Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Krissykitty: Welcome! i know exactly what you mean. In this stage, my hair never looks good unless i either style it or put it up in a bun.. But i think once the hair is only a couple of inches longer, like halfway between APL and shoulder that will change (at least for me). So hang in there! :)
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I tried to reply earlier but it didnt seem to work, so iŽll give it another go!
Krissykitty: I totally understand what you mean, i hate how my hair looks 99% of the time (except today, for some reason) when it is not styled or up in a bun. I think that with some extra length, maybe just a few inches, that problem will hopefully be gone! Hang in there!

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I am at collarbone now! I have so missed this thread, I started another at thebeautybottle.com which is the LHC's sister site in the cold dark times of LHC being down. I would say come play over there while LHC goes through it's growing pains but now I can't access it. Here's hoping that they both don't go down at the same time.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Reading this thread is getting me all psyched up! I just "officially" hit shoulder length, so my journey to APL and beyond begins!

Plus, I'm excited to no longer have a pixie and I want to show off and play with my new length!
Welcome, KrissyKitty :D I'm sure you won't be here too long considering how long your hair sounds already! I've been growing out a pixie too and we can both kinda relax knowing we're past the extra short lengths and we have hair to mess with :P Good luck with your growth!

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
It is so odd to me that my collarbone length hair is considered medium length. I have always thought of medium length as being BSL or midback.
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I just measured today and it seems my growth has slowed down a little too. I'm at 19.25" now. The good news is that it has reached that point where I actually WANT to wear it up because it's getting in the way (caught under bag straps, etc). I'm not a fan of twists- they're too formal or something, they just don't work on me, I need messiness- so the only thing I really do is a kind of tails-up-and-then down and secure with a France Luxe long skinny barette.
For those of you who use those lovely wooden hair toys (forks and squiggle sticks), how long was your hair before you could do a nice messy bun and secure it well? That's all I really want to wear in my hair but I don't think it will work until about 22", which means another five months at least!!

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Hey, like a lot of you I am back in this thread....I've been lingering/maintaining around this length for almost 2 years now because I needed to cut out all the bleach damaged AND the crooked layers. I've finally managed to get virgin hair that is all one length but its only a bit past my collarbone. This is going to be a tedious few months - I'm hoping for APL in around 9 months (by the end of the summer! crossing my fingers).
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Um question.....my hair does this annoying flippy thing(it only does that if my hair is shorter then bsl then goes pin strait at Bsl+) but when I pull it strait its a little past APL. So am I APL or does it not count since I have to pull it?

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I can finally do a couple of stick bun type things! I am using thin paint brushes but with two in it stays all day! I am at 16.75 inches which on me is collarbone.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I'm more of a lurker than a poster, but I'm so happy the boards are back up that I thought I'd chime in and say that I was pleasantly surprised to realize that I'm about an inch away from APL, I should be there after the first of the year! I've been doing some serious benign neglect for the past 6 months or so, it's nice to see progress. I ended up getting a very layered haircut about a year and a half ago and it's been a long road getting those layers grown and cut out and gaining some length back. I'm finally coming out of the shoulder to APL abyss and I hope to be heading into the APL-BSL abyss soon!

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Hi guys! wow finally it's back :happydance:
I'm almost there, 1" to go, but my growth has slowed significantly lately AND I've been finding a lot of splits :( I'm def going for a trim in the next few days so that'll set me back a nice half inch :justy: I hope that the cold season will help out like last year *le sigh* I'm crossing my fingers for APL on new years' but I'm having doubts. Oh well! I'll just have to hang around for a couple more months :D

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Thanks for the warm welcome! It is really nice being done with a pixie! I'm definitely a big fan of the bun lately. And the high ponytail. I can't wait for APL. Must. have. patience.
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Yay for being done with the pixie! It is so awesome to have hair again isn't it?
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I'm still trying to get to APL and it feels like it's taking forever, my hair just loves shoulder length :( I usually grow about an inch a month but the past three months I've only gotten half an inch per month, I'm really hoping the slow growth is only due to it being winter here and now that it's summer again, my hair will speed up to an inch a month (or more) again, patience is not one of my virtues haha :)

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I am allllmost there. So close. I was feeling down about my lack of progress, so I posted all my towel tests since I started doing them (May) in my blog. Made me feel tons better!
Is it bad when the boards were down I was put out that I couldn't post my November towel test? Yes, I'm weird.

The thin paintbrush thing is smart, because at this shorter length it's hard to cram a thicker stick in there and make it work out. Plus paintbrushes are cheap (well some are) so if you break one it's no big deal. I have some thinner aluminum forks that are wonderful that seem to work this way (they are by ravenslair on ESTY)

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Also, I bet if I straightened my hair or pulled the waves all the way down I would be at APL already, but if you can't just look at your normal hair in the mirror and can't see it there, then what's the point?

