Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I gave up... I trimmed off a bit over half an inch last night. I can tell it is shorter, but I can still call it shoulder length and it still can be put up, as much as it can at this length.
I got rid of many of the longest layers but still have eleventy billion more. Plus side... I didn't see any split ends and it has been a really really long time since I had a trim. I think I will wait til the end of March and re-evaluate trimmage again then.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I am in the thick of it with you guys! It's kind of an awkward length right now for sure, but I know it will pay off!

I totally get this frustration your having, Curly Cap! It is the curse of us curlies. When my hair is wet it is at "can I call this APL?" when it's dry it's about 3 or so inches away. It's gonna be easter for me I reckon till I'm at APL! Hang in there! :)
On another note, I have had to heavily S+D my horrid, velcro ended layers again after only two weeks cos they are "grabby" and tangly AGAIN. My layers are not even shoulder length! It seems like there are more splits than normal hair and the taper is ridiculous.
Even before LHC it is not as if I heat styled much, and I only did semi 10 vol dye like every 3 months-- why are they so damaged, velcro-ey and split??????? Ugh.

Ignore the stringiness, oil is a pain in the butt to get out of my hair.
Edit: wow, I realized the oversized shirt makes me look like I have armpits pretty much at my elbows....now THAT would be a long distance to grow!!
Nice!
I think that trim will do your hair a whole lot of good. I figure we need to get our hair in decent enough condition during the SL-APL stage so that it grows in nicely. So good job! I bet you'll get a nice growth spurt in a few weeks ;)

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Now that we're nearing the end of the year, are any of you considering doing a No Trims in 2012 challenge?
I'm thinking very seriously about it. Since coming to LHC in March 2011, I've had 3 trims. My hair is more or less (what I'd consider) blunt. I had a shag before and hated growing out the layers. Now, the front is still a bit layered and I have thin bangs that are now to my cheekbones. The few remaining layers don't bother me.
Depending on how my hair is looking come December, I am considering having one final little trim then before embarking on the challenge.
Anyone else contemplating this?

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
^^ No. my hair crumbles at the drop of a hat at the best of times. Maybe 2013. Good luck!
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I am, but I have to go to the salon for bang trims. Hope I can keep telling them I don't need a trim on the rest of my hair.
I felt the same way as everyone else with the growing stage, now that I am well into shoulder length with lots of layers, I am liking my hair again.
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I'm so happy! The tips of my ends brush APL when it's wet and straight! :D And here I thought it would take AGES. My hair barely touched shoulders only like 8 months ago.
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Since summer of this year, I have actually challenged myself to a goal of doing no trims until June 2012. As for why June 2012, I am likely going to travel abroad then and I think fresh ends might help my hair behave a little better with the sudden change in climate and all(and admittedly I would just like my hair to look nice).
I am hoping I will be around BSL by that time, but of course I really have no idea how that will work out or not!
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
The trim I did last night was... I believe, my first trim this year. I might have had one in February, but I can't recall. 2012 is the year I am going to work on slowly trimming out my million layers. So, that's a no join for me, but I will wish those trying some good luck!!!

Not for me!! Summer growth spurt always makes my ends a little wonky, then I want to clean it up and look nice for the holidays. So I will always have a regular trim in the fall. I might add one in the spring too just so my hairstylist doesn't get on my case or forget about me ;)
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Feeling better about my hair after managing a slightly different half-updo. Still can't wait for the top layers to get past this awkward stage, though!
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Not trimming isn't really much of a challenge for me. I consider a trip to the hairdresser to be a chore, like regular dental and medical check-ups. I plan to get my ends freshened up in January, as my last trim was in January this year, then probably won't visit again til January 2013. :)
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I think once my hair gets to APL and my layers have grown out some, I can be happy with it and enjoy letting it grow on its own time. But until then I will be painfully impatient. My shortest layers are slightly above my chin and the bottom layers are just past my shoulders. At this point, it's just too short to do anything with it. I can't even put it up without half a dozen bobby pins.
My hair seems to be growing slowly at this point, and I'm hoping that will change. At least until I get to APL. I just want to reach APL, pleeeeeeaaaasseeee!
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Not me! I have ends that tend more toward the straggly side than not, and regular small trims keep them fresh and showing growth as much as possible.
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I'm torn too.
My hair is on the thinnish side, so I don't know if it'll realistically withstand no trims for a whole year. I know come January, I'll be on an oiling and bunning/braiding routine to try to get through the freezing, dry climate. My hair is the worst in the winter. I figure this and no trimming might help me forget about it for a while.
I might try to go at least Jan-Jun and see how I'm doing. Maybe I'll end up trimming before summer.
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I'm going to have to say no to the challenge. My ends are getting nasty and need a trim, but I'm waiting til at least February to get it done! That's the beauty of having a hair stylist for a mom, no appointments, just, "Hey, Mom, can you trim my hair?"!:)
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
My hair grows funny, I don't think I'll ever be able to get away with no trims. One side grows faster than the other LOL.
I seem to be having luck with micro trims every 8-12 weeks though, just to even things up. I tend to take half a cm off the the longer side at least and sometimes just the width of the scissor edge off the shorter side.. I want it to grow but I want it to still look even!
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I am planning to round out two years of no trimming this February, but after that, I'm in the for the rest of 2012, and probably most of 2013.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I am back to this thread after chopping off all my layers. I feel so much better about my hair and I feel like it was necessary to get rid of the nuisance of layers haha. I can't wait to get to APL again. :D

