This is very foreign to me, and since I generally bun or braid everyday its not necessarily unwelcome...but it is very different.
At this length (unless you have grown long and chopped before!) is when we learn our healthy habits for hair care. Has anyone else here experimented with brushing? Do you prefer to brush or comb at this length?
I know I owned a BBB a few years ago and I also noticed how this changed how my hair looked. It made it look greasier, and I didn't like that at all, more than that I don't actually remember because I threw the brush out. I wish I had kept it so that I could have tried it again, and maybe for a longer period of time, but I think I'm more of a comb-person. I generally don't like messing with my hair at all, I do comb it out well before a shower, but that's the only time I really do it. I've been thinking of maybe combing it while I am in the shower as well, with conditioner. But when my hair is dry and I won't wash it soon, I just find that combing it kills the pattern it got, makes it go from a "natural wavy" look to a uniform poofy look.
I think it should probably get better as my hair gets longer (the poofy part), it feels like it should. With a BBB causing a more greasy look... I feel like that is something only regular use with such a brush could help, to get the scalp used to it, to have it regularly spread the sebum all over the hair. Don't take my word for it! I'm just guessing here :p But I know that that is something a BBB is supposed to do (spread the sebum).

I love my BBB; I use it daily. I find washing it regularly is a must. I also use combs. I have 3 that I love: a wide-toothed one, one with denser teeth, and a fine-toothed rat-tail comb for making parts and sectioning for braids.

Corvana, the style you shared reminds me of JJJ's Folded Braid Bun https://m.youtube.com/watch?list=PLD...&v=Sg3D3eOtcq8
I really like this style and can't wait to be able to do it again :)

Psh my hair is either down, or in a bun. Which is hilariously my "go to". Since the front is still too short to stay in most stuff 100% of the time (those extra inches to reach the back of my head really eats it up lol), I don't have many things I can do! Plus, I'm very lazy. I got a ficcare beak clip from RAOK, and I was playing with it last night. Figured out a way to get my hair to stay in it (since it falls out of a peacock twist)! I take the front and criss-cross it over the back so it makes an X. Then I lift the back and twist it and cover the X with it. I clip that, and boom! It stays!

I originally had quite a noticeable length difference from the front compared to the back, and I think this encouraged more flickyness, and obviously a worse mullet look (I feel you haha). :p Unfortunately, at almost hip length my front sections of hair are still shorter (and more damaged and thin at the ends), but it definitely looks more normal from the front now that my hair is a lot longer.
What type of hemline do you like? I figured a U-shape hemline will get rid of my last "layers" at the front. Since I like a blunt hemline though, I've only ever cut straight across so the shorter sections are abruptly shorter and weird on my otherwise straight hemline. Since not trimming the shorter sections for the whole time I've been growing out my hair (SL), my shorter front sections are noticeably more damaged than my length and beginning to fairytale. Hopefully my hair will be almost one length in a year or so with my microtrimming :p I just thought I'd mention my expierence, in case your hair is prone to damage like me. :) Hopefully you don't run into the same problems as me though, it sounds like you're growing nicely :applause
I like a U, but more like (, soft and gentle! I'm not sure what it is right now, I cut it into a U, but the flipping ;A; I think it's still about the same, though? Just looks like it's much much shorter in the front. Which is annoying  But it's more just where the length hits, and the lack of weight to pull it down off my shoulders so it just sits on them and dries there all curled up.
My hair is very sturdy, which I appreciate. I made a list of all the things I like about my hair, and "resilience" was way up there , so I don't worry about damage too much. That plus my growth rate gives me some very nice peace of mind in that!

ETA Tried it now and I think I need at least 20 cm more hair to succeed with that hairstyle :couch:

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I measured my hair, it's 17.5 Inches when wet (if I got an accurate measurement)! I can't wait until I'm at APL, I'm a little bit longer than shoulder, I wonder how long it will take to get to apl, does anyone know a good time frame I should be looking forward to? Is 6 months too hopeful?

Measure on yourself how many inches you have to go, then divide that by 2 and that will tell you how many months. It's hard to predict for someone else; our bodies are all different.

It took me 1 year to go from shoulder to APL. It depends on how fast your hair grows, mine is about half inch per month.

This exactly! You can sort of guess, http://www.hairfinder.com/info/hair-lengths2.htm this chart gives a breakdown with an average 5'7 woman, and the average growth rate of 1/2" a month. It has CBL (collarbone length, what I'd guess you're at) to BSL, but APL is a little more than halfway to BSL on the chart. So for the purposes of that chart, CBL to APL would be like 7 months?
But, if you're shorter, or your torso is shorter or longer, or you're taller then the chart isn't going to be super accurate. It's a good baseline idea, a good "average" maybe. "The average time it would take to grow from __ to __ is __ months." is all you can really get from that chart, though.

Nowhere near as neat, I think for that I'd need another inch or to french/dutch braid (I don't know how to do that on myself lol). BUT!! It's up, and surprisingly comfortable and only the very short front bits fell out.
That's similar to what I've been doing lately, but with a different method for fastening. Keeps it all out of the way nicely!

I bought a BBB a few months ago, and while I don't use it all the time, I often use the night before washing, or when I'm smoothing everything for an updo. It makes my hair pretty flat, so I prefer my regular paddle brush for everyday brushing, and a wide toothed comb for going through it while wet.

Estrid Thank you for the in-depth response! I didn't always thoroughly detangle before a shower, but I do now. For that, I use a wide toothed wooden comb. I notice that the brush does eat some of the waves. I probably would not brush my hair if I wanted to go out with my hair down...which probably won't be until my bangs reach chin at least...:meditate: I am definitely going to keep brushing my hair before bed, at least till the end of september to see how my scalp continues to change. I like the idea of conditioning my hair with sebum in between washes.

Joyful Mystery how has your scalp reacted with continued use - Do you find that it makes your hair feel greasy? And, if you don't mind, can you tell me how you wash yours? Ack, I totally forgot about washing it...good thing I just got it! Thanks for the tips.

_fred_ thanks for your feedback! Before everyone's replies I was sort of confused as to the greasiness, perhaps I was using it too often, etc...but it seems like with everything else, there are different uses for a BBB.
Thanks everyone!
