Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I noticed few of you recently said you wish to have APL length soon to make buns. I also noticed both of you are ii thickness, which made me wonder why you can't do buns now? Maybe your hair is much thicker than mine, but I've been doing a updos and buns and braids what seems like forever. I am just past shoulder length now. I just recently made a list of styles I do quite regularly in my blog. I can copy and paste it here, too.
***I'd also love to hear how everyone else is styling their hair, I could always use more any inspiration.***
It would be useful to mention your hairlength and thickness in your list, as the hairdos one can do differ a lot according to them. If people quote the ideas, no-one needs to go back to see the hair specs of original poster.
(will come back with the list in a second)

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
OK, here's my list, these are the styles I have been doing lately, at ii thickness and shoulder (+/-) lenght. Some of them are not protective styles etc.
- sockbun
- cinnabun
- wrapped cinnabun-ish (Make cinnabun halfup, divide the lower section of hair in two and wrap both around the bun in opposite directions)
- just cinnabun halfup, without wrapping the lower half (read above)
- messy bun
- several small buns
- all kinds of halfups, usually with a braid of some sort (I'm not a halfup person but do wear one occasionally just for variation)
- ofcourse a ponytail, varying where it's situated (not very often at all)
- if a high ponytail, I might braid it, Blake Lively style
- all kinds of braids and braided styles, let's see...
- I can do french and dutch braids, french fishtail braid, french ropebraid, lace braid - all from memory
- I can do out of memory 3-strand braid, fishtail braid, and ropebraid, and with instructions at least both 4 strand styles and 5 strand braid
- I can also do a fake fishtail braid, which is worth mentioning because it's an only "braid" that holds together without hairtie on me
- I rarely do the basic french or dutch braid straight down the back, I like to do it in different style, like horizontal or zig zaggy or curvy, or crown braid.
- I can do crown braid with different braid types, but I still need to practice it before wearing one in public. I feel my hair is a bit too sparse for the style, but I'm not giving up
- I recently learned to do a starburst braided bun, but that too needs some honing
- tucked under french/dutch braid
- ETA: folded braids (they look like a bun)
- accent braids and partially braided hair
- yesterday I learned to make a waterfall braid
- french twist, both neat and messy, with different methods of fastening
- all kinds of vintage inspired styling methods
- some nameless styles too, in addition to these
- not updos, but I know how to get different textures: waves, curls, and how to blow dry my hair straight properly
- also not updos, but changing the part, and how the front is styled, and accessorinsing helps to break the monotony. I tend to feel pull towards minimalistic accessorising, and bobby pins are my BFF
...
- someone suggested in one blog gibson tuck for shoulder length hair, I need to try it soon too
ETA: confirmed, I can do nice looking gibson tuck too at shoulder length
-

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Okay, so I voluntarily "demoted" myself from the APL to BSL thread because I was aggravated with my layers and had them cut out last week. I'm not sorry. I think my hair looks better without the layers and I feel like I can style it the way I want to without the layers getting in my way.
Here is my hair tonight: http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a43...ps63ece8ce.jpg
And for comparison, here is my hair right after Christmas, when I still had the layers: http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a43...ps505c2ae9.jpg
It's actually not much shorter now than then, because I guess it grew some between the photo taken right after Christmas and the chop last week. I suppose I'll be able to call it APL again before summer.
I don't own a horizontally striped shirt, because I am not skinny and I have large breasts, so horizontal stripes look horrible on me, LOL, but I'm wearing the same pajama top in both photos.
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
AZDesertRose I think your hair look good on both pictures! You are right, it doesn't look shorter in the new one to me :)
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Arctic, thank you! My hair seems to grow reasonably fast, probably about 1/2" per month or so. Those two photos were taken in the same room under the same lighting conditions but I think they were at slightly different angles. I may have been sitting in a different chair. For a while there, I was using one of my dinette chairs at my desk because my back was bothering me in my regular desk chair (the dinette chairs are hard, and my doctor said to put a pillow in a hard chair and sit that way if my back was bothering me). My back has quit being silly, and so I'm in my regular desk chair now, on which the seat is lower but the back is much higher. When I took the photo tonight, I had to turn the desk chair sideways, because otherwise you'd only have been able to see the very top of my head because of the back of the desk chair.
This is not my natural color, BTW. My natural color is dark chestnut brown, starting to go silver. I use henna, and I actually just touched it up a few days ago, so this is reasonably freshly henna'd, freshly washed, lightly oiled with coconut oil, and brushed with a boar bristle brush to distribute the oil.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
AZDesertRose, your hair looks so much longer without the layers! I agree that no layers suit you very well.

