Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Ugh. I'm so close I can taste this milestone. I am literally an inch, maybe an inch and a half, away. Benign neglect and the lack of a computer helped. I wasn't on LHC obsessing over hair, but now I'm back and I want my milestone! ::sigh:: At least my layers are finally long enough for french and dutch braids to look decent. I'm crossing my fingers for APL by November. It would be nice to hit a milestone and my year anniversary for LHC around the same time.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I think I'm growing back to APL. :) Keeping my layers at the same time. If I can stand my hair by APL with layers, I'll keep it that long and perhaps grow it longer.
Without layers, I've always felt my hair was just a solid mess of skinny strings flat against my head after a certain length. But I do love hair. I may wind up...medium-long. :p My hair is tough that way.
My avatar isn't my current hair; it's an older hair length. My current layered length is in my album. Those aren't split ends or damage; they're blurry bits because my phone camera is awful! 3/4 of the hair you see there is henndigo. About the top 1/4 or so has boxed dye on it.
The hair in my avatar was a reeeeeeeeally good hair day. It was very rare. I had bun waves in that picture. I'd like to grow it similarly but in long layers to see if it has movement...we shall see!

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
GlennaGirl your hair is so close to APL you should be there in no time! I love your colour too, I know you said it's the camera phone that made it look like plum but I think it's gorgeous on you.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
My hair is just past my shoulders, and Ive been trying to take really good care of it. Im going to try the challenge and wear my hair up every day for a few months so that time will seem to pass by faster.
Does anyone know the average time it takes to grow from shoulder to apl?
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Count me in! I've just reached shoulder length and can't wait to get past it. Right now it's 100% humidity outside and I've got the giant puffball/Triangle of Doom thing going on. I'm hoping this will lessen as my hair gets longer.

About a year.
But if you know your growth rate you can calculate for yourself... because everyone is different- different growth rates and different body proportions.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I was inspecting the ends of my top layers and notice I still have damage on them. I'm torn between just leaving it alone to get a bit longer or trimming them since I just find cutting my hair whilst I'm trying to grow it so counter-productive. APL seems ages away and it'll just feel even longer time frame if I trim. Plus since my hair has grown a bit it's starting to thicken up again now and I can control the layers a bit better so I'm not ready to give that up yet.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I'm growing out a graduated bob. So my front pieces are soooo much longer than my 18" at the back. I'm torn about cutting them to even things up. I'm leaving my hair naturally curly and wearing it up more in an attempt to leave it alone

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I'm almost 19 now, maybe I could say I'm 18.9:D

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I so belong in this group! My longest lengths reach my shoulders but my hair is 5" long all over after being bald from chemo so I will be doing the mullet for a while but cutting is not an option, I want my waist length hair back! I have not started measuring the LHC way, from the hairline to the longest hair. I just measure my actual hair so I have eyebrow length in the front and touching shoulder length in the back. So I will have very layered hair! Does not matter, I am healthy and that is the important thing. Ladies, get those mamograms! That is what saved my life. Literally. Okay, off the soapbox and back to reading the posts....

I can sympathise with you here! I was doing the same and growing out a hugely uneven POB from chin, I got to 1 year of no trims by wearing the front up in different ways befor I gave in and chopped it! My front layers had just reached APL but the back was much shorter with far too many layers from starting with a shaved bit that I gave in.
It feels so much better now it's even and I'm happy I cut even if it meant losing length.
Maybe you can tolerate it longer as you are a curly though? Mine is straight but would flick up at UBL and the layers would go everywhere and look awful. I think maybe your natural texture will help you through that horrible flick milestone! :)
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I sympathize on the bob thing. I was also growing out an extremely angled bob and when I had the front evened up with the back I lost a good 4 or 5 inches. However, it looks so much better all one length, so I guess it's worth the wait to have it the way I want.
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I'm still wondering on if I should get my trim or not and last night I dreamed I went for it and the hairdresser gave me a just below chin bob! So I think i'll wait a bit longer :p

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Hey ladies...what's your favorite bun for bun curls at this length?
I feel like I'm at a length where I *should* be able to dry my hair in a bun at work, and then take it down to have nicely-shaped waves or curls after work. I still struggle with it though. Twisted buns ( like peacock twists and cinnabuns and french twists) seem very asymmetrical and wonky when I take them down. I feel like a fully rolled sock bun should work, but I have trouble getting my hair into that bun to begin with...layers just flop out everywhere while I'm rolling it.

I do two fully rolled sock buns, one up high on one side and one really low on the other like this http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/...ctureid=105353
It is easier to do when it's a bit wet and looks tidy enough for work and this way the curls aren't divided in the middle of your head! :)
EDT: just remembered...or I don't take a ponytail and twist it all in the same direction for a peacock twist... I make a ponytail shape then split in two in the middle and twist in opposite directions (inwards) then clip with a claw clip for more even results.

Hang in there. Oil and try to keep those ends tucked away :)

Thanks for the suggestions!! Fully rolled sock buns are hard for me for some reason ... but the second one sounds easy, with twists facing each other. I think I'll try that now actually and see how it turns out. :)

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I'm not sure jaine, maybe a gibsun tuck.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I'm currently at just-past-shoulder so I suppose APL shall be my first milestone. Unfortunately, though, I hate APL on myself- it's quite an awkward length on me. Oh well, I'll still look forward to getting there.
I'd suspect I'll get there in 6 months but I really have no idea about my growth rate any longer. It's been a long time since I've payed attention!

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Jaine, I'm coming into the conversation a little late (work day from #377 yesterday), but the "updo" (lame as it is) that gives me the nicest waves when I take it down at the end of the day is the half-pulled-through ponytail. I have the same problem with the twisted styles. I wear a wet cinnabun pretty much every work day, as the wet hair helps keep me cool - but when I take it down at the end of the day (and no matter how long my day, my hair is still wet!), one side looks great, and the other side looks like :poop:. I'm really looking forward to the end of this $#&* heat, so I can use more updo options! :)

Forgot to mention, when I do the half-pulled-through pony, there's a "sweet spot" on my head where the pony tail dents don't occur - I have to get it in just the right place, kind of just below the crown. My head is very pointed, though (think Jean Luc Picard!), so YMMV...

That is good to know!! I'll try to find the right spot.
I thought of one more question ... do you think it makes a difference where the ends stick out ... above, below, or on the side of the scrunchie?
Do you let it dry 100% before you take it down? With other buns mine tends to frizz if I don't let it dry completely before I touch it.
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
The half-pulled-through pony works for me too, and my sweet spot is leveled with my ear, not too high, "almost" a low bun. A soft hairband works better.
I was thinking about your question, jaine. Maybe two cinnabuns really close together might work too.
Something that works really good are twin rope braids, but that's not a work updo. :D

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
i was in Boston a few weeks ago for work, and randomly went in to this CVS there, they had these ponytail holders that do not leave dents in your hair. At all. It's so amazing. I already tossed the packaging, and can't find anything like it in Brooklyn.
For what it's worth, they're out there! (In the Cambridge CVS by MIT)

On my head, it works best if the ends stick out below the scrunchie. And it also works best if I start with damp or dry hair, again, if it's soaking wet to start, it simply never dries for me.

Wow, that's totally worth a trip to CVS to investigate! Do you remember if the packaging said something about not leaving dents? I already have so many "fail" toys, I'd hate to buy another...

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Hi there,
I just cut my hair from below waist to mid neck length. Now I consider my self growing again. I think it will take me a year to reach APL.

Hello Misso, welcome to our club :) I've taken a year so far from mid neck length to 'nearly' APL! I'm very tall, so a year is probably about right. Pull up a chair and get comfortble, you'll be with us for a while :D

Hi! new here. I'm almost APL (If I stretch it in the front I"m just about there). I just learned about sock buns on this thread. How did I go my whole life not knowing this?!? You all just made my day!:D

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
jaine, I've had great success with curling my hair with what I call bohemian braids. It's a super-easy twisted braid down each side into two braids. I haven't had any luck with bun waves yet.

Yip, but make sure they're smooth/hair friendly so you don’t cause any damage as you put them in.

Thanks! :) That one in particular I made with U hair pins, but even bobby pins would work.

Ohh.. u hair pins, haven't even heard of those! (You can tell I'm a long hair newbie still LOL.)
I'll have to play around!
Right now I'm happy of having 'accomplished' my first sock bun! :D http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/...ctureid=109129

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I admit I didn't have much luck with the half-pulled-through ponytail as a drying method. It definitely resulted in the straightest hair I've seen so far, but there were 2 big horizontal kinks across my entire head - one at the top of the loop and one at the bottom - I think I need a little more randomness to make it look natural. Probably my own fault for being so exact about it when I was putting it up!
I'm also tempted to just dry my hair down when I want to wear it down, and dry it up when I want to wear it up ... hmmm, drying it up in order to wear it down might not be a realistic goal.
I think I'll try the 2 twists facing each other next and see how that works. If that doesn't work I might have to learn how to do the sock bun!
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I'm just past shoulder my self and have been working on mine since may and I do hair, skin, and nails pills. I haven't done the no cones yet. I'm afraid to try it my hair may fall apart. I did take a friends advice and try M*ne N Tail shampoo and conditioner. I do hope you reach your goal date. I'm hoping to reach mine in a year.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Hi everyone! I just joined and am working towards APL. Right now the front hair hits my collar bone. It is a bit shorter in back and want to grow it out a little more then cut it so all the layers are gone. I hope it wont take too long. I have dark blonde hair that I have put highlights into. I'm planning on trying out honey to lighten up the roots when they become more obvious... has anyone tried that?
