No alcohol ...it's one of those obsessively natural brands (max green alchemy)...but it's a really old bottle of it. I think it might have gone bad because it never used to make my hair feel tangly until the past few month or two.

My longest layer is touching the APL line when stretched but I barely consider myself shoulder length. This *&@!& stupid zillion-layered haircut is so awful, I have a mind to chop it off to match, but it's so hard when the shortest layer is not even collarbone.
It's been 4.5 months since I got it cut, I think I can wait another month or two before cutting. Maybe I'll land at a comfy shoulder length.
The hardest part of this whole ordeal is knowing I had scraggly, thin BSL hair and could have had thick APL hair (which I want!) in one second with a cut. But that &!$%*# decided to cut half my hair to my ears.
i think that im closer to APL than i thought. maybe by january ill be there.
but anyway...
how do you all find inspiration to keep going and stay positive?! :( alot of times i cant.
i cant style my hair in any way shape or form that even looks good and im trying to avoid all styling tools at all cost which is hard.
its not like id want to cut my hair shorter but i just feel like ill never ever get my hair past BSL
I notice you have a fringe/bangs. Maybe still style your fringe?
I still heat style my fringe (doesn't count IMO as I won't be growing them long anytime soon) and if the rest of my hair isn't behaving (which it usually isn't because it's curly and I don't use heat at all) I put it in a bun. My hair isn't long enough to do all the fancy buns on here, but I can do a few. If my bangs are perfect it helps me feel "polished" and it doesn't matter as much that I can't use heat/styling tools on the rest of my hair.
I have also learned to embrace my hair's natural texture- Something I couldn't do the last time I attempted long hair hence why I failed- I only heat styled once a week/fortnight/month but it was enough to do a considerable amount of damage.
I do get discouraged by how far I have to go sometimes and it doesn't help that BSL is the longest my hair has ever been, I wonder if I can even make it to waist?? So you're definitely not alone ;) Good luck!
ahaha i totally see it the same way, the front doesnt count! :D
but i try not to do anything to the right side of it because i have such a lack of hair there (part shaved head) but luckily its pretty straight as is
i can kinda do this crappy little twisty bun thing that sticks out all over and i have to use 3 bobby pins just to get it down :P
and thankyou, good luck to you too!
Ugh, that's the one downside of those uber-natural products, they do have a shorter shelf life. Still, glad you figured that out before you cut! :)
ITC, I know what you mean! I'm a little ahead of you, I have a pretty good patch in back that's APL, and my shorter layers are touching collarbone - but still, the zillion layers drive me NUTS! But then someone (possibly Jaine!) reminded me how much easier updos are with layered hair - oh the quandary!
The thing that keeps me going is updos. I can only do a couple, a cinnabun, French twist and pencil bun - but the whole "put it up and forget it" thing is working very well for me!
Actually, I just now tried the pencil bun for the millionth time, and found out I CAN DO IT NOW!! :cheese: :disco: It feels like it's just barely long enough, and it has to be at exactly a certain place on my head, but it feels as though it would hold all day! And I really like the way it looks - with a stick! I was never a big fan of hair sticks, but I do like the way this looks with a stick - oh my, I certainly don't need to be enabled to buy any more hair toys...:shudder:
Odd how some things are totally different for different people - I have layers in my hair and it's far harder for me to do updos than if it was all one length. A lot of my layers are too short right now to stay in.Quote:

Mind you, my shortest layers are chin length whereas yours are longer so maybe once mine get down a bit it'll be easier.
That's it exactly. Mine wouldn't stay in either at that length, they had to be midway between chin and collarbone (I think a little closer to collarbone) before I could get an updo to hold. Before that, I'd try an updo and some of the chin-length layers would fall out, which would undermine the stability of the entire 'do, then the whole thing would fall out! The only 'do I could do at that length was a wet cinnabun gooped with gel, held by a scrunchee - for that terribly attractive slicked back librarian look...
How about some Caruso steam rollers? Mine cost about $45 and I really love them...I can get my hair to look really nice in about 45 minutes (30 minutes of that is just drying time so I can do other stuff like getting dressed and putting on makeup). They work best in 100% dry hair that doesn't have any silicone in it. They are non-damaging too...much better than a curling iron.
Ugh, it's so annoying!
I was never one for updos except a basic bun and I can do that now. What I can't do is wear my hair down. It looks so thin, like I have no hair!
My fingers are crossed that it's the layers and not just my hair because when I last had shoulder length hair (2008.) before I started growing long in 2009, it looked a lot thicker. Even at the time I decided to get serious about growing (20.5"), it looked way thinner than when I likely was more like 18" but all one length.
I had planned on holding off until about January to get a cut but I think I'm missing out on a cute, shoulder length style that I haven't had in a few years.
If I post some pics for comparison, maybe you guys will help me decide :D

Nice growth, slo2gro!!
I'm debating whether I should even out my layers now or wait til APL. If I do it now, I won't have to deal with it later, but it'll cut some length. Opinions? Comments? Please!:)
Ugh, RedBlue, I've been fighting the same battle with myself! I hate how my zillion layers poke out of all my updos, and my hair looks much better with the ends blunt (my hair is too fine and straight for triangle head) - but I just hate to lose any length! I last had mine trimmed on January 15th, so I think I'll just put it up and forget it until this coming January 15th, and make a microtrim an annual ritual for the next few years til I reach hip. :)
I think I've made it to APL.
Heres my hair in Aug and now today.

