Can fine hair really work with hair toys ?
Hello! My hair is fine and I use toys just fine! (or at least, I did when my hair was longer. Still a little short for some styles and hair toys but I'm making do for now) Lightweight, slimmer toys were always better for me - heavy and bulky toys are a)not my aesthetic and b) too heavy for my hair unless I have a super secure style to anchor them in. I prefer wood and acrylic - wood is very light and acrylic is a little grippier and not terribly heavy (even when it's smooth as glass, huh). Extra length is really nice to anchor a bun (any extra wrapping around the base really helps keep my ends from slithering out of there), but if you can get the ends tucked under the main bulk of the bun, you can probably manage to get it to stay with a fork or a bunch of bobby pins, whatever you prefer. Sticks are great for me once I'm into wrapped bun territory (I was wearing stick buns at BSL, I may be able to wear them sooner but I never tried when my hair was that length before). And there's always the option to use a bunch of smaller jaws around the perimeter of your bun to hold it. I wore a bun yesterday that was just a ponytail with sections rolled under and pinned down with bobbies. If you can sort of get a bun to stay with a hair toy, you can always back it up with whatever type of pin your hair prefers (mine spits out amish pins, but accepts bobbies for example). Braids make great bun bases once you've got the length for them, too.

I have fine slippy hair too. Wood holds best, but if your hair is short start with small toys or just sticks. You should be able to do any bun if you do it tight. Metal forks still do not work too well for me. Crockett Mountain Wood works makes small forks in acrylic.

I’m actually really excited about bunning my hair . I’m 28 years old and have never learned to bun my hair or use hair toys not even when I had long hair all those years!
Thank you for all the tips, advice and general info everyone has shared I really appreciate it all :)

I haven't gotten the seashell bun at all, so you've got me there! And pug tails are adorable, so it's clearly a good thing.
Perks of having thin(ner) hair, I think. My ponytail circumference is just 6,5 cm/ 2,5 inches.
And I found the thread with the text instructions too.:o
I don't know why watching the videos is so hard to me. But I never watch TV/films/series when I'm alone, I rather read something. But I enjoy watching that kind of things when I have company. Maybe I should just ask my husband if he might be interested of hair tutorials, but I doubt it.

I've been able to do that too, quite sometime. :p
Not at the shoulder length though.

If you have super silky slippy hair that doesnt like holding styles - not washing it for a day or so first helps & wearing a bit of hair spray / mousse / even just a bit of dry shampoo can help - might also help to add a bit of volume.
Not ideal as i always think unwashed hair / most products generally make it a bit dull, and hair is usually shiniest when its all slippy n clean - could try just sticking the product through everywhere but the crown so thats shiny & silky but the bun part doesnt slip so much.

determination, prayers, and only photographing the successes and not the many tries previously where my hair violently spits out my fork... ;D My hair is middle to lower ii, fine, compacts down a lot, and doesn't have much of a wave to it (to bulk it up), which I think are all probably factors. What's tripping me up is I keep trying to wrap my buns the way I did when my hair was longer and obviously, that method doesn't work for me right now. And sticks are still a no go. I almost got a disc bun to stay the other day but it definitely exploded.
