Hi!!! Welcome to LHC and the thread :D I used to think I was a slow grower too, but then I started giving myself daily scalp massages and I'm allllllllmost APL after a shaggy pixie in August :agape: Using a mixture of oils in my massages probably helped too :)

Hi and welcome :D
You'll figure things out soon enough and then probably become very lazy like i am now :p. I'm sure you've checked this out, but this thread has some links to useful newbie-information you might want to check out if you're looking for specific information about CO or anything else :)
I think i will send an e-mail to nightblooming, just to ask about the color-changing sticks :) if she says no, it's all the better for my budget, and if she says yes, then awayl with my budget :D

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Hi everybody! I took a picture of my hair yesterday and was pleasantly surprised by the fact that I'm only less than an inch shy of APL! So excited - as it was a really looooooooooooong growing period for me: more than a year (( I guess next month I'll be officially at APL.
Happy growing to everyone!

are you kidding?! holy cow! I'll need more info on that. I love using oils on my skin (castor and coconut are my favorites!) and I would love to speed things up! How long did you massage for?
I have lost a few days to this site, reading, reading, reading. I am excited to start CO tonight. I found a few different methods. I think I'll do coconut oil in my hair tonight and braid it down. Then if I'm understanding correctly, warm water, conditioner (left in for 10 minutes or so) rinse, shampoo ONLY the scalp and then a cool rinse?
I'll get the hang of it. I swear.
I'm someone that always wears my hair up because I hate the way it feels and looks down-it's so thin and sparse! I lost a lot of it before being diagnosed with celiac disease. That was 8 years ago and it's slowly getting a little thicker. Volume wise I have less than a quarter of what I did.
I tried no poo, but that did not do my hair any favors! Made it brittle and dry. Now I'm back on SLS free poo and conditioner, but it doesn't leave my hair feeling awesome. Not bad, but not awesome.
Anyway...looking forward to speaking with you knowledgeable peeps!

I think you should. Like I said before it doesn't hurt to try. Please keep us updated, I think I might order one but in a custom design if she's the type willing to take custom orders.:D

yummy!:pizza: Any shops you'd recommend over there that sell good hair sticks. I used to go to Octopus for cute accessories, but I don't remember if they sell sticks or hair stuff.

Yes keep on wearing your hair up! I've noticed a big difference in how my ends feel. Especially if I were to coconut oil my hair and then bun it, when i unravel my bun before going to bed it feels nice and moist, and my ends feel silky smooth for a change. Of course I've been wearing my hair up for almost a month now. You should also check out the "Wear your hair up for a month" thread. It's nice to get ideas of up-dos over there for days when you are running out of ideas or if you need ideas.
No poo for me dried out my hair so I can relate with you on that note! Have you tried SMT yet?

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
no, I haven't even heard of that one yet. Nice! I will check out that thread, thank you. I sock bun almost every day-but I do a cheat with one of the donut things. I have a crown braid today, but generally it's just a sock bun!

Ooooooh I'm wearing a double french braid. I'd love to see your crown braid! Any chance you can show us your pic? I'll post mine if you do. LOL how long did it take you? I've always wanted to try that braid but feel intimidated by it.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I'll try to figure out posting a photo. I LOVE playing with hair. I do crown braids on my daughter all the time which is how I figured it out. It only took about 8 minutes.
The biggest turning point was figuring out how to hold my hands. I was holding them as though I was braiding on someone else's head. I used to try to braid behind my head, if that makes any sense. It was always a disaster on my right side. Then I realized I could braid in front of my shoulder and it was MUCH easier. The only hard part is changing direction.
I think it's easier for me because I have very little hair. :p

Thanks for the tips! I know i'll probably have a hard time at first, but I know it's all about practice. I also like to play with hair because I grew up with two sisters. Now that I'm growing out my hair I can finally play with my own hair anytime. Such a luxury we have as a longhair.:) I'll probably attempt the crown braid using the basic French as opposed to the Dutch or herringbone braid. Oooh thanks for your tip! I think i'll attempt that tomorrow. I'm so excited! Thanks, you made my day.:D

I added a mix of olive, coconut, avocado, neem, peppermint, and castor oil to my shampoo, so it's mostly oil now. In the shower, I massage my scalp really well with it for a couple minutes (not too long, I get bored easily!) and then let it sit for a couple minutes while I wash my face and such. Sometimes at work when I have some downtime (I work at a movie theater, so every couple hours) I kinda massage my head a little to help myself relax and start imagining my hair growing, which helps my mood so much you have no idea. :)

