Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Rowie, I've been trying crown braids as well. My problem arises when I reach the back of my head and I need to keep braiding close to my head, and changing hands... I get completely tied up in a knot :-) So if you have any tips or tricks how to handle that hand-change...
Tried a headband braid, and that looked sort of cool, that might work for me. But it needs something extra, it would be nicer with an updo, I think.
I also cut my youngest daughter's hair, I'm not so sure about the results. It grows like a weed, could be my hairvitamins with the breastfeeding... But since I cut her fringe straight across, she looks like a Playmobil girl :-)
And while working with my hair, I decided to get out the tape measure. I'm at 57cm for the longest layer, and that's beyond APL. The shortest layer is 47cm, and I guess APL would be around 53-54 somewhere on me. I also measured BSL and that is around 70cm, so 13cm to go.
I figure I'll stay here for a while to keep you all company until the majority of you move, or when the shortest layer reaches APL in about 6 cm time :-) (whatever happens first).
Curious what the June TTT will show... Hope spring finally comes through here so the growing speeds up a bit.

Fresh out of the shower, sitting here with wet hair enjoying all the posts. Going to oil my hair in a bit and maybe put in some leave in... or not. Hot weather makes me want to use less product in my hair-- anyone else feel the same or does weather not make much of a difference?
BTW, DaniVerde glad you are feeling better! Welcome back :D

Since there is a bit of braid talk going on I thought I'd show off my first *braid thingie*, it's not very good but I think it's pretty-ish & when I looked back at the pictures I realised I have these strange caramel-y highlights going on....? Weird! The braiding was really loose so I'll have to work on that... :\

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Hi everyone! I've been off the site for a week or two. Every time that happens I start thinking I like my current length and wondering if I should stay at shoulder for a while. Then I come back on LHC and want my long hair back. I think the key I need to remember is that I'll be between shoulder and APL for about a year anyway. I'll have plenty of time for the novelty to wear off.

I agree, though I'm not a fan of product in general. I definitely don't like it when it's hot outside, it seems like it would just be sticky and gross. The exception would be AVG, since I already associate it with soothing sunburn.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
my hair is just past shoulders and 18 inches and APL on me is about 25 inches. So i suppose i will reach APL in about a year as i will me trimming along the way.

sorry for the delay I didn't see your post until this morning. I have thin, fine hair too. I got a mini lilliputian size with 4 prongs. More teeth hold thin or slippery hair better. My prong length is 3 1/2 inches and it's perfect. Another thing to consider is the weight of the wood. Some of the exotic hardwoods are heavy which can pull if you have thin hair. The domestic woods are lighter, as are holly (white color wood)and koa (glowy amber color). The thinner antler forks are supposed to be light too, but I haven't gotten mine yet. Just message Kimi on the site or facebook if you have any questions. She sent me listings of forks she thought were appropriate for my hair and length. She is super nice. Happy shopping.

Thank you!! :)
I just made two normal braids on either side of my head and then pinned the tails with a bobby pin behind eachother along the nape of my neck. I guess it's not really a true crownbraid or anything, I can't figure fancy ones out.
Sorry if that made no sense at all, LOL.

I hate using products in the summer too. Usually I oil my scalp a little in the morning to ward away the itches (I work in a super dry environment) but lately I just haven't been able to bring myself to do it.

I love that look! You'll be there soon enough!
Alright, so that past couple weeks, I've been back at work before starting summer school. I haven't had a proper nights sleep since then, and I'm all stressed and can't function properly. On top of that, the crazy manager seems to have upped her dose of Gramma's Good Old Fashioned Crazy Pills, so work is now about 15 times more stressful than I remember. The past few days, I've been shedding kittens during my nightly scalp massage. I'm hoping it's just because I haven't massaged very well in a while and I'm getting back into it, and I don't think I'm really losing any thickness (yet). I'm going to start oiling a little better in the hopes that my roots decide to hang on, but I'm not sure what else I could do about it.
Any ideas?

Just when I thought I was getting somewhere, a big ol' wave has settled in and made my hair look all flipped and shoulder-lengthy again....At this rate, it's sure gonna take a long time to get long...

This is what happens to me. I just get shoulder length with a bigger flip. That's when I started measuring with wet hair. Eventually all this flip has to move down. Right?

I've noticed that as it gets longer, the flip gets farther down. It's still a flip, but it's a little lower. It'll go away soon, I hope!
Also, a length update! I dreamed up a (probably incredibly unreliable) method of measuring while I was in the shower. I put my hand around my back and touched the tip of my thumb to the very bottom of my hair. That way, when I stood sideways in the mirror and turned my head around to see my length (I do hope that made sense...) the movement of my hair wouldn't matter because I wasn't moving my hand.
According to this, I'm juuuuuuuust barely brushing APL now. We'll see when I can get DF to take a proper length pic!

Start giving your boss some of Grandma's Good Old Fashioned Cyanide Pills :mad
I wish I had a good solution but you seem to be doing right thing: stimulating the scalp, increasing blood flow, reliving tension... all the good stuff!