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
ChrisDee - our hair is just about the same length! I do not plan on trimming my hair at all, heading for waist and beyond without scissors touching it. I just started being able to bun it, I can do a french twist, a sock bun, or use a claw clip to hold it up and most of it stays. How can it grow if I cut it off?
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Ohhhhhhh, KD, look how BEAUTIFUL your hair looks! :applause: You'll be at waist in no time, it's amazing how quickly one accumulates length without trims! :cheese:
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I'm in this category.:)
I'm growing my hair out for the second time after cutting it from almost waist to shoulders.
My hair is really thin and I want to see if I can grow it again but thicker this time. (by taking vitamins, doing regular trims, and taking better care of my hair).
I would post a picture here but I can't figure out how. When I figure it out I will.:)
Good luck everyone!
by the way, I recommend regular trims for those of us that have fine, thin hair. I grew my hair out without trims, but the result wasn't great. Then you have to cut off all the bad ends eventually anyways so I think its better to keep the ends nice all the time.:)
I am hoping to gain good quality length this time versus poor quality length. It might take longer but then I won't be unhappy with my hair and chop it all off.;)
It's important to like your hair at every stage on the journey.:)

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I have incredible news!!
Since I cut off 3" my growth rate has increased incredibly. Before it was at .25" a month. Now, in one week, it's grown nearly .5"! I can hardly believe it! It must be a miracle! :D
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I got my trim today...1" off everything (basically just getting rid of the wispy, scraggly, tangly racer hairs, and keeping the rest). I like it! My hair feels so tangle-free and I feel much more put-together now.
After the trim I have 6 solid, shiny, tangle-free inches of "net" growth since my last trim in December 2010....I'm very happy with that!
ETA: here's a picture of my hair after the trim. I used my Caruso rollers.

Haha, you noticed! :) I'm pretty happy I got them working ... here's what I did for that picture:
- cone-free conditioner and oil in my hair, but no other products
- lots of rollers all rolling away from my face
- steam each roller and lid for 2-3 seconds each (more steam would just prolong the amount of drying time it needs and make my hair frizzy and soggy afterwards)
- leave the steam hole pointing towards the ground whenever possible (supposedly more steam gets to your hair this way)
- when I finish putting the rollers, I blow each steam hole for a few seconds with a hot hair dryer, to force the air through the roller
- take the rollers out immediately but I DON'T TOUCH the hair
- sit outside in the cold/dry winter air for 10-15 minutes (I think this is the step that makes the biggest difference)
- then I can finger-comb it to my heart's content and it stays springy and shiny.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
HOOOOOOOOOOOORAY! :D
Yee-haw, I *finally* made it to this thread! I've been patiently waiting since I joined for my longest layers to get to my shoulders so that I can come join the shoulder to APL thread! I don't know exactly how many inches it is for me to get from shoulder to APL (will measure tomorrow probably), but I'm so glad to not be on this journey alone! If I'm super lucky, I'll be at APL in 8 months, just in time for my wedding. And even if I'm not, I know I'll be close. I hear getting to the next length usually seems like it takes forever, but as long as I get there I'll be happy.
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
^^ Congrats on making it to shoulder! Welcome to the thread and happy growing! :)

Well the other strategy I thought of was to do regular self-trims a la Feye's method. Microtrims that is. I've never cut my own hair before, but I figure once I'm past APL, it might be doable.

PixieStarr, congratulations on your milestone! :flower:
Jaine, your hair looks AWESOME! And you didn't lose much length at all - that's exactly the kind of trim I'm hoping to get in January. :)

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Just got trimmed the other day, mostly to freshen up my layers. I'm frustrated with the current length because it's just long enough to be heavy and topple sideways in something like a peacock twist, and so slippery it slides out of a lot of styles. A little longer and it'll coil around itself more which will help it stay put in updos but for now I've just been wearing it down a lot.

Is it because the electrical outlets are different in Europe?
I was thinking ... I bet someone could simulate caruso rollers on the stovetop. It's just water and steam. I have a pot with a tightly-fitting lid that has a tiny hole on the lid for steam to escape. If I boil water in the pot, steam comes out of that little hole. I could put a foam roller over the steam hole for a few seconds and then roll my hair with it.
