I will try to use A LOT more conditioner and see if it does anything at all, and try to let it sit for much longer than I normally do. Hopefully it does something.
Something that I've tried that's helped a lot is applying the conditioner heavily and then adding a shower cap over my head. I finish my shower duties and make sure my shower water is hot as I can stand. It's like a mini deep treatment and it makes my hair really soft.

Have you tried a cleansing conditioner? I can't CO wash with regular conditioner, even if I rinse rinse rinse I still get some clumping action at my nape that doesn't usually happen until like day 5. But a cleansing conditioner has never been a problem with that, but was still suuuper moisturizing (and I still followed with my regular conditioner twice).

I have considered trying to "heat up" the water a bit for my hair since I believe I have low porosity hair, like, it would help the product to get in. I guess my problem is that I'm pretty "done" with my shower when I've come to the conditioner step, so I just end up standing there, waiting, haha. I guess I could try to dry off and then only lean into the shower to wash it out after 5 min or so.
I guess I could try both :p I don't think I have a shower cap, though.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean with a cleansing conditioner, I used a conditioner with nothing heavy in it for the scalp, and it worked well, I got all of it out and it got the dirt out. I don't think my scalp (or more like: hair follicles) liked that very deep massage (not rough, just a very long and thoroughly massage) that I had to give it with the conditioner since so much hair came out. I was debating with myself for months if those were hairs that were going to fall out anyway of it I was causing more to fall, in the end I just got too paranoid to continue.

A cleansing conditioner is basically the halfway between a regular conditioner and a shampoo. It cleans a bit more than a regular conditioner (and I didn't need to massage as much as with regular conditioner), but it doesn't strip like a shampoo does. Since you were saying you noticed a difference with CO washing, but a shampoo you chose made your scalp itch, I thought perhaps something that's a step between would be something to try.

When I google it it seems to be the same thing as I used when I was CO-washing, only difference is that the conditioner I used wasn't marketed as a cleansing conditioner. I guess I could try it. Pureology seems to have a few and I've always wanted to try that brand (they all seem to be for "colour-treated" hair though) x)
My scalp seems to be such a weird scalp to please, it didn't fight me when I was washing it with a conditioner, but it really hated the mild shampoo. Maybe it was something in the shampoo that it really disliked? It has never disliked anything before, so it's a bit confusing.
Edit: that cleansing conditioner from pureology seems a bit hard to come by in sweden, and some of those sold on amazon seems to have gone old judging by some of the reviews. I'll look around for another I guess.
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
What about a SLS shampoo? as weird as it sounds, after trying lots of SLS-free shampoos for 2 years, I had to conclude that they are harsher to my scalp than diluted SLS shampoo (with no silicones or parabens).
Also, I find the synergy of WCC, RO and LOC to be working very well. You need to use little product, especially in the LOC phase, for it to be really working. I am low porosity too and have to use everything sparingly. And you don't have to spend too much time with the two conditioners on. Shower cap though is useful. It's the layering that does the magic. At the end I come out with hair that stay moisturized for a whole week, and with other methods this would have been simply unthinkable. Maybe with CO-wash, but I am paranoid too about the shedding, so I go back and forth on that one.
The double conditioner in WCC is also the best answer I have found so far to detangling problems. Maybe not your first concern though, lucky 2-typer!
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Hi current Shoulder-to-APLers, I thought it would be fun if we all posted what our end goals are!
Mine is BSL and/or not chopping til I reach 5 years of growth (April 2020). My current length is the longest it's ever been as an adult (I'm going on 31!)...I have no idea if I will even like "long" hair on myself and figure BSL will allow me to gauge that.
What are your long term goals? :cheer:
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
My goal has been raised to waist by the detangling terror I expect after it. Ideally, setting aside any detangling concern, it would be around hips or tailbone, not more than that.
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
My goal is waist or hip. I don't know if I could handle hair past that.
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
My goal is growing my hair until I am bored of it or until I can donate it again... and grow it again... until it turns too gray to donate. Right now at 38 I have no grays (thank goodness I got my dad's genes on hair color instead of my mom's).
