Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
jaine, I like that new style! The ends are safely tucked away :flower:
alyanna, count me in as another doing the no trims during 2011 challange. Yeah, I started a bit late. But, I'm still keen to see what happens with no trimming for that long. It really seems to work for so many people!
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Oooooh, Luluj, look at your hair! :joy: :cheer: :happydance: YOU've come a very long way since pixie! :)
Jaine, I was just looking at that Goody bun thingie, didn't pick one up cos I'm pretty hopeless with that kind of toy. I also like how nice and flat the updo turned out. :flower: And I got a big kick out of your "lovely assistant" in the video!
And I'm also doing the no-cutting thing, more as benign neglect than a challenge. I'm not one that enjoys going to a salon, so it's really no challenge for me at all.
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Jaine - I'm with CrisDee - love the new updo - and the assistant can't be beat. :)
I'm also on the no trims bandwagon. That's usually how I grow anyway. Hopefully it will be quick this time! I just added in some extra biotin, which I've never taken before (other than what was part of my regular multi) so maybe that will give me a little growth spurt here as well!
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I get my last trim at the end of this month to get rid of damage and then I'm also jumping on the no trimming wagon with Maddy as my inspiration for her amazing growth. I usually only get a haircut twice a year but used to lose a bit because of splits but this year I've given up heat styling so I think it will really make a difference.
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I had the "flicking up and out" problem from Jan-Jun 2010. I kept flatironing the ends and trimming it. Finally I just accepted that I was going to have to live with the bottom of my hair going every which way, and I stopped heat-styling and trimming in Jun 2010 when it was just brushing my shoulders. It was awful at first, but I survived. Now my hair is getting close to APL and looks so much better! Almost one year since I had it trimmed, and no plans to trim ever! I like a rough hemline better than blunt, and I don't really get splits, so it works for me.

That gives me massive hope! :) Especially since I feel like I'll be at this awful length forever.
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Well you guys really got me thinking. See before, whenever I would gain a lot of length it was always a result of benign neglect. So maybe I should just do that. Would also mean avoiding problems with my dear hairstylist who sometimes likes to make executive decisions...
AND, if the ends end-up looking nasty, I could always just change my mind and cut a bit off, right? Nothing to lose as long as I'm diligent about keeping an eye on the splits so they don't travel all up my head. PLUS, it's not like I have any intention of getting rid of all the highlights cuz that would mean cutting my hair above the ears.
So now part II of my question, and this may seem ridiculous, but the other night I was examining my ends, and I realized I do not know the difference between damaged ends, dry ends and frizzy ends. I can spot a couple of splits, where the hair is literally split into two, and that MUST be cut, but how do I do a proper "search and destroy"??? What about ends that have a tiny little white dot at the end. Do those need to go?
I just have no idea how to target the damaged ends and subsequently trim them off. How do you do an S&D to the back of your head? Any links to threads dealing with such issues?
I might be joining this no trims club for sure, especially since I recently got a decent blunt trim (beginning of April).
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Hi! :waving: I'm back after taking a long break from LHC! I'm securely at shoulder (my hair's curling more and I had a trim/cut in Feb.). I have been pinning it up in messy 'do's. I'm excited to read through the last 60 or 70 pages and catch up! Everyone's hair is growing nicely!
I'm back on the "no trimming" bandwagon, and I'm back to being more curl-friendly to my hair, i.e. co-washing and using natural products without 'cones. I did do a bunch of heat-styling while away. :( Well, "a bunch" for me, which isn't much at all! I will post new pictures soon!!
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I'm a bit quiet (sicky), but wanted to say everyone's hair look so good!!

alyanna here is a diagram to help illustrate the difference between a normal straight hair and one that is damaged.

I also take the hairs with a dot on the end because its starting to fray/split. Here is one of my white dots under a microscope. Its not a healthy end.
