I think my layers are resting on my shoulders!
I feel confused about split ends. I have tons of little hairs sticking out all over my head. Are these split ends and should I do anything about them? I really want to get as much length as possible but i don't think it looks good. They also don't feel very nice to the touch.
Thanks sooo much for the link. I love that kinda messy chic look. I actually did buy the book, and I liked all the pretty updo's. The one thing that I find with almost all hair tutorials no matter the medium is that they use a lot of heat and back-combing. I actually cringed when reading her hair care tips (LHC brainwash :P) I'm gonna try to work around it though, as I don't want to damage my hair. I do want to graduate from this thread eventually ;) not that you guys aren't wonderful. But all in all, those style work very well for the hair in this thread, prolly longer too. So I'm superexcited. And hair romance describes my relationship with my hair so well :P I mean we have our ups and downs (haha) but we're very attached to each other.
Split ends are hairs that have damaged ends. If you look at the tip of the hair, you can see it is split into 2 or more pieces, giving the very end a frayed look. What you have are likely baby hairs, hair that is regrowing after being shed and going through a resting phase before starting to grow again. The hairs take time to gain enough length to lay down properly with the rest of your hair, so they can look rather unruly without something to smooth them down. If they are damaged hairs, you can tell by looking at the ends to see if they have been broken off or otherwise damaged. If they are, you need to change your hair routine, because it is likely mechanical or chemical damage if the hairs are short.
Thank you EtherealOde!
So, if they are just baby hairs, and I just let them be will they eventually blend in and look more groomed once I have more length? And if some of them are damaged and I trim the ends, will those short hairs also eventually behave?
What kathie said, with one addition. If the short hairs were damaged, and have broken off...you will need more than trims to get them to behave. I don't know your hair or routine, so it is hard to give advice specific to you. But I can give some good general advice.
Try not to use heat to style your hair, as it can be damaging. This includes blowdryers, curling/flatironing, hot rollers, and hot combing.
Bleaching should be done by a professional to minimize damage. However, it will damage your hair, no avoiding it and no repairing it either. And the sun will damage it too. To get very long hair, you will ned to wear it up a lot to protect the ends as they are most prone to damage from wind and friction.
Backcombing is bad. Don't do it. Always be gentle when brushing or combing your hair, and use as few products on it as possible. Try to stick to natural products and oils.
When washing your hair, be gentle. Never pile your hair on top of your head to wash it, and never scrub roughly. Gentle, gentle, gentle is the key. Use conditioner and as you gain length or if you have very curly hair, detangle while the conditioner is in for best effect. Wear your hair up at night, and/or sleep either in a sleeping cap or use a silk pillow so you avoid friction and pulling damage at night.
Use caution in the hair accessories you use, because many can cause breakage and other damage.
There are lots of other long hair rules, but I don't want to tell you things you may already know. These are the basics, and worked best for me so far. If your hair was damaged, these rules will help the damage grow out so it can be cut off. If they are just baby hairs, common to everyone, then these rules will help to insure they grow out and stay as damage free as possible while growing.
I'm at 19.5 inches now and last time I measured, I should be APL at 21 inches.
Well let me tell you, I am nowhere near APL. The longer my hair gets, the curlier it gets and the more it shrinks. It looks exactly the same as it did two months ago.
I know it's longer, and I can tell by the fringe and the front layers especially, but it sure doesn't look longer. It just looks like it's a different shape right now, and it's not a good shape. It can best be described as "a real mess"
Please let this stage be over soon!
I think I was here when I first joined LHC. I couldn't be bothered to go through every page to i'll just re-introduce myself :)
I have, unfortunately, been shoulder length for a very long time and after having 3 inches of damage cut off am ready to say bye bye to that length.
My current measure in is 17 inches and I should be at APL by 22 inches - 5 inches to go :) (doesn't really seem that much)
