Yes, I'm thinking August I will graduate from this thread. All b/c I just stopped trimming and just tried to ignore how cruddy it looked as it passed shoulder.

Well this is a little discouraging:

Not much growth at all this month - I'd thought with the warmer weather I'd be seeing a little more length. Oh well - it'll get there eventually....
Your hair has more wave in the second picture than the first Crisdee. I wouldn't be too discouraged :)
The only good thing about my not quite shoulder hair is that its easy to see the length I've gained. It seems like if it were longer, I'd be doing what you're doing CrisDee... squinting at the pic really hard to see if theres actual growth. :)
I think there is growth, just hard to see, and like Kittylost said, there is a significant amount of wave in the second pic.
Sorry, being new here I have to ask what APL stands for?:o
Hi there, APL stands for Armpit length.
There's a list of abbreviations used here on LHC here http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/...e&articleid=10
Thanks I did go looking earlier on for a list of abbreviations but be blowed if I could find it.
Hi from Wales anyway :joy:
It feels like I have been stuck at SL forever. I thought I would make it to APL by spring, but with my slow growth and a couple of trims, I have 3 inches to go.
I am going to try not to trim for the rest of the year.
Don't despair CrisDee. I'm the same way. My hair looks about the same length in the back. The front layers, however, are a completely different story. They seem to have grown a lot. Generally though, this month my hair has definitely grown "outward" rather than "downward".
Will post my progress pics soon.
Yeah, I guess it's maybe a little longer - it's all squirreled out from having been put up wet in a cinnabun and left for the day, so it's a little hard to tell. I'll have to try wrapping it before bed to straighten it, and see if it looks a little longer - but thanks for the encouragement, everybody! :flower:
Here's my hair atm straightened:

Not too far away, but to get to APL in my natural state is the biggest challenge!

Not far to go:D
So I'm a few days late with my picture (the length shot I took was two months ago, and I'll probably continue with pictures every two months), but here it is!
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/...ctureid=104416
My hair is naturally layered from growing out a buzz cut, so the shortest pieces are still about an inch from shoulder, but the longest pieces are getting close to APL! :joy:
I'm taking my pictures with my hair wet for the time being, since at this length, it flips up on the bottom quite drastically. In another few months or so, it should lie down enough to start taking my pictures with dry hair. :)
Great growing everyone!! :D :cheer:
I'm still a couple of inches or so away from APL- slowly but surely.
Growin' out a bob. I had a short bob with bangs. I cut my hair after leaving home a few years ago and while it was a great thing to do, I miss my hair and I want to grow it out again. Probably not as long as I had it (at one point it was classic) but I want longer hair again. Probably APL, but maybe a little longer. BSL is a little longer, isn't it? I think that seems like a good place for my fine, fairly thin hair.
I'm going to grow out the bangs, too. Just in time to get it all pulled back out of the way of the baby that's joining our family in a month or so.
Sheesh. I haven't been to this section of the forum in AGES! What have I been doing!?
Here it is at its shortest point. This was at least six months ago, but I've had trims since then. I'll post a recent picture to compare when I get one taken :)

