Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Have stopped bleach and dye after box dying in May'13 to match natural colour as closely as possible, despite the occasional wobble and urge to do something drastic colour wise, I've managed to refrain and the condition is hugely improved, my virgin hair is soft and shiny, it's also proven nice and easy way to monitor growth.
I use coconut oil as a pre wash soak for my ends, as a post wash end sealant, a toast topper. I love the stuff, if I use it on my skin, I notice a marked improvement.
I have also been using a satin pillow case, not entirely certain that it's been any major benefit in my hair journey so far... however did somehow end up waking myself up in the middle of the night violently face planting my bedside table as a result of its incredible slipperiness so Rapunzel aspirations aside, it's already paid for itself in entertainment value alone!

Hey ErinLeigh,
When I was younger I dyed and bleached my hair a great deal and it never grew beyond APL.
However, there are members of LHC who dye and bleach their hair and still attain great lengths. Some recommendations I've read are to apply coconut oil to the length of the hair and only dye/bleach your roots. SMTs and coconut oil, along with other good hair habits can keep your hair healthy despite colouring.
Since joining, I've given up bleach. I do still dye my roots, but I use a not as damaging dye and I'm not lifting the colour to such a light blonde, so my hair is in much better condition. Recently I did a non-ammonia demi-permanent dye from Redken called Redken Shades EQ. You can add a bit of colour and shine and it doesn't really damage the hair at all, I find.
It's such a personal preference. It can be done though.

YAYYYY this is finally me ... 1" past collarbone and I should be at APL by May next year ... I take prenatal vitamins and omega 3 ( not just for my hair but health) ... as well as I switch in biotin occasionally about 3 times a week or so .. I also use Wild Growth Hair oil and wild growth light oil moisturizer daily.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I think my hemline is now almost APL! Although my front face-framing sections grow a lot slower so are a few inches away .

I hate that! I have face-framing sections and a few layers I plan to grow out that are getting on my nerves! I feel your pain!

Warning: Long post full of replies! lol
@JessicaAnn: You can find satin pillowcases online on like Amazon and such. You could also just buy some satin fabric and make your own, which may even be cheaper, but if you don't have a sewing machine it'd take forever to do by hand, lol! I have this satin pillowcase, someone gave it to me: http://www.amazon.com/Hidden-Zipper-...ef=pd_sim_bt_3 It's pretty cheap and it's lovely. You could ask for one for Xmas if you celebrate it~
@ErinLeigh: What caused me to have to chop off all my hair into a pixie was bleach, so for me, never again. I like my natural hair colour on me, anyway. If you wanna dye I'd suggest deposit-only dyes. Deposit only dyes don't lift the hair's cuticle so they don't result in any damage, but most of them are quite temporary. Others can stain and be basically permanent. Depending on how strong your hair is, using permanent dyes to go darker could be completely harmless. When my hair was really short in the 9th grade [I'm in 12th now, this was before the bleach incident in 10th grade] I had dyed it black with permanent dye over virgin hair, and my hair was left unscathed. My virgin hair was able to withstand a lot, including being worn down every single day, lol.
@Dianadarlene Welcome, and congratulations on your new "high score" :p Your hair is setting a new record every day :D
@Angelicblaze I hear you! I hardly remember chin to shoulder, although I'm sure I went as crazy as I'm going right now! I wish I'd had a satin pillowcase that whole time... *sigh*
@Stray_mind You'll be in my thoughts  lol. Good luck! Oh and, I have a round face and a blunt fringe. As long as you don't have a cowlick in front or a crappy hairdresser, I'm sure side-swept bangs would look fine :o
And finally, a warm welcome to soapstone and ositarosita, and congratulations to alimc!!!
That was a lot of typing omg.
Mini update: I went 8 days without washing, and decided that I should prooobably wash my hair today so I did. Lol. I can't believe I can stretch washes so far with hair this short O: My hair only looked slightly dirty today so I wore a knit hat. I read an article that said knit hats were drying and possibly damaging so I figured that oily hair was the best time to wear one!
ok I'm done now I swear
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Hey Askan, I tried ACV and white vinegar rinses for a while, but they didn't seem to smooth my hair much at all. Actually, nothing does unless I heavily oil it, but then it's greasy. So I only oil at night. But like I said, my hair is always frizzy in the morning, but it smooths out on its own by night. Lately I've actually found that a protein spray like "Chi Silk Infusion" or "HEALTHY SEXY HAIR - SOY TRI-WHEAT LEAVE IN CONDITIONER " seem to help smooth it a little. This is just my personal experience though.
