Welcome raebbit! It sounds like you are finding out what works for your hair.
I know that I am learning my own strengths and weaknesses of my hair. I have been here since Spring 2012, and I have learned A LOT, and also have a long way to go I know in learning what is best for my hair as it grows. I do not have dyed hair, but all the same I am learning how to go more natural, not only in styling, but in washing also.
I am still learning on my journey:
For example: I'm not ready to move to finger comb only, but I wonder if I will be there one day.

Same here. I am looking into buying a silk bonnet or some such thing. At the moment I am wearing a tucked in ponytail on top of my head and wrap a silk scarf around my head. This is working quite well. Would be perfect if I didn't loose tha scarf every so often. That is why I was thinking about buying a cap with elastic band or something. What king of silk cap are you using???

Thanks! Yes, learning about what my hair needs and likes is fun. Since I had short hair most of my life I am now
enjoying longer tresses and the possibilities that comes with them. I love doing stuff to my hair, always have. Just that now
it tends to be on the natural side. I have stopped buying overpriced products full of cones as I have stumbled across a no poo site.
ever since I am trying to figure out how to treat my hair in the most natural way and still have it in good shape. And I really am
amazed that my hair has become better after a little time of worse... Apart from clay washes and a lemon rinse I am not using
anything and my hair is feeling better than ever before. And for the first time I have the feeling that I have come to a point where
I can start growing my thin chemically treated hair ...
How do you wash your hair?
As to the finger combing... I guess I will never get there. I have just recently rediscovered the joy of boar bristle brushing...
What are the advantages of finger combing??

I got my bargain basement satin cap from Walmart. It works pretty well, except the elastic is a little loose, but it was only 2$, so I'm not complaining too loudly! I have a Buff that I wear sometimes too, but it's a little too tight. hmmm. A silk scarf? Maybe I'll give that a try!
I like doing things with my hair too! I have it in a couple of little side braids today.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I have a boar bristle brush too, I only seem to use it a few times a week. I believe that finger combing helps with less mechanical damage, more wave/ curl retention, and possibly less shedding resulting in a thicker mane than you might have otherwise. I'm still looking into it, not convinced that it's possible for me to enjoy being finger comb only. I am trying to do it more often.
I am a big fan of my tangle teezer, but I don't use it until day 2 after a wash usually unless I'm doing an updo. I like to enjoy my hair down the day after I wash it.
It's pretty wavy when it's freshly washed. I tend to wash now every 5 or so days with a diluted conditioner left on several minutes then rinsed, maybe a little scrub with a shampoo bar, and a white vinegar rinse. I need to start doing catnip infusion soaks again to condition, strengthen, and prevent splits since I don't plan on trimming anytime soon. My last trim was March 2012.

So far I haven't experimented too much, but regular cinnabuns, duchbraid buns and ropebraid buns hold up great, no need for ponytail for any of those. I'm sooo loving them :) (my hair is 1b/1c ii/iii, fairly slippery, about 1/2" from apl)

DD has some spinpins. Might need to practice with them while she is in school.... heh, heh, heh!

Length shot of sorts. My hair is not very wavy here and obviously it's hard to see where APL is in this picture, but I don't think I'm so far away.. Maybe APL is at the end of the photo, actually.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Thanks KrissyKitty and Sunlightshines!
Lately I've been using Mineral Fusions curl shampoo and conditioner and some Hugo Naturals s&c. I do like to occasionally wash with sulfate shampoo, for a clarifying purpose.
I usually wash about twice a week I think, my hair doesn't get greasy fast.
Since my hair is healthy now after chopping the dyed hair off, I like being able to wash with whatever, borrowing my husband's shampoo or my sister's if I'm staying with her. Or my daughter's Hugo Naturals chamomile shampoo, it's pretty good
In addition to shampoo and conditioner I sometimes use a little oil, currently avocado, but it can be something else too, as a pre-wash, mixed with conditioner, or as a leave in. I use it to moisturize my face too. I'm a fan of simplicity :)
I actually want to learn to use shampoo bars..

