I wouldn’t worry about SD ruining your hair. Those split, broken, or white dotted hairs are going to break off or travel up the hair. So they’re often going to come off anyways. You’re just preventing the damage from travelling further up than it would if you just left them. Also I think it would take a few years of SDing for you to really notice any affect on your hem line :flower:

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Ooooh Jem a video would be REAL cool! I think I understand what you're saying about the twisties. So if there's little hair sticking out further *up* your length, would you snip those too?
See my problem is that I still have remnants of my Heidi Klum shag, which was my last haircut before I started growing out again. I still have shorter pieces around my face that were cut at an angle and with one of those razor thingies so each little hair is a different length and the ends are all frayed (on purpose). So if I twist, there'll be little hairs sticking out every which way.
That reason, the highlights, and the fact that my roots are in so much better shape than my ends and I'm not even "long" yet have kind of made me decide to hold on the "no trimming" strategy. I need at least one more decent trim, probably around beginning of July, to give those frayed ends a chance to grown out and then I can even things out a bit.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I hadn't ever realized how far apart my shoulders and armpits are, lol (not any further than anyone else's btw :) )

I had a similar thought 1.5 years ago, and I regret all those trims. Really. I kept trying to trim away the layers and damage, and I should not have. I should have just moisturized and babied the ends and let it grow, b/c grown out layers and even some damage are less annoying than hair that won't get past shoulder. I lost a year of growth by trimming my Katie Holmes bob. I should have just sucked it up and by now I would have been almost BSL with some layers that would all have been below my shoulders anyway.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I have finally reached shoulder length, so APL is coming up slowly but surely! :D

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I've reached APL in the wet super straight state, but dry (and brushed out) it's still in UBL. I feel so between chairs. (Hope that makes sense)

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Hair growth is an amazing thing. Even if it looks like your hair's not growing even the littlest bit for many months, it is still growing! :) And then you suddenly notice you're almost at your goal.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I'm juuust at shoulder length if I straighten my hair, but at mid chin/shoulder length if I leave it in its natural curly state. I imagine it'll probably take a year-ish to get to APL.
I'm really wishing I'd never cut it back when it was at BSL, haha.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Jemoiselle LOVE the video! I've read about trimming this way before, but have never seen a vid of someone actually doing it, so that was really helpful! Thanks! :D
Okay - so the pic isn't great, it's a little lopsided and I didn't mess with pinning up the fringe underneath - but I managed a sock bun! I honestly can't believe it stayed! I did Loepsie's method (Here if you're unfamiliar with it) - and do have one pin on the top holding down a stray chunk that didn't want to go in, but woo-hoo! :)
..and it's still up an hour later. :cheese:
Had to share :D

Jemoiselle I loved your vid! your son sounds adorable!!! My mom used to do something like this with her hair, but she would burn off the end. It worked, and she had gorgeous TBL hair.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
spitfire511 that is a great video!! I never really took the time to figure out the whole sock un thing (because I've had short hair for so long), but now I think I could maybe try it!!
What's funny is that I have a bunch of socks with the toes cut out because I was using them as arm sleeves to hide my PICC line. Anyways, I was just looking at all of them and wondering what I should do with them (I now have a Hickman-Port and no longer have the PICC). Now I know!!! SOCK BUNS!

Owwwww. Now I'm doubting myself again! I'm really on the fence about this. You know what I'll do? I'll wait until July as planned, then I'm gonna take a picture and get all y'all's opinion about how I should proceed. I trust you! And by the way, I had the Katie Holmes bob too :p In fact, I had two different Katie bobs, just before the Heidi shag. I knew I'd go back to long hair eventually so I really wanted to enjoy chin length while I had it :D

Burned off her ends??? Whaaa? How? With matches?

Yup!! With lit matches or a lighter. I've seen her do it to my cousin's fried bleached out hair, and it worked! You could have knocked me over with a feather!
Basically, you take the lit match close enough to the hair so that the split ends curl up, singed, and blackened, my mom then just runs her fingers lightly up the twisted lock and the burnt hair falls off. I personally am all about the scissors method now! :cheese:

Spitfire, nice sock bun indeed! It's bigger than my TB length bun was and you'll figure out how to whip those bad boy strands into shape really soon. For now they look whispy and almost edwardian! Can I say that? :p

Thank you so much for that! My son is something else, hehe. A regular performer, little show off comedian at 3 that he is! Oh my gosh! Burn her hair, yeah, what you said: knock me over with a feather! :agape: But if it worked, amazing! I learn something new every day apparently! That shall be the subject of many insomniac 2am google searches!

