Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I thought I'd be off-line for a while as I am on a surf camp this week. Then I discovered that these days obviously every self-respecting camp has internet. So you guys take a guess on which site I end up hanging out :D

I have exactly the same. In fact I think a GIbson tuck makes me look about 50 years older than I am

Check out www.etsy.com. A lot of shops have very reasonable shipping all over the world. I seem to recall you're in Europe, right?

I've read people say that it is like a clarifying shampoo in effect. Well, my hair has never been so light. It's very fine so as a result I have major flyaways and static now it's dry. So next time I try it I'm going to do a heavy oiling first. I read that aloe vera afterwards could help with the static too but I can't buy anything else for my hair this month!!
Waving to my hair odyssey twin

Oh I really hope I didn't put you onto something that's horrible for your hair. I don't have issues with flyaways, but I don't really have fine hair either and I've also been using some aloe vera gel recently to crunch through my hair when wet - in the hope of bringing out the waves more. I'm not sure it's been doing anything for the waves but maybe it does help with flyaways :D. Let me know how it goes!!

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Hi everyone! I've decided to join in for some moral support. I had grown out to BSL but did a big chop a couple months ago to get rid of dye damage. The longest part of my hair is about an inch past shoulder, but I have a lot of layers, as the individual hairs are all about the same length. That means hair less than chin length in the front. I'm really hoping to get through this awkward stage as soon as possible!
I've been using headbands and barrettes a lot to keep the hair out of my face. Occasionally my curls will dry in a good pattern to wear down, but most of the time I brush them out and pull it back. I can get my hair in 2 french braids, but it won't stay more than a few minutes at this length. So I'm not really enjoying this phase at all, since braiding is my favorite style.
I've been on a water only routine for almost a full year and I love my hair texture now, but it was definitely easier with longer hair.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Piratejenny, thanks for the link to etsy. So many beautiful hairthings, I need to get married again, just to have an excuse to buy and wear some of them :-)

Try javacentric on ebay. Australian based, yet they do ship internationally and I have not been disappointed with one of their sticks, forks or combs yet.

Thanks, from what i know, they do free shipping every once in a while, so just keep checking their site :D The last time was in october, and before that in july, but sometimes only for a few days.
The hair donut from claire's turned out to be a little too big, i can't do a wrapping sock bun with it, and with a regular sock bun my hair covers it just barely, and with some spots showing. So i guess i'll just have to grow my hair a little longer for that to work :(
On the other hand, i tried it with my regular rolled sock today and it worked :D so yay i have a sock bun in my hair now!

LOL so I popped over there just to take a look and ended up buying one anyway! This one http://www.flexi8.com/0093.html?id=FkVoupmN.
Piratejenny I think the rhassoul is going to work out great, once I sort out the moisturising side of things :) Will try it with aloe vera next. Also I used a pretty strong citric acid rinse. They can make my hair a bit crunchy all by themselves. So I'm no where near giving up on it :D

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
What do you use the small flexi8 for? I have one in small (bought a used one on a dutch hair forum), but i have absolutely no clue what to do with it
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Today was hair measuring day and I grew just over an inch this month! According to calculations I should be APL by late July/early August. Can't wait! My goal was to get to APL by Septemember 1st for my best friends wedding and it looks like I'll make it.

Depending on your hair half-ups or what I used to call "quarter-ups" (just using a chunk of hair from over each ear).

Thanks for your comments on the previous page lunamummy!:blossom: I also experience static and flyaways when it is dry, more like I get that and a mixture of frizzy hairs. :( However, what works for me is just simply using a good slather of extra virgin coconut oil, which I know to some can be devastating because of the crunchy texture like effect it has on some people when using heavy amounts of it. Too bad I can't try out aloe vera since I'm oddly allergic to it. But i'm glad you shared your info on the clay, which i'll have to try from hennasooq.

Totally agree, although I get intimidated sometimes with our APL friends who gladly stays or visits us. ;)
You and MegaMystery sold me on buying a flexi8! Ok I'll branch out and try the flexi instead of just staying with one brand. But I think i'll wait until they have free shipping now that I know they have those days! I'll be keeping a lookout as well!:eye: Maybe someone in here (including myself) can alert us when that happens....

Have you tried doing a half-up pony do, but since your hair is thick it might be tricky trying to get less hair. I've seen on youtube how tiny the mini flexi 8 looks. :o
Or you can do a seashell bun and on the center of that bun (or the center of any bun for that matter) you can accessorize it with the mini flexi. hmmm just a thought, if you had a pair you could use them like side barrettes.