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I have not been visiting this thread for a long time and feel a little lost haha ^^
I have had thoughts of cutting my hair for some weeks now... Short. A bob or something:o I'm at this annoying stage when mu bleached ends are driving me crazy and my in between length just looks bad, and if I cut it... HEAVEN! But I do need a trim, and not a chop off... It's just so hard to remember sometimes you know??
I have never had long hair in my life (only a little bit past my shoulders) and I want it so much.
Any advices? Any experience?
I THINK I have decided to not do anything drastic untill past APL... but I know myself too well:rolleyes:
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Try to use the two week rule :) Don't cut it on a whim, make yourself wait 2 weeks. Usually you won't want it so bad after that time. And remember: if you cut it off now you'll have to start all the way at the beginning of the 'awkward stage' again if you decide to grow it

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
New here, but I'm going to join this thread! My hair is just touching collarbone length right now. It seems like it's taking forever to grow out, but since I've found this community I've been taking better care of my hair.
I'm kind of hair "stupid", and even when my hair was waist length, I never knew how to do anything with it beyond a ponytail. Not even a braid! I'm trying to teach myself now, but I can't do much with hair this short. I'm trying to figure out how to use a hair stick. Not sure if it's possible at this length, but it won't even stay. *sigh*

I can use a pair of hair sticks for a french twist or a single one for a lazy wrap bun. Try those.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I've been trying to braid today as well :-) I can do a french braid, and I can french braid sideways on my daughters' hair, but it doesn't work for my own, I tie my hands in a knot when I reach the back of my head. It will take a lot of practice.
I've been so angry with my hair the last few days... The color is going from bad to worse, I told you guys that it was too warm for my skin tone. Hairdresser put a neutral blond on it, but it is too warm, I need ash-colors. Now that it's slowly fading, it looks orange to me. I know I overreact, because it's my hair and other people apparently don't even notice, but still... Now that it's growing out, the greys are coming back as well, and I know that I should accept them gracefully, but I'm not ready for that yet... I still feel too young to have that many silver sparkles in my hair. Of course, these grays are all in the front of my hair, very visible...
So I cursed my hair, was angry at it, but that doesn't help, does it... :-)
Now I'm trying to make it up by giving it some direly needed TLC. I made an SMT, put it on my head and wrapped everything in tinfoil. I'm taking a bath later on this evening, and the warmth and steam will be working it even better...
At least the good part is that I know my hair is growing again...
Those dragonfly hairsticks are really nice!!! And they look pretty sturdy too, I've gotten afraid of using hairsticks after I broke mine...

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Ok seems like the common theme for today is Braiding. Ok If you just joined our thread I do believe that anyone in here can do a basic French braid. I'm a guy and I failed at it miserably the first time I did it. French braiding takes a lot of patience and practice. My tip is anytime you feel like your arms are tired stop let your arms rest, and then proceed. Most importantly take your time, put on some music! It also helps to use a multi mirrors like a three stand wall mirror. Well months have past and today i'm wearing the double French Braid. This took me two hours to braid because I was super anal about trying to get a balance of it having it turn out even. It may not be perfect but i'm happy with it, and the work is well worth it I feel. Ok time for me to go out and enjoy the sun! I'll keep my phone handy to check up on you all. If you have any more questions feel free to ask. I'm here for you all and I hope you all will find braiding therapeutic and relaxing like I do.
I dedicate this Double French Braid to you all! "Double" for double our friendship

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Cafe au Lait, if your thickness is a iii, you won't be able to use hair sticks for awhile except for half-ups. I'm at APL when my hair is damp now, and I couldn't possibly do an updo with all of my hair with hair sticks at this point. So don't feel bad about not being able to get hair sticks to stay!
Nice braids, rowie! The sectioning looks really good. :)

Aww, I suspected that. :( I measured my ponytail at 5" circumference.. and that's while it was heavily oiled and without my shortest layers, so I think it may be thicker. I've been having trouble wrangling it into anything but a peacock twist with a claw.
Bah.

I did and it actually made my hair drier, but I used very cheap honey, which apparently can make it not work. Plus my hair kinda hates the conditioner I used.

Your circumference is about an inch thicker than mine (I'm currently at 4.25", but that's not oiled and with pretty much all the layers caught in the pony), so... yeah. I use my octopus clip a lot. Have you tried French braiding? It works really well with layers and thick hair; I starting being able to do a French braid at about shoulder. It takes some practice, but I recommend giving it a try! :)

I am attempting a French braid, but it is pretty messy still. But I'm working on it! Just about the only thing I can use at this point is an octopus clip. I did order a Flexi-8, I'm hoping that will work.
Thanks for all the helpful suggestions!

