Ahhh the classic "stylist-cut-stupid-layers" story. Sigh, I'm with you on that one! It sounds like we got a very similar cut (mine was back in April). The good news is that you are in the right place! Lots of great advice on healthy hair and growing past this slightly awkward stage.
And good for you for donating your hair. That is amazing. I hope karma smiles on you and increases your growth rate!
Welcome welcome!
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
browneyedsusan, i am so happy for you. I trimmed my mullet a lot as I went along, lol.
I measured the way you told me to, and 9'' from my ear holes [about where my pixie was cut to, too! :D] is about an inch from APL in front on me, so yeah my neck is probably a huge factor. I'll be apl in front faster than I'll be APL in back, even though my hair is about all the same length, maybe even longer in the back. Weird :p
My hair is noticeably longer. When I wear it down it lays on my sticky-outy rib between collarbone and APL, which is *super* exciting. I was waiting and waiting to get to that mini-milestone! ♥ In front I have about an inch and a half until APL, in back I have 3''. Probably due to the curve of the back and such.
When I braid my hair I can pull the braid to the left in front and it will just STAY THERE. The tassel rests right on my collarbone. :o so awesome.
Can anyone in here do a perfect cinnabun yet? My cinnabuns are looking neater and neater! Although I've cut most of the layers out of my hair, I have a lot of locks that like to stick out as if my hair was layered :p
ETA: Welcome, JessicaAnn! Sorry about the bad haircut :( I hate hairdressers! I've only gotten 2 good haircuts from a hairdresser in my entire life, and one of them wasn't even what I asked for!
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Thanks for the welcome! I have one hair-dresser I love. She has hair down past her waist herself. I had gone to this other, high end salon, because they were a donation site and I wanted to make sure that the donation was banded up and cut correctly. I should have just had them do a blunt cut and gone to my normal lady to get any kind of style done. But given that this was a very highly reccomended salon I thought they could handle a few long layers. I guess I was wrong (oh so very wrong).
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
My collarbone length hair is misbehaving.. After washing, the top layer is very very frizzy and almost straight, while the layers underneath are smooth and wavy. Sometimes I even get some curls in the hair behind the ears. As I want to grow it longer, I reallly would like to get rid of the frizz. It doesn't look very good and is a sign, I guess, of damaged hair -there are loads of shorter hairs sticking out everywhere. Need to get a silk pillowcase I suppose.. If I brush with a boar bristle brush, it gets very smooth and silky, but it stays like that for about 60 seconds. Any tips, maybe something protective to put just on the "outside" of the hair?
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Have you tried an acv rinse @askan? It's supposed to be good at smoothing the cuticle. I like a bit of coconut oil before I use the BBB, this seems to really control my frizz, along with letting it dry completely before I touch it (which is really hard)

Thask shola-faye! I have been doing AVC-rinces but not in a while, I'll try it next time I wash. My hair gets too oily and greasy easily if I use oils higher up, but I've been using my regular conditioner as a kind of cream for my ends and frizz, just to disguise it. I noticed yesterday that my hair kind of calms down during the day. At the end of the night it looked ok.

Sounds like you have a cotton pillowcase, huh? That would cause the frizz on top, especially if it calms down during the day.

Hey Askan, my hair is the exact same way. I use a satin pillowcase too. I think it might have something more to do with my hair being porous and when I CO wash or shampoo wash it in the morning, it opens the cuticle more and lets more moisture/humidity in. And by night, the cuticle has closed more so my hair is smoother. That is my own random and non-scientific theory that I made up. :P