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Hi! I should be at APL right now if I hadn't cut twice last year. I got rid of all my bleach damage, so while I don't have virgin hair, I do have healthy, bleached henna hair.
I've been at shoulder length for a while now, but just finished reading the whole thread... It helped pass the looong time it takes to get out of this awkward stage.
I have above average growth, almost an inch a month, but I'll remain in this thread for another 3 or 4 months.
I'm happy because I can actually braid my hair now, both english and french without having my layers popping out! There are only a couple of bumps on them, but it is a start.
Waist seems so far away, but I'm hoping to achieve it a lot healthier this time. And using deposit only dye and henna, so it won't get over processed again.

Supposedly she's thisclose from being fired, and the big boss doesn't like her much either. A few of us are considering asking to not be scheduled with her, ever, and if we all do that then she's OUT.
I'm going to make DF give my a back rub tomorrow  to help with some of my stress. I'm also starting Treatment Tuesday tonight (hey, it's 1AM Tuesday morning!) and oiling my scalp up tonight. Hopefully it'll help kick it back into gear and stop the stupid shedding.

I'd be at waist if I hadn't started cutting my hair to jaw length in 9th grade :p

Bunnysaur, I"m sorry for the stress. Sounds like you all banding together may be something to consider. You can't lose any more hair over a nasty mcgrumpants.
I started COing on Sunday. I oiled Sat night and Co'd Sunday. Nothing yesterday (other than combing it out and oiling the ends last night.) CO'd again today and I feel like I have new hair. So smooth, the ends look beautiful without trimming, just fabulous. I'm so excited!

What conditioner are you using? I tried a vo5 shea cashmere that left my length coated. The roots were clean though. So I think there might be too much protein in that scent.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
just a John Frieda colorsafe one that I had on hand. I won't continue with it, but it was in the house, so I kept going with it. It probably has all kinds of junk in it, but my hair LOVES being off shampoo! Even though it was an SLS free shampoo.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Oh Ravenheather, those are beautiful!!!
Got myself a fake Ficcare, but my hair is too thick and heavy to hold a bun with that thing... A half up will probably work, and it was on sale :-)
I also bought a nice big bluegreen flower on a very big comb, I'm very much into flowers these days. My daughters tried to confiscate it, but it's mine, all mine! :-)
I'm oiling my hair as a Tuesday treatment, and I'll wash it out tomorrow morning. Have to get up at 2:30 in the morning, early shift at work, so it will be a very quick wash...

I love the forks, ravenheather! :inlove:
I think I'm going to hang out here until my shoulder length layers reach APL, or until the mass exodus. :p The shoulder length layers are probably why I can't do any useful buns yet at almost APL.. sigh.
Also, is anyone else signed up for the summer swap? :D

It's like a Secret Santa through the mail sort of thing. You're paired up with someone and get to choose a gift or whatever you'd like for them. Everyone posts a list of their likes and dislikes to make things a little easier. Someone else is given your info and gets to send you a gift, so you're not receiving from the same person you're sending to.
The thread for it is on the swap board. :) The winter thread is also floating around, everyone usually posts pictures and action shots of hairtoys. It looks like a lot of fun!

I am!
Oddly enough, I think I'm going to keep my layers. When they start growing out more and making me look weird again, I'm going to get them recut.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I have layers and I hate them! But I will probably have to get them cut because the bleach is still at the ends of my layers (for some reason, I barely have any damage on my longest hair but the damage on my shoulder length layers goes to my chin!?!?!)

Bleach damage can travel up the hair shaft, so if you're trying to get rid of it the best way to go is to cut a little above where the damage ends. That's why I cut mine off right away.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I forget if I've officially posted in this thread yet, but I'm joining the club. I recently decided to go the next 3 months with out straightening my hair (except for maybe a few special occasions), which means I can't consider myself APL. My curls are coming down a little bit over my shoulders, but not by much. So APL curls here I come! :p

I did one of those ages ago on a different hair forum and LOVED it. They're so much fun! Maybe if I stay regularly involved here again I'll jump in on the next one.

WOAH WHAT? I have no split ends though? i check very carefully and haven't found one in over a year - i had some major chops. So even without split ends, the bleach travels up?
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
OK, so I managed to do a better length check (turns out my mom had taken my mirror and was just lying about it ) and I'm about 1" away from APL. :( So not as close as I though, but still pretty close! Hopefully the rooibos + better care/oiling + more sunlight and stuff will give me a growth spurt. I last dyed a little over 2 weeks ago and I have about a half inch of roots already :D

Split or not, if your hair is damaged, it's damaged. I know a girl who bleached a few streaks into her hair a few years ago, and because she never cut ABOVE the damage, she still has some streaks that are almost all the way from root to tip. When I bleached my hair a few weeks ago, I had damaged bits that I could tell were getting bigger, but no splits. I only had a little damage, about 1/4", so I trimmed about 1/2" and everything feels better.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
@ Bunnysaur I didn't know that :( Now I realize why my layers haven't grown at all the past two semesters. Next step is to trim them off :(

Yeah, bleach is definitely bugger. :( I'm sorry you have to trim off so much
