Thank you everybody!

My approach will be to call salons that offer devacut - a time consuming, expensive process where by curly hair is cut dry on a per curl basis. If I can ask that kind of salon whether they would do something akin to a "dusting" diva cut, it might do the trick for me.
When I started self-trimming I was very scared, but it's actually pretty easy once you get a bit of practice! The trick is to cut off just a fraction of what you really want, and don't overstress on perfection.
But a longhair-friendly hair salon is a good option too! Hope you find it and have a great experience.
I'd stress during the consultation that you want only -insert amount- trimmed because you are trying to grow your hair out.

That's exactly what I'll do. I still can't believe that despite a quarterly reminder on my phone to "never cut hair above shoulders" that I've had set for YEARS, I let someone cut me to chin in October. It happened so fast :(

Thanks, I'll be more clear next time I dare set foot in a salon.

Thank you! I've gotten the courage from you and the others to just go ahead and try to give myself a trim. I searched YouTube for a video of a method that I thought I could do and I went to town. I probably cut way more strands than I needed to (and missed plenty that were split) but I'm very happy that I didn't seem to take any overall length.
Thanks again, everyone. I'll keep at the S&D and avoid a salon for as long as I can.
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
It always shocks me when I hear about hairdressers cutting more than anyone has asked. If that happened to me I wouldn't pay. Because the service I asked for was not provided. I would also be all over social media, and I would tell them I was going to do it to.
Long story short I would be wild! Luckily it has never happened to me.
I've actually gone to a hairdresser with pictures of what I want... AND pictures of what I don't want. They laughed. But at least it was very clear what I wanted them to do.

I'm not going to weed through all those posts but remember that post where I said this length isn't for me? I found out it's not the length, I just can't wear my hair down in a middle part because it makes my face look way too long. Sidepart or no part it is!

I'm the same, I like casual side part or straight back with wispies. I tried a middle part yesterday because I saw it on someone else and it looked classic and stylish. On me it looked stern old lady-ish.
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I suit middle part, swept back and side parted from the right over to the left, but I've never got into left part over to the right.

Yeah, and right now the middle part is in fashion. Bummer.

For me the best option would be left over right since the front part of my hair literally grows that way but I'm more into straight back nowadays.
Edit: just examined my length and wet I'm about halfway! I only graduated shoulder to chin mid June!

That's a good idea! I found another bun style on Youtube that's been working better for me, but yesterday I tried this style with the stick coming in from the opposite side and it held much better (...for about 20 minutes. I'll keep trying!)

Middle parts look a little weird on me too, but parting it just the slightest bit off center makes a huge difference, that's how I like to wear my part most of the time