Bah.
For a bit of a change have you tried a Linzi clip http://www.linshell.co.uk/ Apparently they do them in Walmart or Walgreens (I always confuse them).
Or else try a sectioned bun:
Grab your hair, split it in half and then swirl each part around the other a la cinnabun. I can just about get it to stick in my hair. :D

Thanks everyone for the wonderful comments! I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend so far. It was a bright sunny day here in New Hampshire USA. I went to the park today and had fun enjoying the weather. It's so nice to wear braided hairstyles when running around. I hope that all of you are exploring different types of hair styles. Please share them on here! I feed off of all your ideas. So far I'm thinking of trying out the Crown braid.

Ooh I never thought of visiting the poundshop. Such a good idea for me to check out next time. Last time I was in the UK was last summer. I was a visiting scholar at Exeter College at Oxford University. For the most part I stayed in the small town of Oxfordshire, and yet haven't really ventured out to other parts of England.
Yes I'll never do no poo anymore. I admire people who can go through the thread "No water, sebum only." Can you imagine....:p

Just think, if you want to grow your hair out from short, you'll have to go through the awkward stage at some point. If you continually cut it shorter when you're starting to go through the awkward stage you'll be in a perpetual awkward cycle.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I did a cassia treatment today (not Tuesday, but Saturday usually is when I do these things). Since I'm water-only, I keep it pretty simple most of the time but a few months ago I started using cassia and today was my 3rd treatment. Before I went water only I had some low-level scalp irritation that would result in dandruff, and while it got a LOT better, it never went away completely until I used cassia. I also wanted to cover up some of my white hairs (which blend well now, but they blend better after a cassia treatment). I don't think I use it often enough to get a real color benefit, but it does seem to add nice lowlights to my hair, at least temporarily. It dries my hair out some temporarily (because it strips out most of the oil) but I think I'm going to continue using it about once a month into the future.
I'm thinking about trying chamomile and/or catnip in the future and see if those work as well or better for color and scalp soothing.
Anyway, I've been taking pics the last few days and I'll be putting them up soon. :)
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
OK, so tonight DF and I went out to dinner, and we were joking around and I was playing with my hair and making it look all silly. Suddenly he got real serious after I pulled all of it back (my bangs have grown out enough to be included in a ponytail) and said, "You know, with no hair on your face, with all back like that, you look super creepy." I've been thinking the same thing for the past couple weeks: as I lose my bangs, I look weirder.
My facial structure is just too strong to not have bangs.
So...
After my shower, I dug up my hair scissors and gave myself a some face framing fringe! (say that 5 times fast!) I don't have any pics yet, but it looks soooooo much better, even though I kind of flubbed the right side. They're still long enough to tuck behind my ears if they're bugging, but when I put my hair up, they fall out, and keep my face from looking too severe. I didn't lose any length, and I'm happy with it.
I promise I'll have some pics tomorrow!

I'm playing around with catnip for conditioning purposes right now. I like it so far. I think next week I'm going to do catnip one wash and a deep conditioner when I do my second wash.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Rowie: your braids inspired me to figure out french braiding on my own head. I've been able to do other people for years, but not me. So I got a pretty decent braid last night before bed. I'm going to keep working on it then move on to dutch.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Hi all!
I started growing seriously last March, from a longish pixie. Now that I am in the shoulder grazing range I figured it's time to jump threads. :)
Initially, my goals were to stretch more time between trims, which during the pixie/shag phases are inevitable. It's been 3 months since my last microtrim, and I am trying to hold out longer. I can now make two french braids, without too many pins! Also, a higher-set ponytail with the help of barrettes to hold up the nape hairs. Just in time for summer!!
With my hair growth, I should reach a strong APL by March 2013-but one can always hope for more length! :)
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
So so tempted to do minor trims myself as the (last) hairdresser I went to layered my hair. I've got a "shelf" of hair that is chin length - the rest of the layers are approaching APL (2" away).
But I'm signed into the no trims for 2012. How to stop the urge?

In the etsy shop now...is there a recommendation for thin, fine hair? Should I go more teeth or less? What about the length of the fork? What do I need to know before investing?

Another vote for Grah-Toe. I haven't even received my fork yet and I think they're the best. Their customer service is AMAZING, make sure you send Kimi a message so she can help you get the best fork for your hair!

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Hi everyone! I'm joining in! :D
After a big chop last August, I've decided to start fresh and grow long, healthy hair :D Now that my hair is finally past shoulder(19 inches, yahoo!), I just can't wait for it to grow to APL(which is around 23 inches for me)! I hope to get there by the end of the summer, but I don't know if that's possible.