Today

I struggled with going to get a professional trim to even things all out. I needed it desperately. My own trims left my ends really jagged and was not nice. To many it looked ok and well to me it bothered me a lot and I am so happy I got my trim. It didnt take off much length at all and my ends are so much happier for it. I still have my layers but they too have been trimmed and the splits are gone from them as well. My hair all around is much happier. I am glad I did it.
S2G, I've also been wavering as to whether to self-trim or to have it done professionally - now that I see how nicely yours turned out, I think I'll definitely have it done professionally. I cut everyone's hair in my family, so I do know how, but I can't get behind my own head to make sure it's even - and that jaggedness you described is exactly what I'm concerned about. Thanks for sharing! :flower:
Speak of the devil ... here's a homemade haircut that I did on myself very carefully in 2008. (And I had been practicing cutting my own hair for about 4 years). I think it looks like hell. Hopefully you're better than I am at cutting hair if you're going to be doing it yourself!

I'll just wait til APL, possibly longer, to even my hair out!
Happy growing, everyone!:)

Looks like I have a bit of a U hemline and the bottom of my U is juuust touching APL. It's hard to see.. black hair over a black top, and then I tried to wrap a (of course black) pillowcase under my arms to help show APL since my top had loose sleeves.. well, it didn't help much. But based on what I can see in my poor quality photo, I'd hazard a guess that solid APL by Christmas will be just about right.
If my hair does grow the average .5 inches, I have had two inches of growth since I chopped it in June!!! Yay for growth!!!:):cheese:
I finally hit APL!!!! thanks for all the support, LHC!!! ^_^ moving on to APL to BSL!!
Just checking in to say :justy:! I hate the growth phase I'm in now. The longest bits of my hair are now past collarbone, but my layers are driving me CRAAAAZY. Unfortunately, I don't know the hairdressers in the city where I am right now, so I've been putting my hair up when I need to look professional, and putting off getting a trim until I have a bit more length. I did self-trim the layers around my face a little just to clean up the ends a bit, but the whole thing needs a small trim to reshape the layers. Unfortunately, no layers is not an option for me (due to the dreaded triangle-head) unless my hair is waist length or so.
Occasionally my hair looks OK down when it has just finished air drying or when it has braid waves in it, but mostly it just looks terrible unless I put it up. I know from experience that things will be much better in a couple of months, but still... ick.
OK, just needed to vent! Thanks for listening!
Was able to make my first solid bun yesterday! (since the recent cut)
I gently coiled, wrapped around one finger, tucked the ends behind, and ended up with an almost-seashell bun. :D
I have been so happy to be able to put up my hair that I haven't been too annoyed at it since then. :) But, these eleventy-billion layers I am growing out are still getting to me. I had thought, with putting my hair up, I could wait to trim them out when I hit APL.... I am beginning to think of starting sooner.... like next month. Maybe if I just slowing trim just a tiny bit each month, I will still gain length, and get rid of some of the crazy out-grown layers. I don't dislike my hair, just getting annoyed at the layers. Then again, by next month I can see thinking monthly trims being too much work when I can just pull the hair back. :P Cutting all the layers out would mean no putting my hair up, right now I'd rather be able to put the hair up and deal with layers.
hmmm... looks like I just need to vent in a place where I won't be looked at odd. Thanks. :)
kielrain, thats what I am doing, a little trim each month so that eventually everything will be even but you can still appreciate the length that slowly builds. It is an exercise in patience.
Last Saturday I cut back to the no-man's land that lies between SL and APL to start getting rid of my layers. I have about 3 inches to get back to APL, so I'll be here for a while unless my hair miraculously speeds its growth!

Ignore the stringiness, oil is a pain in the butt to get out of my hair.
Edit: wow, I realized the oversized shirt makes me look like I have armpits pretty much at my elbows....now THAT would be a long distance to grow!!
Up to .... your ends look nice and blunt doesnt look stringy at all. Its growing nicely.
Uptosomeone - I think your hair looks much better after the trim :) I did the same thing a few weeks ago to get rid of my layers ::air high five!!:: ::cry::
Kudos to you, uptosomeone. It is a hard thing to do to cut your hair when you are trying to grow it. It will pay off and your hemline looks great. :) Welcome to the thread.
Thanks, you guys! It's always encouraging to hear that your hair looks better post cut than pre cut. :)
I'm happy with it for the most part, it's just the annoying thin edges that bother me. I'm a bit annoyed that I'm going to have to maintain them to get them blunter, and I don't even know how much they'll grow since they're mostly on the sides of my head and by far have the most damage because they hang down out of my updos. Do any of you have this problem?
^^ yep. I sure do. Have had shorter side of head hairs that stay short because
a) If they are in my updo's being on the sides they cop the brunt of the mechanical stress and break
b) If they are too short for my updo's they hang out and flow free and break
It's a lose/lose. But you're definitely not alone. Im hoping by being more gentle on my hair and only using cloth hairties and pinning back the short pieces will help me over this hurdle.
I'm getting my hair trimmed on Saturday ... I feel a very strong temptation to trim it myself in the bathroom, and that's my cue, it's hopeless to resist. :D
"No trims in 2011" must succumb to the vastly more important goal of "no disastrous bathroom haircuts in 2011"
Frustrated!
My hair is about 2 inches from APL, but when it dries curly, it is just over my shoulders. It's giving me hair length multiple personality disorder. It's short! It's long!
GUH!
