Headtrip, a lot of people confuse very fine hair with thin hair. My hair is very fine, but there is a LOT of it, from the photo it looks like that may be the case with you as well. I think with the volume of hair you have, it would look lovely at BSL! :flower:
Thank you! It's deceptive; I have a fair amount of wave to my hair - my ponytail circumference varies from 2.75" to 3"...depending on how recently I've washed and whether I can wrangle my long bangs into the ponytail! So it's not TERRIBLY thin, but on the thinner side of normal.
Whenever people hear me comment on how I wish my hair was thicker, they always say, "Your hair isn't thin at ALL!"...til they feel it and realize how much of it is just fluff!
My best friend calls my hair "textured air"...pretty good descriptor of my hair, actually.
Thanks! As I said above, my hair is thinner than it appears. It's not THIN thin, but on the thin side of normal.
I think my opinion of my hair is skewed because a bunch of my friends and coworkers either have ridiculously thick or ridiculously curly hair. So comparing myself to them is always a little depressing!
One of the reasons I'm glad I found this website - I see so many people with GORGEOUS hair that's as thin or thinner than mine. Helps balance out all the gorgeous thick hair I'm subjected to IRL.
Alright guys I think it might be time for me to graduate from this thread. I was sure I was stuck at APL and that my hair hadn't grown at all but I did some length shots and I think I have indeed moved past APL.
Length shot from 25 June:

Notice the hair on the left barely reaching my mole.
Length shot from today, 17 August:

Hair is now covering my mole.
I feel weird about doing these naked hair length shots but I figured considering the abundance of moles on my back, it gives me easy mini-milestones to reach.
So goodbye lovely ladies of the shoulder to APL thread! See you soon in the APL to BSL thread!
I say 2.75 to 3 inches is on the healthier side of normal! ;) My best friend has the same thickness of waist length ash blonde hair that is superfine, like tiny threads of spider silk when there's a breeze but it's beautiful. She can do so many cool buns with it using just a stick and it always looks polished and neat.
Just because some people are 5 inches + doesn't mean we're normal! In fact thick hair is a real pain in the *** I can't do any buns until at least waist, the underlayer is constantly tangled as the weight of the hair resting on it knots it. I need a metric ton of shampoo and conditioner, need to rinse for aaages, and can't even get a BBB through it. Plus it's hot.
3 inches will be awesome at BSL because you'll be able to do so many of the styles on the boards. :)
And yay Theodora!!! That's totally past APL! Congratulations :)
Time to aim for a new mole ;)
Congratulations, Theodora - hopefully many of us will follow you soon! :flowers:
Ha, thanks!
I guess I've just always been so used to having "thinner" hair than everyone around me (and when I was younger my hair WAS babyfine...but once I hit 19 or so I started getting coarser hair growing in addition to my normal fine hair...hence the F/M designation).
One of my best friends is Pakistani with ENORMOUS amounts of BSL length thick black hair, so next to her anyone's hair looks wimpy!
I'm also a little self-conscious about my hair since it has thinned a little recently - not a ton, clearly, but enough that I can notice it. Medication related. I'm hoping it gets better, but if it stays where it is now I guess I can deal. :)
Hey All,
I have to join you ladies here as I'm in the beginning of my growth journey. My hair has been flip length-barely touching shoulders for as long as I can remember.
I always had to cut the ends back to just above shoulders because they got so unhealthy looking from all the damage and it's thin. I never thought it was possible to grow past that. But now I think I can! I treat my hair much better since joining LHC.
It'll be a pain to grow out all my long layers that are chin length and my hair grows slow.
Hopefully by Christmas It'll be a little past collar bone length.
I started at about shoulder length. Here I am now. Though I am not close to being done.
Hello! I'm new to this community (have been lurking since my cut) and will be starting my journey here.:D I just recently cut my almost waist length hair to just about shoulder length a month and a half ago because I thought I wanted a change. I've had long hair for most of my life so people were encouraging me to try something new. I liked it for about two days then I seriously regretted it. And I cried over it :( So here I am growing it back out. I'm now at collarbone length! :)
Welcome to all the new-comers!! Shoulder to APL in my opinion is the most awful hair stage..Can't wait like everyone else to be past it :)
Glasswings, I feel your pain. I have done a similar thing recently. I went from waist length and cut off most of my damaged coloured ends, and found that i was now shoulder length. Now it seems like it will take forever to get my long hair back again. But it is helping me to measure and take pictures of my progress, plus being on the LHC and learning how to look after long hair properly means when it grows it will be in much better condition. So am comforted by this. The peeps on thr LHC are SO helpful and knowledgable its great :-)
As awkward as this stage is, I found the chin to shoulder stage much worse, at least on me. Once it got past shoulder, I could at least get it into a ponytail so it was up and OFF me! Since my hair is so fine, I can do a baby cinnabun now, in addition to French and peacock twists, so I'm liking this stage MUCH better than the last one due to the vastly increased options. :) Might be quite different, though, for those with thick hair... :undecided:
Hiya to all the newcomers! And good luck growing!
I think the only word for how I feel about shoulder to APL with thick hair is naff!
I can only do peacock twists, sock buns, victory rolls and half ups, (which tangle my underlayer badly)
No other buns work yet and its so thick that after having it blunt cut it just sits there, all stacked up on itself like a wall of hair!
At least growing out my bob from chin to shoulder I could have it thinned and razored and cut into a style. I feel like if I give in and razor/thin it now thats only a load of future damaged ends Ill have to cut at BSL.
Grr APL, where are you!!!
I looked at the back of my hair today before my wash, and noticed that it was APL! It waves up too much when it's dry to get a good picture (the waves will relax when it gains a bit more length), so I took one post-wash.

