I don't know. Sock buns are pretty popular with the military crowd so I think some of us know the difference.
I actually just splurged on a mesh sock bun form from Sally's the other day. I usually just go with socks, but I figure this one will dry faster and let my hair dry. I can have my hair in a regular bun at work all day and it will not dry. And it's not even that long yet!

When my flatmate took the picture for my avatar she asked me, how I made the bun so perfectly round. She is a bit of a girly girl, still she did not know.
I guess as long, as the suck does not stick out, no-one notices it.
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
hello. :) here's my progress so far, the first picture was taken in june 2010 and the other one was taken about a week ago. i've had at least one "real" haircut during these months. my hair looks kind of matted in the newest picture but it's usually super-shiny and a bit more wavy. :)

The same way, really. Ponytail, flip the hair so it spreads over the imaginary sock :D go over the imaginary sock with another pony holder, adjust with hands so it's round. You can even pull some strands so the bun is bigger. I used to do it before LHC and knowlegde of the sock bun, though I teased it a little bit then.
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
cloudberrypie, You've gotten a lot of growth, congrats! And, I like the layering w/ your waves.
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I only just realized reading this thread how lucky I was to make it from shoulder length to APL in relatively little time (about July/August to December last year)!
Good luck, everyone. :) It's a great feeling when you lean your head down and not all of your hair follows you.
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I hit APL in front, but it's one or two more months till it's APL in the back too. hurra :D
