I have lost a few days to this site, reading, reading, reading. I am excited to start CO tonight. I found a few different methods. I think I'll do coconut oil in my hair tonight and braid it down. Then if I'm understanding correctly, warm water, conditioner (left in for 10 minutes or so) rinse, shampoo ONLY the scalp and then a cool rinse?
I'll get the hang of it. I swear.
I'm someone that always wears my hair up because I hate the way it feels and looks down-it's so thin and sparse! I lost a lot of it before being diagnosed with celiac disease. That was 8 years ago and it's slowly getting a little thicker. Volume wise I have less than a quarter of what I did.
I tried no poo, but that did not do my hair any favors! Made it brittle and dry. Now I'm back on SLS free poo and conditioner, but it doesn't leave my hair feeling awesome. Not bad, but not awesome.
Anyway...looking forward to speaking with you knowledgeable peeps!
I added a mix of olive, coconut, avocado, neem, peppermint, and castor oil to my shampoo, so it's mostly oil now. In the shower, I massage my scalp really well with it for a couple minutes (not too long, I get bored easily!) and then let it sit for a couple minutes while I wash my face and such. Sometimes at work when I have some downtime (I work at a movie theater, so every couple hours) I kinda massage my head a little to help myself relax and start imagining my hair growing, which helps my mood so much you have no idea. :)

The biggest turning point was figuring out how to hold my hands. I was holding them as though I was braiding on someone else's head. I used to try to braid behind my head, if that makes any sense. It was always a disaster on my right side. Then I realized I could braid in front of my shoulder and it was MUCH easier. The only hard part is changing direction.
I think it's easier for me because I have very little hair. :p
I think the photo albums are being screwing, but you can't use them anyway until you have over 25 posts. You can post a photo until then, either, so start yappin'!
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I have not been visiting this thread for a long time and feel a little lost haha ^^
I have had thoughts of cutting my hair for some weeks now... Short. A bob or something:o I'm at this annoying stage when mu bleached ends are driving me crazy and my in between length just looks bad, and if I cut it... HEAVEN! But I do need a trim, and not a chop off... It's just so hard to remember sometimes you know??
I have never had long hair in my life (only a little bit past my shoulders) and I want it so much.
Any advices? Any experience?
I THINK I have decided to not do anything drastic untill past APL... but I know myself too well:rolleyes:
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Try to use the two week rule :) Don't cut it on a whim, make yourself wait 2 weeks. Usually you won't want it so bad after that time. And remember: if you cut it off now you'll have to start all the way at the beginning of the 'awkward stage' again if you decide to grow it
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
New here, but I'm going to join this thread! My hair is just touching collarbone length right now. It seems like it's taking forever to grow out, but since I've found this community I've been taking better care of my hair.
I'm kind of hair "stupid", and even when my hair was waist length, I never knew how to do anything with it beyond a ponytail. Not even a braid! I'm trying to teach myself now, but I can't do much with hair this short. I'm trying to figure out how to use a hair stick. Not sure if it's possible at this length, but it won't even stay. *sigh*

I can use a pair of hair sticks for a french twist or a single one for a lazy wrap bun. Try those.
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I've been trying to braid today as well :-) I can do a french braid, and I can french braid sideways on my daughters' hair, but it doesn't work for my own, I tie my hands in a knot when I reach the back of my head. It will take a lot of practice.
I've been so angry with my hair the last few days... The color is going from bad to worse, I told you guys that it was too warm for my skin tone. Hairdresser put a neutral blond on it, but it is too warm, I need ash-colors. Now that it's slowly fading, it looks orange to me. I know I overreact, because it's my hair and other people apparently don't even notice, but still... Now that it's growing out, the greys are coming back as well, and I know that I should accept them gracefully, but I'm not ready for that yet... I still feel too young to have that many silver sparkles in my hair. Of course, these grays are all in the front of my hair, very visible...
So I cursed my hair, was angry at it, but that doesn't help, does it... :-)
Now I'm trying to make it up by giving it some direly needed TLC. I made an SMT, put it on my head and wrapped everything in tinfoil. I'm taking a bath later on this evening, and the warmth and steam will be working it even better...
At least the good part is that I know my hair is growing again...
Those dragonfly hairsticks are really nice!!! And they look pretty sturdy too, I've gotten afraid of using hairsticks after I broke mine...
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Ok seems like the common theme for today is Braiding. Ok If you just joined our thread I do believe that anyone in here can do a basic French braid. I'm a guy and I failed at it miserably the first time I did it. French braiding takes a lot of patience and practice. My tip is anytime you feel like your arms are tired stop let your arms rest, and then proceed. Most importantly take your time, put on some music! It also helps to use a multi mirrors like a three stand wall mirror. Well months have past and today i'm wearing the double French Braid. This took me two hours to braid because I was super anal about trying to get a balance of it having it turn out even. It may not be perfect but i'm happy with it, and the work is well worth it I feel. Ok time for me to go out and enjoy the sun! I'll keep my phone handy to check up on you all. If you have any more questions feel free to ask. I'm here for you all and I hope you all will find braiding therapeutic and relaxing like I do.
I dedicate this Double French Braid to you all! "Double" for double our friendship

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Cafe au Lait, if your thickness is a iii, you won't be able to use hair sticks for awhile except for half-ups. I'm at APL when my hair is damp now, and I couldn't possibly do an updo with all of my hair with hair sticks at this point. So don't feel bad about not being able to get hair sticks to stay!
Nice braids, rowie! The sectioning looks really good. :)

Aww, I suspected that. :( I measured my ponytail at 5" circumference.. and that's while it was heavily oiled and without my shortest layers, so I think it may be thicker. I've been having trouble wrangling it into anything but a peacock twist with a claw.
Bah.
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Wow Rowie, that looks great!!!!! I can't even get my hair sectioned that straight! I'm determined to keep on trying the double braid!