You inspired me! THANK YOU. I've been persistently practicing crown braiding, and yesterday managed to get 3/4 around my head before the top fell out and my hands got mixed up! --I watched Lillith Moon on YouTube, I manage my hair in my fingers a little different than she does, but can make it work.-- I think I'll have it if I keep trying.
Torrelin posted in the forums (I think it's Torrelin Paige, who's videos I adore!) that it takes her about 20 tries to learn a new hairstyle, and longer to get it looking neat. That's reassuring, isn't it? She isn't blessed with some magical hairstyling gift, she has to work at it just like the rest of us! :)

That IS reassuring! I have been practicing a french braid every night before I go to bed. A few nights ago, I finally got one that stayed together! It looked absolutely terrible but I had to snap a photo as I was so happy to have finally done it! Even when I had my hair long before, I never braided it so this is completely new to me.
I do love the look of crown braids! I hope you will post a pic once you get the hang of it (which sounds like it will be soon!) I'll have to check out the Lilith Moon tutorial to see how she does it.

Joliebaby, thank you for the information! I'll check out the ingredients on the Hugo Naturals shampoo's and conditioners to see if they are something I can use. I haven't done much checking on soapnuts, but am really interested in trying soapwort. I'll have to see what kind of soapnuts are available in my area too! I like the idea of using all natural ingredients. This weekend I'm going to give catnip rinse a try!

I think even if it takes her 20 or more tries she is stipp pretty magical, and her hair is so drool worthy! I am going to try her nine strand braid one of these days maybe when I hit a solid APL. I also think but have not tried her Fili inspired do would work but I never have time or inclination althouh since I start school next week it may be time to actually care a little about how I look when I leave the house.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Think I'm going to raise my hand and join you. My hair is a bit out of condition due to excessive bleaching last year, but it's juuuuust about tickling my shoulders now.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Oh, actually, would anyone mind pointing me to where I can find out what the various classifications mean? I've had a bit of a look around and am probably missing it somewhere obvious...

Thanks! I actually was more thinking about the thickness/hair type ones, but I think I've found a link that explained it :) No idea which type my hair is, mind you!

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Speaking of... The LHC articles are down for me... it this happening for you ladies as well??

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I am so close to APL. I think I've got about another 1/2 to 1 inch to go before I'm there. I am so excited! :D I can almost do a neat braid, but my layers like to stick out everywhere.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Yep - finally twigged where they are and I can't open any of them!

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I honestly cannot remember the how to of classifying hair if you google lhc hair type that may work better then using our search engine. It never seems to work for me. Good luck! After you follow the washing directions please feel free to post a can you help me hair type thread, lots of us have fun helping with that!

Afraid so.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Thanks - I've found the typing info but can't seem to find washing directions. I have got a pic I took yesterday of my hair after a clarifying shampoo, no conditioner (was checking the condition without it) and air drying with no brushing/combing, which seems to allow my hair to go into a very slight wave (think it would be more so if I didn't have some sort of cuticle damage at the ends)...

A little bit of wave probably puts you in the 1c 2 a or so range, did you post a picture somewhere for us to help out with?

Me too, me too :joy:
Anyone else having problems with updos? I have just learned to to the Lazy Wrap Bun (with pins keeping the ends from sticking out), but do you think it works, when it has to and I'm busy? NO, it DOESN'T! Same with the french twist and the cinnabun. It feels like I'm standing every morning now swearing over my hair. It takes ages to get it to stay, and I really don't have much time as it is

I have issues with hairs sticking out for nearly every bun or braid that I do right now. I'm guessing it's partly because of layers, and partly because of the length.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
It happens to me as well, chunks of hair stick out of buns, especially at the ends (I kinda like it :P Keeps things interesting) maybe a bit of aloe gel would help keeping them in place? if it's just a few strands it should work, for me aloe makes it easier to twist the locks the right wayand I don't get as uneven ends.

My fishtail piglets are still collarbone-length (I thought it would eat up more length), they're getting longer! :D Yay!
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I can't get all of my hair in a single updo yet. The @#$% shaved pixie sides are STILL too stinking short!!! grr!!!!
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I did double braids today too and because of layers they looked really messy of course. But I really think I will keep some layers because I usually wear my hair down a lot and the layers look nice then. My hair looks so short in the new avatar picture, but it's because I'm keeping my chin down.. I didn't cut and it's still 22" or so..

Thank you for the suggestion :) The ends sticking out is only part of the problem, and luckily it's not so bad anymore. My big problem is that the hair simply slips out of everything. But maybe it's more because of the texture (fine and straight) than the length?