Wow! That's pretty brave of you to go from classic to a short little bob. Honestly though, the bob looks really adorable on you. Great look! You remind me of Katherine Zeta Jones in Chicago. I love short bobs on straight, fine hair.
Welcome back though and happy growing. I'm a fine, thinnie too and it's always inspirational to see others with thinnish hair able to grow so long :)
Great growing everyone:D
APL! Woo! I put a big post on the main page listed as Big Anniversary if anyone wants to check out the picture ^_^
Congratulations :)
This is the perfect thread for me! :) I am at shoulder/flip length right now and am working to get to apl. I'm in the same boat as many of you with the layers issue. My hair tends to look triangular if it's a blunt cut lol.
I'd love to join in on this thread! I've been in the shoulder-APL Bermuda Triangle for a long time now. Hoping to be to APL maybe by the the end of August. *fingers crossed*
Hiiii! Recently hit shoulder! Looking forward to APL, even though APL doesn't look great on me.
I looked back at my unintentional record of hair length to try to gauge my growth rate, and it seems I went from almost APL (youtube.com/watch?v=rcGyZb5By5I) to just-past BSL (youtube.com/watch?v=d9woG6pqMWo) in about a year and five months. Just now I got out some string to measure about how far APL is from BSL on me. It's a 10 inch difference. 10 inches in 17 months? Including a trim? That's great! How did I do that? maybe my measurements were off.
Anyway, I then used the string to determine the distance from shoulder to APL on me. I put the two lengths side-by-side and saw that the shorter one is about 2/3 of the longer one, so it should take me 2/3 of the time it took to get to BSL, so about one year. hmmm. Not bad. =) Now I have a time scheme for hitting my next landmark.
Thanks CrisDee! :D I always tend to forget that my hair grows pretty darn fast. Day to day it feels like it's growing slowly, but in actuality...by April of 2012, it should be between the bottom of BSL and waist-length, if not just barely brushing waist. And it should be just about TB by April 2013.
It just still feels so short!!!
Guys I am so impatient to get out of the SL to APL Bermuda Triangle! I had my boyfriend measure my hair last night and it was 22 inches and 3/4! He told me I need to just stop obsessing and wait. I had him measure it about a week and a bit ago and it was 22 and 1/2.
I think APL is about 24/25 inches for me roughly.
The problem is that it's only the middle bit of my hair that reaches 22 and 3/4, the rest is much shorter because of layers.
Anyone else here is verging on obsessive and measuring too often for their own mental sanity?
:crazyq::crazyq::crazyq:
I usually measure once a month or so. Sometimes a little more- just in case ;)
I measure every week on a Wednesday.
I keep every measurement in a spreadsheet.
Also with details of my hair, amount of damage, if I've colored it or anything.
Obsessive, me? Never.
Thanks that makes me feel much better! I'm impressed by your use of a spreadsheet :-)
I used to measure constantly! And it drove me insane, although I am impressed with your spreadsheet skills too! I've stopped measuring now as I was getting frustrated with it constantly changing so I just tend to measure at milestones. Or if I've just trimmed to check how much really came off ;)
Mine is threatening to take away my measuring tape! Hey it could be worse, I could be measuring the circumference of my thighs (that would be depressing).
I think it's difficult not to obsess when you're setting yourself goals, but with hair, part of it is out of your control, so it's really frustrating. I was hoping to grow 2 inches a month, as I usually grow maybe 1 to 1 1/2 a month, but with the redbush/extra care/new routine, I was really hoping to take it to the next level, and if I don't get these 2 inches in the end, I'll feel like I've let myself down somehow, or not stuck to my routine well enough.
Anyone else here also feels guilty if they don't grow enough? Or is it just psycho-ocd-perfectionnists like me? :o
I seem to measure every week as well, and also hubby thinks I'm mad:D But he doesn't mind as long as I'm happy:) I'm definitely getting more growth, average for me was upto 1/2 inch a month, but I think I'm getting more now:) Must be a combination of rooibos tea, vitamins and henna:cheese:
Ps. I don't think it's depressing to measure thighs weekly! I measure my hips and waist weekly... It helps me see my progress on my goal to lose a few pounds of fat and it really keeps me motivated and on track, more so than a scale would (building muscle at the same time).
A week is about enough time for me to see progress with those measurements.
Though I am to shoulder (I need to update my profile photo!), I am debating the idea of growing out some of my layering. However, I don't feel ready to make a decision about that yet, so I'm just going to let my hair grow wild till the end of summer and then decide about the layers when I do my next trim. :-) In the meantime, I am experimenting w/ no cones and no sulfates to see how my hair reacts.
Wow - sounds like you get WAY better than average growth to start with. Please don't beat yourself up over a growth rate you can't *really* control! I'd give a lot to get 1.5" per month!
I've gone from benign neglect to too much measuring and now am just trying to stay busy in other ways so I'll wake up one morning and go "Hey, look! It's longer!" I measure once a month and take a length shot once a month as well. More than that and I become obsessive!
Everyone is getting such great growth - woohoo! :cheer:
