Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Very neat bun ReadingRenee! Thanks for the instructions :) I usually secure my bun with a hair screw and couple of pins but I dislike using regular pins on my hair. This could be a better alternative for me.
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I'm almost ready for this group!! Technically my hair just touches my shoulders when wet or stretched, but due to my 2b wurles my hair sits at chin/ mid neck so being in this group doesn't seem quite real yet.
I'm so excited though!

Happy growing :)
I'm looking for a hair growing buddy in this thread, who is about the same length as I am. I'm almost APL I think. It would be cool to grow with someone else
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Did a stretch test and I'm like...riiiiight there. I think I'll wait one more month before calling it just to be sure. It's kind of exciting, but since I don't plan on wearing my hair straight ever again it's significantly less exciting haha. But more stretched length = more bun possibilities eventually, and that's what I'm holding out for.
In other news, I'm around SL on unstretched wet hair. I'll never know what it looks like dry. It appears so far that my algorithm is -1 milestone. :p
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Thanks everyone for the brilliant replies to my question about sock buns & less damaging buns. I’d never have thought of using strips cut from tights as hair elastics but what a clever idea. And I love the idea of the scrunchie bun! I’m going to have to experiment a bit more with some of the sock bun ideas as I couldn’t quite work them out but it might be easier when I try them. I might be using a sock that’s too big- can’t temrmver if I mentioned but it’s actually 1 of those shop bought foam donuts with part of a pair of tights wrapped around to make it less damaging. But I think when I fold the hair up along it I’m moving it in all directions to try & make sure the donut is completely covered & that’s when I really feel like I’m pulling my hair around too much & damaging it.

Sure! I hope it works for you! I have a feeling its the kind of bun that only works well with our length of hair because longer lengths would pull it down too much but Im not sure.

Glad you got some ideas!

You either have a neat looking sockbun, or one that is safe for your hair. You rarely have both. Since (to me) a perfect sock bun involves sleeking the hair back and holding it in place, it is very tight on the nape hairs and will definitely cause breakage. My workaround for this was to negate the first hair tie altogether, use a freshly rolled sock which is tight enough to hold the hair in place a bit, and then only opt for the second hair tie. This gives a softer effect, though I need to use bobby pins around my front layers to hold them up.
Option two is to use the first hair tie, and the second hair tie is a satin scrunchie. This is still tight, but you move the tension off the ends of the hair.
I always fold my hair over the sock. It sounds like your sock may be too big? Sometimes I have to push my hair around so that it covers it. The second hairtie covers the end, but not pulling that one too tight is VERY important, you can snap your ends off. I got pretty bad breakage from that over the past summer.
Thanks blackgothicdoll. Just a couple of questions:
1. How do you fold your hair over the sock? Do you use an actual sock or a donut?
2. I only use 1 hair tie to tie my hair in a ponytail. Then I usually fold my hair over & over the donut (this always feels really uncomfortable like I’m damaging my hair) then I pin it in place with a few bobby pins. Do you use the 2nd hair tie to tie over the sock once the bun is in place? Thanks a lot.

1. It really depends on what my hair is like, since my hair is super curly the length I have to work with varies depending on how long it's been since I washed, or how I've been wearing my hair. If I literally just hopped out the shower with wet hair and have to go to work, I'll use one of the small mesh donuts (not a sock, because it will stay wet and smell like mildew!!). If my hair is dry and stretched, I use a sock or a mesh donut, whatever fits the size that I want.
I take my ponytail through the donut, then kind of stick my finger in the middle of the ponytail, as close to the exact middle as I can so that it is even. Then I spread my hand out as to spread out the hairs around the center I create, and begin smoothing the fanned out hair over the bun. I feel around until I don't feel any more sock/mesh. If I keep feeling large gaps, I know I need to find another sock/donut that is smaller. I also need to have a good amount of ends left over after the hair has engulfed the donut to make sure I'm not tying a second band on the very ends of my hair (which could cause breakage). If I'm using a satin scrunchie, I need a small donut so that I have more left over hair, as otherwise the leftover hair will slip out.
2. Do you have an example video of how you fold your hair? Like could you find someone using the same technique on YouTube? I'm wondering what it is that feels damaging. Are you doing a rolling motion, like starting at the ends of your hair, putting the ends around the donut and then rolling down? I use a second hair tie/scrunchie over the sock, and sometimes I use both, a second hair tie and then a scrunchie just to keep my ends covered with something soft if I don't want to wrap them around. A soft, satin or velvet scrunchie would be the safest bet though.
I hope that made sense!

Hey that’s fantastic! It must be a good feeling to be at APL and just waiting to call it :)

It's more agitating because I tend to obsess... "can I call it now? Maybe now? Wait, am I pulling too hard? Is my head back? Well if I squint and turn just like this...." LOL!. Just gotta ignore it for awhile. :o