What a change! Your hair is looking super now! I love the new style, really luscious! :cheer:
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
AZDesertRose you are lucky to have fast hair growth! Unless you ever want to get and maintain a pixie cut :D
rina06 Layers make hair styles more difficult, I agree. I bet you could learn couple of easy styles though! And by the way, messy braids and hairdos are very trendy right now, so you don't have to worry about any layers poking out either!
When you choose a style you want to learn, I suggest to look through several different tutorials: video tutorials without voice over, video tutorial without voice, pictoral step by step tutorials, even written instructions. It's often that some tutorials are like alien language, but when you find the right one that clicks with the way your brain is wired, it all makes suddenly sense.
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I added folded braid to my previously posted hairdo list, and tested the gibson tuck, and it, too, works.
I will try and take photos of all of those listed hairdos in the near future.
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Arctic, I had a pixie-type cut when I was a teenager (I'm 39 now), and it looked horrible unless professionally styled. My hair has just enough wave to be annoying, LOL, and my facial features do not lend themselves to short hair. Long hair in an updo is fine, but short hair looks ridiculous on me.
Butterflybutton (love that username!), the photo with the layers was from December, right after Christmas, so it probably did grow something around a half to three-quarters of an inch between my taking the December photo and having the layers cut out earlier this month. Thank you for the lovely comment. I like my hair so much better without the layers, and I think I'm kind of "can I call this APL?" right now. (It isn't quite to my underarms if I extend my arms out to my sides.)
Jennah, thank you so much! :)

I can make one type of bun...the kind where you don't pull the tail of the ponytail all the way out when you put your hairtie in and it leaves a loop  (I could probably do a cinnabun too, I want to practice that one). I can also do a french/dutch braid but not very well with this hair length...it's hard for me to hold onto as it gets down the braid and uses up length. Even with a regular dutch braid it happens...my ponytail circumference is about 2 5/8 inches right now so maybe it's that plus the fact that I have a small amount of layers?
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I can't do any decent buns yet, the best I've ever managed was this one:
http://oi57.tinypic.com/2qsuec6.jpg
...and then I am 4.5 cm away from apl.
Think I will have to be a bit realistic here, I measured today and saw that it is 4-4.5 cm left till apl... so April might be a bit too optimistic. I probably need 3 more months, meaning in the middle of May I might have reached apl. Oh well, time will tell
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Estrid, I think your chosen method of keeping the bun up is maybe meant for a longer hair. Choose method according the length you have. Bobby pins and u-shaped hair pins will keep your hair up, as would many ficcare-type clips, probably spin pins too. If you don't mind plastic, mini claw clips work amazingly too. If your hair is very slippery, you might need to ponytail it first before bunning, but knowing this is LHC you probably don't want to :)
You fork is pretty and messy buns are trendy, so your bun doesn't look bad, but it does look a bit unstable.
I do think your hair is thicker than mine, from the photos, at least it's denser, so you might very well need more lenght than I do. But give good old bobby pins a go, you can still decorate the bun with your fork!
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Arctic, actually that is the way that have worked the best for me (the fork). My scalp is quite sensitive to pulling, so bobby pins, claw clips and things like that tend to hurt. I agree that I could probably make the cinnabun look better by using like 10 bobby pins to hide the layers and ends poking out, but I would never be able to walk around with it for long because of the annoying pain it brings. I did put one bobby pin in that bun in the photo, but that was mostly because those ends were hiding the fork, and it was the fork I wanted a photo of :p
Surprisingly enough that bun held pretty well on its own, even though I did a quite poor job putting the jeterfork in (the top prongs didn't grab any hair from the scalp so it is tilting).
I will wait till my hair is longer before I venture outside with buns like that, but it is fun to try them out every now and then.
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Estrid your bun looks so cute! I feel like I'm going to be in this thread forever... I haven't had my hair this short since before puberty. I think the longest bits are an inch or two from APL though! Woop woop!
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Yeah, there's no way I can do any proper buns yet. I'm on the thicker side of ii (3 1/2 inches) *and* I have layers, so it'll be a while until buns are possible. I like to do twin (Dutch/French/fishtail) braids, halfups, and the twist-it-back-and-pin-it updo I posted several pages back. I've never been able to master the Gibson tuck, and a bit passed chin length I could easily do a crown braid, but for some reason it's impossible for me now. Honestly my go to style is just twin English braids pinned in an X shape to the back of my head. It doesn't look great, but it's quick, easy, protective, and gets the job done.

Ahh, ok :) I misunderstood that your photo was in the spirit of "see I can't do buns at this length" :) Sorry!
***
I have this persisting idea in my head that I'd like to take photo of each of the styles in my list of hair styles. I started the project today, and made almost 20 (!) hair styles (when different braids are counted each as a style, etc) and took photos of them, but alas, when I later saw the photos on my computer screen, they were not good enough quality to post here :( I'm bummed as I went through lot of trouble. I can't understan why I did not notice the photos being so bad at the camera's display. Note to self: don't take photos without my eye glasses on. Oh well, I had fun making all the 'dos!
ETA: I took a length photo too today, it's in my blog:

Wow! I'm impressed you managed that bun, it's so cute!
I'm finding at this shorter length that pins pull too much on my hair as well. I'm inspired to get a hair fork now :)
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Thank you, amanda_the_tall and butterflybutton :o My ponytail circumference is about 3.5" so I am pleased that I can do at least that messy one. Hopefully, by the end of this year (when I have *hopefully* reached bsl), I will be able to do pretty buns with a hair fork (or even a hair stick?). Can't wait till I'm there!
And Arctic, how sad that the photos didn't turn out good! Would have been fun to see :) But your hair is looking really nice in that length photo, so shiny :thud:
molljo, you sure know more styles than me (I have to practice on making braids). I don't know how much layers you got, but since I have layers too I think we should be able to make somekind of pretty bun by the end of this year, or well, at least we can think positive, right? ;)

