Welcome raebbit! It sounds like you are finding out what works for your hair.
I know that I am learning my own strengths and weaknesses of my hair. I have been here since Spring 2012, and I have learned A LOT, and also have a long way to go I know in learning what is best for my hair as it grows. I do not have dyed hair, but all the same I am learning how to go more natural, not only in styling, but in washing also.
I am still learning on my journey:
For example: I'm not ready to move to finger comb only, but I wonder if I will be there one day.

Same here. I am looking into buying a silk bonnet or some such thing. At the moment I am wearing a tucked in ponytail on top of my head and wrap a silk scarf around my head. This is working quite well. Would be perfect if I didn't loose tha scarf every so often. That is why I was thinking about buying a cap with elastic band or something. What king of silk cap are you using???

Thanks! Yes, learning about what my hair needs and likes is fun. Since I had short hair most of my life I am now
enjoying longer tresses and the possibilities that comes with them. I love doing stuff to my hair, always have. Just that now
it tends to be on the natural side. I have stopped buying overpriced products full of cones as I have stumbled across a no poo site.
ever since I am trying to figure out how to treat my hair in the most natural way and still have it in good shape. And I really am
amazed that my hair has become better after a little time of worse... Apart from clay washes and a lemon rinse I am not using
anything and my hair is feeling better than ever before. And for the first time I have the feeling that I have come to a point where
I can start growing my thin chemically treated hair ...
How do you wash your hair?
As to the finger combing... I guess I will never get there. I have just recently rediscovered the joy of boar bristle brushing...
What are the advantages of finger combing??

I got my bargain basement satin cap from Walmart. It works pretty well, except the elastic is a little loose, but it was only 2$, so I'm not complaining too loudly! I have a Buff that I wear sometimes too, but it's a little too tight. hmmm. A silk scarf? Maybe I'll give that a try!
I like doing things with my hair too! I have it in a couple of little side braids today.
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I have a boar bristle brush too, I only seem to use it a few times a week. I believe that finger combing helps with less mechanical damage, more wave/ curl retention, and possibly less shedding resulting in a thicker mane than you might have otherwise. I'm still looking into it, not convinced that it's possible for me to enjoy being finger comb only. I am trying to do it more often.
I am a big fan of my tangle teezer, but I don't use it until day 2 after a wash usually unless I'm doing an updo. I like to enjoy my hair down the day after I wash it.
It's pretty wavy when it's freshly washed. I tend to wash now every 5 or so days with a diluted conditioner left on several minutes then rinsed, maybe a little scrub with a shampoo bar, and a white vinegar rinse. I need to start doing catnip infusion soaks again to condition, strengthen, and prevent splits since I don't plan on trimming anytime soon. My last trim was March 2012.

So far I haven't experimented too much, but regular cinnabuns, duchbraid buns and ropebraid buns hold up great, no need for ponytail for any of those. I'm sooo loving them :) (my hair is 1b/1c ii/iii, fairly slippery, about 1/2" from apl)

Length shot of sorts. My hair is not very wavy here and obviously it's hard to see where APL is in this picture, but I don't think I'm so far away.. Maybe APL is at the end of the photo, actually.
