In other news, I was reading another thread and I came across this long hair blog which describes an interesting theory about trimming and taper. I know I have a long way to go before I have to worry about taper at waist length (lol), but I thought it was interesting and it gave me some ideas of how I plan to grow and trim! I know some of us are dreaming of long hair, so maybe this will help inform you too!
Here is the link to the blog:

After reading this, I think I will probably grow all the way to BSL or mid-back and then even the hemline from there, rather than doing any big chops to remove my layers.
I think I should probably add more pictures to the article on my blog, since I have done this many times with success, but my signature shows how I thickened up with this method after hair loss, which results into even more taper than simply growing your hair :)
My theory is that the hair will thicken up fast if one does not shed too much (as in sheds all the thickness that is supposed to grow down) and gets reasonable growth.
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
@emichiee: Thank you so much for your blog -- your method makes so much sense and it is great to get advice from a long-hair like yourself!
@emilylightning: I can totally empathize with you! I am not loving this length, and I haven't had a trim since August since I'm in grow-mode, so I'm starting to see some split ends and damage as well. So:
1) I think since we're in a growth phase, and we're going for length, we have to accept that our hair is going to be a little more damaged and a little thinner than it will be when we're in our maintaining phase. You and I have similar growth goals, so I think we should grow, grow, grow, until we get to waist/tailbone (whichever you want) and then use Emichiee's method to thicken our hair by trimming and maintaining each month!
2) Lately I've been following browneyedsusan's advice to "put it up and pretend it's fabulous!". My routine is to co-wash my hair, then lightly oil it with a few drops of coconut and argan oil with a drop of peppermint oil to stimulate my scalp. Then I put it up in a bun while it's still a bit damp. I find this helps secure it nicely. Sometimes I wear a cute silk head band on top. Or I will put a large silk ribbon around the bun, Lauren Conrad styles:

Also, I love sweeping it into a side bun like this one:

If you can find ways of wearing it up, then it will suffer less damage, and it will help you get through this awkward growth stage :)
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Janeytillie - thanks for the link to the "cheaters bun", I'll be giving that a try! I've also been able to do a disc bun successfully (though it is tiny!)
Liz_park, I've been doing the low side swept bun too. I like using a sock bun for a bigger effect :)
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
@Neecola: Yeah, I have been loving it lately! I've never worn my hair up in the past, so it's fun to discover new looks while growing my hair :)
This stage is tough, and I totally relate to everyone's frustrations. I think it's important to stay positive though. I've found that most things in life that are most worth doing or having take a tremendous amount of time, patience, and discipline. Great hair is no different :)
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Thank you all for your kind words :flowers:
SO I was talking about wanting my hair to get to a more braid-able length...

This was taken last night before I took it out to take progress pictures :p
I'm so happy with my stubby little braid that I think this is going to be my new go-to style. My plan was to wear it in a braid every day once it got long, but it's so braid-able right now and I'm sick of updos!
I measured the top of my braid tassel [circumference] and it came out to 2.5'' :agape:
I can't believe the bottom of my hair is that thick! My PONYTAIL used to be 2.5''!! I know it doesn't sound like much but I've had thin hair all of my life so this is pretty exciting. Not to mention the fact that that hair was bleached! I love how thick my braid looks. I hope I don't get major taper down the line and end up with a 'triangle braid' [as i like to call it] :p
So that's my positive little update. I'm sure I'll be back ranting and raving soon enough, lol. :D
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
emilylightning, when I saw your braid the very first thing I thought was "Wow, what a thick braid!"
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
emilylightning I wonder what ponytail circumference you have now?)) It looks more like iii already...Congrats! Nice braid!
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Wow, great job on the braid, emily!
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Very nice indeed emilylightning! That's a chunky looking braid! :)
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Okay, emilylightening. I have to hate you a little for that gorgeous braid! Mine is about as big as my finger!