Aww, keep imagining that I'm some video pro! :o Thank you very much! It's really the Mac, check out imovie! It is so stinking easy to make good looking videos, I did that at the breakfast table while we were still nursing our coffee lol. My son was in the background being a dork as much as possible, it's actually amazing that he didn't stick his little head in the view and say "hello" to everyone lol. He is such a ham! About your trimming dilemma, I think you're on the right track taking it slow and really thinking about it. Your hair looks like it is in good condition to me, I bet if you babies it as others have suggested it would be gorgeous and wouldn't give you too much hassle!
I wholeheartedly accept the title of Alyanna's LHC BFF! :cloud9: lol

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Hi all. I posted a few days ago that I had reached APL but was going to get a tiny trim. Good news is after my trim I'm still APL :) :) :)
Updated pictures in my album (sorry I can't post a link I'm not that clever)
I'll be moving into the next group so thanks so much all good growing to all! :)
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
caiti42 your ends look so nice in your new pic! Glad that you didn't need to lose much length for a nice trim. :D
Jem the hugeness of that bun is all in the method. I never liked the sock buns (on me) with the end all wrapped around, so pulling the sock down the pony and 'rolling' it up looks better, and makes one big honking bun! The other bonus is that when it's longer than mine it stays up with no pins!

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
When measuring APL, do we do it from the back or from the front? On my body, from the back APL comes sooner than from the front.
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
lilli, it's all measured from the back :)

Most people around here measure from the back. I'll be at APL sooner in the back too...although I don't measure or take length pictures, so I might not realize I'm there until it's APL in the front.

I think most people here measure from the back but you could do either if it suited you. Many people consider the back measurement as the major milestone and the front measurement as a mini-milestone.

Well, I will be at back APL sooner, maybe in 2 months or so, but front will take about 4 months, I think. Must be the big boobs that make front take longer! :D

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Omg I checked my hair again and it's officially APL when dry!! \o/ oh my, I'm happy now!
I'm off to "apl to bsl" thread, see you there!! :)

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Hello, this is exactly my thread! I've been at SL for about 6 months now, because I've been trimming off bleach and heat-damaged ends. Most of that has gone now, so its no more trims until APL for me and hopefully some more length! I'm also frustratingly growing out layers and my fringe/bangs. My longest layer is at chin-length, but I really want one-length, blunt-cut hair when it's longer. :)

I am in the same boat and so are several others on this thread. My shortest layer is my used-to-be fringe that now juuust touches my upper lip. My hair in the front gradually goes to shoulder. In the back I've got a couple of long layers, but it's pretty close to being even.
It sucks having these layers because they take away from the thickness of your hemline and it's hard to do any fancy updos or braids.
On the plus side, and yes, I believe there is a plus side, you'll have some pretty face-framing action as you grow out the awkward stage that we're now at. I think I'd look weird with a perfectly blunt, shoulder length cut. I'd have that pyramid shape that many wurlies/curlies get

I second that! Although I've come to embrace my layers lately. They look nice when I wear my hair down. Lets see, what the hairdresser says next week.

I'm dealing with bleach and heat damage too. I trimmed away at least 3inches last year. I dont want to be in the SL-APL zone for another year, so this year I’m just letting it grow.

It seems like this period of growing takes forever. Mine is about an inch under the collarbone and I definitely feel like it hasn't grown since I had it cut in February. This where we plug on and are pleasantly surprised when we reach APL. XP
Back when I was almost at BSL, I was really impatient to get there. I would fret over it every day. Then I totally forgot about anything hair, and the next time I checked out my length, I was past BSL. Whoopee! It's like watching your waffles in the toaster, they don't toast unless you go away...and then they burn. XD

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I've started taking a Hair, Skin and Nails vitamin again in an attempt to boost some growth! Although I keep forgetting to take them :( I'm desperate to try anything to help me pass this milestone quicker. The only proof I have of my hair growth is that I can tell my shortest layers and fringe are definately longer.
Isn't funny how you notice growth on shorter hairs rather than on overall length? If you have bangs/fringe it's the easiest way to see growth as you have to get it trimmed so often that every millimetre counts! Especially as it gets into your eyes.

I've been taking a multi vit, drinking rooibos tea now as well:) And also rubbing castor oil mixes on scalp, anything to get it growing:D
I just trimmed my fringe/bangs as well:D