My Tuesday Treatment for Today:stirpot:
Well today I kept my treatment really simple. It's that time for me to Clarify my hair from build up. I used VO5 vanilla mint tea clarifying shampoo and conditioner. I let the conditioner sit for about 10 minutes. I decided to try white vinegar instead of ACV for my final rinse. I've read in another board that white vinegar is supposedly less stinky and does not leave a sticky residue that ACV is known to do on some people. Let me just say, I love white vinegar over ACV. I'm now letting my hair air dry and the smell is less strong than ACV. I'm still waiting on getting my lavendar oil that Sillage recommended for my next vinegar rinse. It definitely feels stronger to me since I have one little scab on my scalp and I can feel it burn a little, but overall I feel like my scalp feels a lot cleaner then with ACV.:afro:

I'm hoping I'll be able to do a tails up, or maybe even a pony, as my hair is so fine and thin. Perhaps you will be able to do a half up? or catch two side braids together at the back, that might work. Like Tisiloves 'quarter-up' :)

I find white vinegar less stinky too, although it's still pretty strong smelling! You'll have to let us know if lavender makes a difference.

Thanks, I damp bunned, some of the curl stuck. My undercut is still brushing shoulder, which severly limits updo-ability, but I have just found out that I can get a hair-gami to work :)

No you're not weird! ACV for me leaves a sticky residue, if it didn't then I'd still be using it. I think some people in my family think I'm weird for doing vinegar rinses.;) It must be the only people that understand is LHC peeps.:o

I asked my mom for the ACV after I got back from school. She looked at me like I was growing a second head
Today is my only day off all week, and tonight I plan to oil my scalp with castor/avocado/aloe vera mix and then use a moisture mask after I shampoo it out. I might do an ACV rinse after all that, but I'm not sure yet.

Oooh you gave me an idea for my next tuesday treatment, except i'll have to substitute the aloe with plain white yogurt since i'm allergic to aloe. :afro: That's why I love these treatments we share, and here I was thinking I was running out of ideas. Well I hope you have a good work week! :)

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I want to buy another oil to moisturize my ends - right now I have castor, olive and argan oil. Would coconut oil or avocado oil or something else be the best for my damaged ends??
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Coconut oil put on damp ends does wonders for my hair. :)

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
My treatments didn't go as planned, but I did give myself a scalpmassage while stuck in traffic on my way home... and I slapped a protein mask on after washing yesterday, and now my hair feels nice and soft. The trick seems to be to use protein once in a while, but not too often... I really hope to get some quiet evenings shortly, so I can take my time pampering my hair!!! I miss these lovely treatments and experiments...

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Wow rowie it seems like you're at APL stretched, congrats! :D
For my first time doing the Treatment Tuesday :stirpot: (I was going to do it yesterday but I waited just for this thread):
- overnight oiling (Neelibhringadi Ayurvedic Hair Oil on the scalp and coconut oil on the length)
- scalp scrub (EVOO+granulated sugar)
- clarifying (Suave Naturals Daily Clarifying Shampoo)
- chelating (Itely Chelating Treatment Shampoo)
- ACV rinse (I didn't want to use regular conditioner)
- Cassia + conditioner (4 hour mask on my hair: 50 g cassia+water left for 4 hours to process before putting it on my hair, mixed with 8 spoons of Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition Conditioner)
- CO (twice) with Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition Conditioner to wash out the Cassia
The whole thing took about 24 hours total. And here is a photo now that my hair dried:

Honestly, if the damage to your ends is bad, you should probably just trim :( I trimmed mine a few weeks ago, breaking my "no trims until august" pledge to get rid of my damage, and I'm glad I did. My hemline looks thicker and my hair just feels better. Be honest with yourself about the damage; if you can oil your ends enough to make them feel alright then go ahead, but if not a microtrim would be best.
Coconut oil would be best for the ends, I think. I've used avocado on mine and it works alright, but it's no comparison to coconut.
For Treatment Tuesday, I oiled my scalp in the morning, and just washed my hair with my regular ol' shampoo. Instead of conditioner, I used a moisture mask. I also tried to take an updated length shot, but I couldn't get a decent one and I'm going to have to wait a few weeks until I can make DF take one for me :p I'm going to give my scalp a little avocado oil, and then head to bed.
ETA: I'm soooooo close to APL now, about 3/4" away. I'd probably be a lot closer if my hair didn't still do that stupid flip at the end. I'm so mad because my work uniform includes a polo shirt, and the collar just makes the flip more pronounced and my hair looks barely shoulder length unless I put it in a ponytail. I'm growing my hair because I want to be able to show off my length, but as it gets longer it just looks shorter.
Also, an update on my Grah-Toe fork! I've selected a fork (it's going to be a surprise for you all ;)) and Kimi is holding it on layaway for me until I get paid next Friday. I'm so excited!

