter bases. That said, sometimes the tint can make the darker hair seem lighter in the way it catches the light, if that makes sense? Especially with reds and purples. On beeunique they stock all the different dyes, they have a gallery section which shows examples of the colour on unbleached hair, which is a good indication of what the result may be. This is tempting me to buy some now!
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
To all who asked:
Veggie dyes are ones without peroxide or any other nasties. Common brands are Directions (which I use), Special Effects, Manic Panic and Stargazer.
They do change the colour of virgin hair, but it'll be a tint rather than a full on colour change, which would be more evident in bright light or sunlight.
They last varying amounts of time from 4-24 washes on me, usually.
On greys I don't know as I don't have any but I reckon it'd be similar to bleached hair.
If you have any other questions, I'm on a hair dye forum which is really friendly and useful! If you want the link, PM me and I'll send you the link.
I hope that helps you! :D

I am too. I loved that I could dye my pixie within an inch of its life and totally regrow my head of hair in 4 months!