:cheese:
It still waves up some when wet, haha, but my longest layer is definitely there! My shortest layer is about collarbone length, but I'm going with the length of the longest layer for my "official" length. :D
I'm finally at shoulder (flip lenght) and I have to agree that this lenght is easier than the slow crawl from chin. Tying it up is a big deciding factor for my opinion of it.
Mind you, I still hate this lenght. I rather pixie short or extra long (the second is the one I've chosen obviously).
Anyway, at least now I can hide it in a ponytail when the hair isn't cooperating.
Well, I was finally able to get DF to snap a pic for me. We've been super busy! Now, when it's wurly, I still have a touch to go, but I still wear it straight mostly (or just bun-straightened). So I think I can claim it!

Thank you :) That is exactly how I feel! It's going to take forever for it to be long again :( But I used to straighten my hair all the time and blowdry, which caused massive split ends and breakage, so now since I found the LHC I can take better care of it and make sure it will be healthy :)
Thank you everyone for the welcoming :D
Wow. I ignored this thread for a day, came back and found two of you had already reached APL. Congratulations! Hopefully I'll see you all in the APL to BSL thread before the end of this year. :)
CrisDee, I know exactly how you feel. Judging by your signature I think you and I are about neck and neck (haha) for length. It's hard to be so close but so far away still.
Congratulations Kaji and Gemini it's fantastic you're both there! :cheese:
Hope to see you both in APL to BSL!
Congrats to everyone who reached APL ... how exciting!!
I want to share a picture of my new favorite updo: a flipped cinnabun with a hairstick. Isn't it fascinating? It looks like like an impossible knot. And right between shoulder and APL is the perfect length for it ... if my hair were shorter then it wouldn't stay up, but if my hair were longer then the ends would stick out.

oh wow thats awesome Jaine, looks great. Im too new with hairsticks to get that but I can try lol
Oooh, Jaine, how did you do that? It looks like you may have started with a braid, cos of the 3 sections - that really came out looking awesome! :cheese:
It's a flipped cinnabun...I should try to make a video I guess. It looks a little bit different every time I make it.
I just measured and was amazed to find I have hit 20inches:cheese:
You bun looks great, jaine! Thank you for another style idea to try! :D
I know this video tutorial if anyone wants to watch.
So I tried it and I loved it!! It's not very neat, and some ends so stick out. But I think it's good enough for daily hair.

ETA: I also did this when playing around. It's a braid pinned on the bottom (second pic) and on top, but kinda looks like a braided bun, right? :D

Im new to the forums and joining this thread!! the longest layers of my hair just past collarbone length and the shortest are chin-length. Can't wait to be at APL!!! Feeling everybody's frustration between shoulder and APL.