I can only do a tiny cinnabun but it's a little tight sometimes. Hair at a ii thickness is easier to make buns at shorter lengths though so we're lucky for that :p But I can't make anymore buns other than a cinnabun. It's too short and thick for a nautilus and my braids are too short to be bunning anyways.
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Estrid - Thanks! I do have naturally shiny hair but also I'll have to give credits to the flash :) I ended up editing some of those photos that I originally thought were ruined (perfectionism, anyone?) and they turned out to be fine after all!
gthlvrmx - well may you quickly grow to a length where you can do the styles you'd like to do! I hope the same for everyone else too, ofcourse!

Alright, I have been continuing my photo project and have posted some of the hair styles that I can do in my blog. I will be adding more styles and photos in the near future, and I hope they would inspire someone else too! There isn't anything groundbreaking there, but there are many styles which add a nice variety to my repertoire.
I broke the series into 4 parts due to 10 photos limit per blog post.
The Braid Edition
The Bun and Updo Edition
The Half-Up Edition
The Other Styles Edition
The series is still very much in progress...

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
My shortest layers (not my face framing or bangs) are finally about to start touching my shoulders. Its been hard at times not to make it one even length. My longest layer right now is about 3inches from apl and my shortest , like i say,is hovering above my shoulders. I realized a few weeks ago im finally someone with what most people would call medium length hair. No one here would probably say that. Im loving the feeling up my hair tpuching my back. i need to learn to make more.upsos and i nees to put it i
up for protection.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
They all look great to me, Arctic! :) I keep trying to do braids but my layers makes it hard, can't wait till my hair is like...superlong..

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I'm so excited to measure my hair at the end of the week! I'm really hoping it will be at APL. Last month it was brushing it, so there is a good chance I'll get to call it.
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
How exciting, butterflybutton :) I wish I was that close too.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I must be a very confused person, I took a new length shot today (yes, I know, I broke my own promise) and measured what is left to apl. My hair does not look that much longer compared to the last length photo I shared in this thread on Feb 2nd, and in a post just one page back I said I measured 4-4,5 cm left ... but it seems like it's only about 3 cm left now (unstretched). I feel silly, to say the least.

Don't feel silly *hug* so in almost four weeks you grew between 1-1 1/2 cm? That sounds about right, so you should be APL in two to three months then. That's not too far away :)

I feel silly because I measure and get different results :p My hair seems to grow about 1,5 cm every month (judging from how my bangs have grown), so if it is 3 cm left (maybe I measured weirdly again, what do I know) it should take about 2 months more. I think I will try my best to stay away from measuring till it is longer for sure... maybe I should make a promise like: "no measuring or looking at the length till my cats birthday"... Yeah, that sounds good

Thanks for the ideas Arctic. I'm experimenting and it is fun to see how much is already possible with collarbone length. I did double dutch braids today and discovered (re-discovered) I have more hair on one side of my head. If i separate it in the middle one ponytail or braid (on my right side) is always bigger. Anyone else have that?

Yes, I think it's fairly common. My hair is thicker on the left side of my head than it is on the right, not by much and nobody's really going to notice but me, but yes, I do have that.

Thank you so much! May I suggest using bobby pins to help with the layers? If the braid turns out fine otherwise but there are few layers poking out, you can totally save the braid with smartly inserted bobby pins or small hair pins. Styling product also helps. You could also probably manage several smaller braids more easily with layers.
ETA: I forgot to say, that the poking layers can be thread back into the braid with a topsy tail tool.

I'm really pleased if those photos help anyone, I have been taking them with you guys in this thread in my mind! :) I keep adding new photos several times a week, last new batch was added today.
Double braids, those I don't have photos yet, btw. I personally feel I'm too old for them. I guess I could take few photos nevertheless.
It's very normal to have different thickness, density, texture - you name it - in different parts of the scalp. Maybe side parting would make your hair feel more even?

I'm not really bothered by this, just an observation :) Funny how everyone's hair is different (kind of like palms of our hands and our eyes)
I have bangs, so I don't do side parting.

I'm about an inch away APL and I feel like I've been here forever! I actually have been growing relatively steady but with the wavy/curly-ness, it still feel like I'm so far off. Sigh. Oh well, trying to enjoy the journey!

Yes, it's important tp enjoy the journey. Like Shell recently said in my blog, each lenght has it's own good points and hair styles, that might only work for that length. So enjoy every minute! I do remember what is was like to be a new-newish member. I like a lot being an old timer, because I have gotten past the pressing need and want to grow as fast as possible and always clamouring the next milestone and then the next. It's lovely feeling to be pleased with the hair I have now, somehow makes me feel balanced and relaxed. Ok, enough of my old-timer blatherings :) I hope you'll reach APL sonn!