Thanks Roscata:love:, but I think I still have a long way if I want APL hair without stretching. Ughhhh sometimes it sucks being a wurly/curly, but don't get me wrong I love it that with certain toys like forks, wurly/curly hair I think works well with them.
I love the color of your hair and your super shiny results! The work and time was well worth it! Now go out and show off that beautiful mane.
Thanks for your list!:skittles: Two products I'll be trying out for the first time from your list is the:
- clarifying (Naturals Daily Clarifying Shampoo)
a) seems like this would be better than the cheap ole brand I use (V05)
- chelating (Itely Chelating Treatment Shampoo)
b) I've never tried or understood the concept of chelating (guess I'll be researching this) or it's primary purpose.

oooh I'm so excited about this! You'll definitely be able to do solid cinnamon bun, and all sorts of buns, because the prongs will be able to lock it into place. Please keep us updated. I wonder if you'll be able to wear your fork at work?
I find it fascinating that as a straight hair you feel your hair looks short. I don't see it that way, probably because since I'm a wurly/curly head I already face that stigma of having short hair, and the only way to prove my length is by stretching. I do see your length, but maybe next time try taking your pictures a little bit closer, and then we'll be able to see your true length. I think sometimes when we take pics a little far it can make all our hairs look shorter than it is (just my theory)? If i'm making any sense... Because when you showed your shots of you wearing sticks, your hair looks long to me.;)

I wonder, too, but it won't matter because I'm going back to school on the 10th and I might not have the fork yet then. It won't ship for 2 weeks and I'm thinking about having it sent to my address at school so I know that I get it, instead of my parents getting it after I leave
The far away-ness of the mirror I'm using might be part of my problem. While I was gone, it seems like my mom has done away with my full length mirror, and now I can't bring it to the bathroom to see the back of my head properly :( As soon as I get back, I'm making DF take a proper length shot. I need a new avatar anyway ;)

I love curly hair, but you are right wurls/curls do eat up length.
Thank you! :D
The clarifying shampoo is Suave (I need to edit my original post to add that in), It's only about a dollar or two more expensive than V05, but it is clear (colorless) and it has worked better for me than the V05 clarifying shampoo.
Chelating shampoos remove mineral build-up, I use mainly to get rid of hard water build-up but it also works for chlorine (pool water) and other mineral build-up.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I'm finally at APL when damp! Hurrah!
I'm not calling it "real" APL until the hemline is clearly at or below the towel when dry and wavy, so that will be another couple of months. Still, though, it's fun to see a milestone of progress!

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Thanks, thirstylocks! ;) Greek mythology is full of crazy stuff.
ravenheather, that's a really pretty fork!
I keep thinking about buying a fork, preferably something with 5" tines, but I think I'm going to hold off until I'm past APL when dry and then reward myself by venturing into forks. That will be a new thing for me, since I didn't know where to find anything like that when I had waist-length hair > 15 years ago. I'm pretty klutzy and have thick, somewhat slippery hair that likes to spit out pins and combs, so I'm guessing I'd have a hard time getting everything to stay with a fork if the tines are < 5". I'm also leaning towards a 4-tine fork.
Anybody here with thick hair have experience with different tine lengths, or different hair stick lengths, for that matter? I'd love to hear about other thick-haired people's experiences with different tine lengths, and how long their hair had to be before they could get an updo to stay put with a single fork or hair stick (excluding half-ups, that is). I've also been contemplating hair sticks, but worried that I'd need something 7" or so to keep my hair from just springing off the ends. I'm guessing the hair stick may not work for me until waist anyway. :P

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
My hair is fairly thick, and also pretty slippery. I have a pair of wood hair sticks that are ~6" long, and I can barely make a bun using both of them. My hair is ~.5" away from APL right now. I usually oil my hair fairly liberally before attempting to use sticks.

ravenheather, that's a really pretty fork!

Definitely not from experience, but I think you can do less tines with thicker hair. Just contact kimi at grahtoe when you are ready on one of their sites or on facebook. If you describe your hair she can help you with size and tines etc.
As far as first buns, a cinnabun or a lazy wrap bun are some of the first usually. But you can hold a french twist with a fork too.
