Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Alright I promise I'll stop obsessing over my growth rate. There is no reason to complain, I know.
I will measure on June 12 (as I had measured on May 12 when I joined) and will see how much growth I got in a month.
Alright everyone chin up, the hell of the inbetween SL to APL will eventually end for all of us! :cheese:

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I have to use a LOT of willpower not to measure every day (or more like every few hours). I have a strict rule of only measuring once a month, otherwise I go insane. That doesn't stop me from obsessively checking in the mirror though :P My hair is extremely difficult to measure, since it's pretty curly, even when wet, and I don't brush my hair so I never get the same measurements. That's why I measure my natural colour growing out, so it's pretty accurate. Only six days until I get to measure again!!
Speaking of spreadsheets, I do have a little book where I have a hair-care-o-meter where I have to cross off brushing, washing, vitamins, massages, monistat use, if I wore my hair up, pretty much everything. I think it's very encouraging to know that I am doing everything I can to max up my growth.. :) and if that makes me a little bit nuts.. well.. I tell myself that I am going to chill a little when I reach BSL but you know how these things go. Unstretched APL next. Grow, grow GROW!

Does it seem like anyone else is hovering about an inch away from APL? I'm excited to be this close! :)

Girlthursday, yup- I am :D When its soaking wet I'm there.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I think I'm about half an inch from APL, but I'm not 100% sure... I'm THAT close! Next time I straighten (eek don't kill me!) I'll find out for sure. It's the only way I can get an accurate measurement.

When I stretch my hair at the front my ends are at my first arm pit crease! But unstretched should be in august (I hope).

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I snapped a couple of pics showing how close I am last night. I think I’m actually more addicted to taking pics than measuring.
My hair was damp from having a shower, in some pics I’m just at APL (see lop-sided towel pic) and in others my hair is just above. Anyways, I’m going to call it when its dry and at APL. I’m still thinking that will happen around August too. :D:pray:

I'm about an inch away. Just measured tonight. :) I think the summer has been kind to me so far.

Kathie, you're soooo close!

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I love the hair-care o meter idea!!! I will definitely try this out.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Painfully close! I’m enjoying this length though- my buns don’t need to be as tight to hold anymore. I’ve always been a fan of the loose bun look.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Slowly creeping passed shoulder....all the way to no man's land.

Taken last night. Not a good shot for telling where APL is on me but I'd say based on my measuring I have about two inches to go until I'm brushing it!

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I am back in this thread after leaving the BSL to waist thread! I had my hair cut to remove most of the dye after letting my greys grow out since September of last year. It feels good to have mostly virgin hair again even if I did have to lose a lot of length! I still have some dye on the ends to remove but I am waiting a few more months to cut it off since I look horrible in really short cuts. Right now it's just above shoulder length, and layered (The layers were so more of the dye could be cut off). There's about an inch and a half left on the ends of dye, then it will be completely gone once I cut again!!! I'm going to be here awhile I think, this is where I started when I joined the LHC. Life (and hair) is a circle. :)

Anyone else here also feels guilty if they don't grow enough? Or is it just psycho-ocd-perfectionnists like me? :o
2 inches a month?!! :agape:
I'm lucky to get .5!!!!
I am checking in with a bit of a milestone for me though, I just hit shoulder at Xmas, and posted pics of my uneven hemline in April, I've been microtrimming the edges to even it up for a while and it's about midway to APL now. (Pics in album)
But the milestone for me is I can finally use a hairfork :cheese:
This is happy days! But it also sadly means I'll be spending all my cash on the swap board from now on

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I think I've hit a stall. I'm pretty sure it was related to the diet pills I was taking (not anymore) but I definately don't think I've gained any length in quite a while. :justy: I think I'm going to pick up some rooiboos tea today. Grumble.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I am growing impatient w/ my hair. Grow hair, grow! In the meantime while I feel stalled at shoulder length, I am trying to distract myself by trying to decide what kind of bangs I should have. Or, should I just grow them out? Hmmmmmm..... In some respects, I think I look better w/ bangs and that it softens my look, but on the other hand, there is something classic and timeless about long hair w/out bangs, and I WANT that, too. Decisions, decisions....

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I'm getting irritated with my hair lately. It's almost APL, but it curls up on the ends, making it look like it's barely past shoulder! In another few months, it will (hopefully) start weighing itself down so the length is visible, but for now it's irritating!!
Aside from that, I oiled my ends after I washed it last and it feels so smooth all the way to the ends! I've been forgetting to oil it, and forgot how much better it makes my hair look and feel! :D

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Sometimes I feel like there aren't very many cute updos that I can do at this length, especially since I have some layers. But then today I found a blog called Hair Romance and WOW!
She has shorter than APL hair with layers near chin-length and can do lots of different beautiful updos. She even offers a e-book with tutorials. I'm excited to try some of these looks!

