A few different hair pins here and congrats on the sock bun!!
Yeah the last inch or so is a killer:justy:
Hey! I posted in the super-shorties thread earlier (because I'm growing out from chin length), but I think this may be more where I belong now. I'm baaaarely back at shoulder length, and know from past cutting and growing cycles that this is pretty much the hardest length for getting my waves to behave. I can pull my hair into a spiky ponytail, but the only professional-looking updo I can manage right now requires a couple dozen bobby pins and at least 20 minutes to produce. I've sworn off heat-styling, so hair-down work 'do options are mostly unavailable right now unless i'm having an exceptional hair day. I know this will all be much better in a few months when I have a few more inches of length (assuming I don't trim them to get rid of the last of the dyed highlights), but does anyone have any good shoulder length updos for thick, wavy hair? I'm getting desperately tired of my faux-pompadour / faux-French twist thingamajig. Thanks for any help!
I'm another one waiting that last inch. <.<
If I stretch it out wet the longest part in the middle back is there, but that's sorta cheating LOL
Question about measuring....do you guys put your arms on your hip to open up the armpit to see APL better? Because on me, when I open my arm, I'm at APL I assume because it raises the shoulder a little. When my arms are down and closed, I'm still an inch away (while curly, at least).http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...king/hair2.jpg

That's about where I am, too. Get to work, castor oil!
gahh! I'm with those of you who are almost-almost-almost-but-not-quite at APL. *laugh*
I guess for me too, it means another month.
OH!--As for bun curls, (though the following is not a bun, lol) I I've been having good luck with a damp French rope braid; I'll either put it in at night and undo in the morning, or use it as my Day 1 hair do, and make the down-day Day 2. Actually, now that I think of it, the result is less curl, and more of a tight, deliberate wave, lol , but very...summery and purposeful looking, rather than my pellmel loopy natural waves. Yet still natural looking, oddly enough, because the pattern sizes vary, in a good way. Doesn't eat up a lot of length either, which is a huge plus for me.
For wearing it during the day (errr, in public!) I do have trouble getting it to start in the right place, so that it doesn't look like a weird tail of some sort, but that's a combo of a small dome, layers and bangs, lol. I dunno if that sounds like something you'd like; thought I'd mention it.
Hope everyone's growin' is going well!
@bondeandeebowl, I do the measuring tape thing too. It seems a fairer way to judge it.
And so many of you are so close!! I swear in a month or so I'll be here all on my own! APl to BSL is about to get crowded ;)
About 2 inches to go for me:(
Wahey! Oops I mean sorry to hear that hotrox and pixiestar! ;)
I'm about 2 1/2- 3 inches away so am crossing all available body parts to be there by Christmas! You two will get there ahead of me I think as my hair grows stupidly slowly recently. It's been forever from chin to APL, and shoulder to APL has taken nearly a year on it's own.
Hurry up hair!
Eeeeee! I am so excited! I had a little extra time on my hands this morning, so I decided to try a French braid. AND IT WORKED! I really wasn't sure I had enough length to finish it off, since my hair just brushes my shoulders now, but apparently I do. And the teeny-tiny tail at the end even agreed to tuck underneath without pulling the braid out. :-)
I haven't put my hair in a French braid since I went from waist-length to pixie cut over a decade ago. (Last time my hair was shoulder-length, I was dying every 7 weeks or so and doing some heat styling, so the texture wasn't really right for braiding.) I had forgotten the awesomeness that is the French braid. And only 3 bobby pins to hold the ends in place, in contrast to a couple dozen for my other hairdo! Woot!
Hey All!
I've been out of town for the past few days so haven't been posting. How are you guys all doing? I see lots of us are getting VERY close to reaching APL!
I had an excellent hair day yesterday, which I haven't had in a while. I've been using castor oil for the past few weeks since my derm told me to quit minoxidil. I haven't noticed any new hairs or anything, but my hair is fuller and my roots and scalp are super soft and feel healthy.
I'm about a month or so away from APL, but I'm also going to need a trim soon. If I wait until September, that would be 6 months without a trim. I don't know if I'll have the heart to cut right after reaching APL, but it will sure help with evening out the layers and getting rid of some hair dye.
Or maybe I'll stick with the "no trims in 2011 challenge" and wait until the end of the year. Depends on my hair's condition by the end of the summer, I guess.
I'll be here for a little while yet. I still have a good three inches to reach APL. I'm happy for everyone who is so close to the APL mini-goal. Here's hoping that last little bit of growth goes quickly.
I'm probably another with only an inch (maybe less) to go before APL. It's driving me batty! :justy: It feels so much nicer than it did last time I was at this length though! Maybe I need a little vitamin boost ...
There's so many of you close to APL due to summer! Congratulations!
Thanks Kathie, I'm still coconut oiling but I think i'll bite the bullet and get a trim, mu fringe needs one anyway as it's starting to become a comb-over.
I'm also starting to be in need of a trim but I'm going to try to wait until February to round out a nice two years without. That will also give me at least an inch or two between my ends and APL so I won't lose a whole milestone when I get a trim. I'm still only getting velcro ends, no splits yet, so I'm hoping with a little babying my ends will make it.
Good luck to everyone else! We have one whole month of summer left. We can make it!
Gah, using the towel method I still have like 2 inches to go (at least when my hair is dry). Makes me wonder if BSL by Jan 1 is just insane. Yeah, it probably is...this is August.
*off to castor oil my scalp*
I'm about 1&1/2 inch away from APL. It drives me crazy, too. I figure about 3 more months since my hair grows slow to average (unless my new B6 supplements surprise me and increase my growth speed.. my nails seem to be growing faster now, so there is hope...).
I have a feeling SL-APL is the longest stretch, just judging by my proportions. It's quite a distance to travel going from just above SL, where I started back in March, to APL. Plus, it feels like you're going from short to long, you know? Of course, APL on these boards is not long at all, but for someone starting at chin, APL is definitely long hair.
This is so true. I've measured the different stages and most have about 4-6 inches in-between them. Sl to APL was 8! That's nearly a whole 2 years for me (with 1 big haircut).
And SL was too short to tie up and have it look pretty, now it's creeping towards APL there are loads of new fun styles, no buns yet except sock buns, but lots of twists and toys.
APL in my locale is pretty long also. :)
Hope to be at APL this time next year!
I did the towel test and am still a solid inch away from APL. But then BSL is only like 2 inches past that... weird and annoying. My hair is past APL in front, so I think I must have a lot of shoulder fat or something.
Hmmm, I find it hard to believe that BSL is only two inches below APL on anybody. BSL, if the bra is fitting correctly, is at the bottom of your breasts- where they attach to your waist/lower chest. So you would have to have brests that are two inches in length from your APL line at the front!
I have less than half an inch to APL!! So so close!! So by next month I should be there
Some people wear their bra straps really high at the back. That could be the explanation.