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Just updated my profile pic. My hair IS growing, but it seems to be taking its time. :)

I know what you mean, on both counts! My frustration is with the sides of my hair, they're STILL too freakin short for any updo that doesn't start with a ponytail in an elastic. And I oiled my ends after I CO washed yesterday, which I have also been forgetting to do, and my hair looks and feels much better as well - but of course it didn't add any length to the sides. :D

She does some great styles! They look really pretty. I wish I was more updo inedpt as I think they look really good, especially since it's short hair you wouldn't guess. I think my short layers would stop most of these from working though. I often just clip my hair back and all my short layers fall forward so it looks like I still have the a-line bob I spent most of last year growing out :p

What a great site! There were some very pretty updos in there. I'm going to try without buying though ;)

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I am new to LHC but have been trying to grow out my neck length hair from 2010. It is now 18" which is a little below shoulder length for me. (My hair has always grown very slow and is thin and fine). My hair was seriously damaged from non-stop perms for years so I am learning to let it go and let it grow. Thanks to everyone for all the information that is posted. I have been reading it for months now and trying a little bit at a time. My hair is pretty healthy now and I am enjoying the feel of it! :) I have used black tea and cinnamon rinses, coconut oil, co, and EVOO with rosemary and lavendar EO. I take a prenatal vitamen and a hair, skin and nails supplement. It seems like it is slow growth so any slow growers out there that have suggestions I am all ears!

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I've been trying to grow out my shoulder length hair for about 1.5 yrs now, and its stayed the same length since I've been cutting it to get rid of all the damage and layers. I'm in the same rut where the sides are shorter than the back, so I didnt think I could pull it all back...until now! I'm gonna check out that link. Thanks for it!

I wouldn't buy, except I'm such a newbie at styling my hair and looking finished... I really need all the help I can get. :)

I think my layers are resting on my shoulders!

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I feel confused about split ends. I have tons of little hairs sticking out all over my head. Are these split ends and should I do anything about them? I really want to get as much length as possible but i don't think it looks good. They also don't feel very nice to the touch.

Thanks sooo much for the link. I love that kinda messy chic look. I actually did buy the book, and I liked all the pretty updo's. The one thing that I find with almost all hair tutorials no matter the medium is that they use a lot of heat and back-combing. I actually cringed when reading her hair care tips (LHC brainwash :P) I'm gonna try to work around it though, as I don't want to damage my hair. I do want to graduate from this thread eventually ;) not that you guys aren't wonderful. But all in all, those style work very well for the hair in this thread, prolly longer too. So I'm superexcited. And hair romance describes my relationship with my hair so well :P I mean we have our ups and downs (haha) but we're very attached to each other.

Split ends are hairs that have damaged ends. If you look at the tip of the hair, you can see it is split into 2 or more pieces, giving the very end a frayed look. What you have are likely baby hairs, hair that is regrowing after being shed and going through a resting phase before starting to grow again. The hairs take time to gain enough length to lay down properly with the rest of your hair, so they can look rather unruly without something to smooth them down. If they are damaged hairs, you can tell by looking at the ends to see if they have been broken off or otherwise damaged. If they are, you need to change your hair routine, because it is likely mechanical or chemical damage if the hairs are short.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Thank you EtherealOde!
So, if they are just baby hairs, and I just let them be will they eventually blend in and look more groomed once I have more length? And if some of them are damaged and I trim the ends, will those short hairs also eventually behave?

The shedding and re-growing process is constant so we always have those new hairs that are on their way to blending. And damaged hair that is trimmed does indeed eventually behave :D

What kathie said, with one addition. If the short hairs were damaged, and have broken off...you will need more than trims to get them to behave. I don't know your hair or routine, so it is hard to give advice specific to you. But I can give some good general advice.
Try not to use heat to style your hair, as it can be damaging. This includes blowdryers, curling/flatironing, hot rollers, and hot combing.
Bleaching should be done by a professional to minimize damage. However, it will damage your hair, no avoiding it and no repairing it either. And the sun will damage it too. To get very long hair, you will ned to wear it up a lot to protect the ends as they are most prone to damage from wind and friction.
Backcombing is bad. Don't do it. Always be gentle when brushing or combing your hair, and use as few products on it as possible. Try to stick to natural products and oils.
When washing your hair, be gentle. Never pile your hair on top of your head to wash it, and never scrub roughly. Gentle, gentle, gentle is the key. Use conditioner and as you gain length or if you have very curly hair, detangle while the conditioner is in for best effect. Wear your hair up at night, and/or sleep either in a sleeping cap or use a silk pillow so you avoid friction and pulling damage at night.
Use caution in the hair accessories you use, because many can cause breakage and other damage.
There are lots of other long hair rules, but I don't want to tell you things you may already know. These are the basics, and worked best for me so far. If your hair was damaged, these rules will help the damage grow out so it can be cut off. If they are just baby hairs, common to everyone, then these rules will help to insure they grow out and stay as damage free as possible while growing.

I'm at 19.5 inches now and last time I measured, I should be APL at 21 inches.
Well let me tell you, I am nowhere near APL. The longer my hair gets, the curlier it gets and the more it shrinks. It looks exactly the same as it did two months ago.
I know it's longer, and I can tell by the fringe and the front layers especially, but it sure doesn't look longer. It just looks like it's a different shape right now, and it's not a good shape. It can best be described as "a real mess"
Please let this stage be over soon!

This is my issue as well. We are the same length!
I am so insanely jealous of my straight haired friends.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I think I was here when I first joined LHC. I couldn't be bothered to go through every page to i'll just re-introduce myself :)
I have, unfortunately, been shoulder length for a very long time and after having 3 inches of damage cut off am ready to say bye bye to that length.
My current measure in is 17 inches and I should be at APL by 22 inches - 5 inches to go :) (doesn't really seem that much)