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I can finally use a hairstick! I am so excited! :D Now I can justify purchasing a boatload of hairtoys!!!

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
It's nice to have the forums back yay! I don't really have much progress to report as I'm experiencing my usual fall-winter stall (not technically stall, it is still growing, just at a slower rate).
I still really hate my hair at this length. It is funny that I didn't feel that way when I joined LHC at about the same length, but now that I've had a taste of almost-waist, I can't stand my hair. I think it is also because I have very stupid layers (which were necessary to remove damage) and I sort of feel like chopping off a couple inches to even it all out but I know if I do it I'll get even more frustrated at how short my hair is...
Hope you guys are feeling more positive than I am with your journey to APL! I have a feeling mine is going to be long and unpleasant...

That's how I feel a lot. My hair was about waist when I cut it, so after having known that, SL to APL just feels...inadequate or something. It's a weird feeling. Even though it's getting close to a year ago, I sometimes still half-expect my hair to be down to my waist when I'm doing something like washing it or putting it up. But...it's not...
Hmn...I'm probably about an inch and a half to two inches from APL, then I can go join the other thread. It's exciting to see how much my hair's grown this year!

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I am feeling more positive about my hair. I feel like I'm getting really vain about it, although it's nothing much, really. I think it's mostly my newfound curls and waves. After I wash it and it dries all wavy, I toss it around and look at it in the mirror. Lots. It's starting to look like princess hair. Very short princess hair, but princess hair nonetheless. I feel stupid saying that.

I know that feeling, but mostly because I have never had healthier, softer hair in my life. I almost cannot believe it when I feel it after I let it down after a day at work- "Is this really my hair?" lolol
I am so glad I cut my hair. I really am, because I have had so many benefits because of it- it may take a while to get to my goal, but when I get there, my hair will be the best it's ever been. :)

That sounds amazing! I would love to see pics! :D
I am also getting more comfortable with my hair, as it is getting longer and wavier every day now. I can even wear a hat nowadays without my hair flipping in every direction and looking stupid as it used to do just a couple of months back! :)

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I am trying to adjust my mind set. Modern standards put anyone at or around shoulder length as medium length. To me and probably most of you it falls under way to short but I think I will be less depressed if I adjust my brain to say this isn't short it is medium, BSL to waist will be long and every point I reach thereafter will be oh my stars long! Granted this is in part because I have only had just past BSL and my mom's terminal length is at 29 inches which on me would be flirting with waist. I dream of knee or longer but I also want to be able to accept that waist may just be as far as I go. I am tired of being depressed about my hair and my poor hair choices! Two or three years from now this length will be a bad memory. For now I declare myself a medium length lady!

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I hadn't been on here for ages because of all the problems, came on the other day and it seems like it's finally back! I still keep giving the odd micro trim on the very lengths but am just leaving the layers, which have actually grown a decent amount. It feels like it's getting to a decent length now, it's still at collar bone but because the layers are more grown out it feels longer.
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Glad the forum is back up, wee!
Well took some photos and measurements today and my hair at the front is 2.5 in below my collarbone now. It still looks so short from the back though? Im guessing another 2.5-3 in before I can declare APL. Going by current growth (and no haircuts) I should get there sometime in February. It is summer here so hopefully no growth stalls :-)

Oops need to change my signature :-p

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Just had a proper look at my hair, and the layers I have been hating so much have really seem to have grown more than I thought :D The shortest layers are at jaw/chin length, much better from being about 3 inches long when I started seriously growing. I think by the end of the year they'll finally look much less obvious and will blend much better, and I can finally think about letting the length grow out instead of maintaining at collar bone. woop!

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Hey all! More of a lurker here. It feels like forever I've been stuck between SL and APL! Soaking wet it's only a couple inches away from APL. I remember 10 months ago I was just below collar bone soaking wet. I will be here for a while though, I hope to maintain APL as my horrible uneven layers catch up!
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I'm jumping in. The back is at my shoulders, but the front isn't yet--grown out pixie with no trims.
It's been many years since my hair was long enough to put up, and it was heavily processed/damaged back then. My hair is new, and I'm trying to figure it out as I go.
How do you deal with slippery hair? How do you keep it from sliding out of your updos without making them tight? Maybe my hair is just too short and will behave better when there's more to work with? (My go-to style is an ear-to-ear lace braid. I have to braid damp and put a bobbypin in every couple of inches or it falls out. Same with a French/dutch braid back from my forehead. I've used a parandi once or twice, but it's still a little short for it.) help, please?
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Bobby pins, headbands, piggytails, half ups, aloe to help with hold, light oil while damp to help with braids. Those were my go to's for keeping my hair out of my way! Good luck and keep up the good work! A year from now this will all be a bad memory.
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Thanks, SerinaDaith! I'll try those things. Thanks for the encouragement. It already looks much better than it did in September. I need to update my siggy.
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
welcome, browneyedsusan ! When my hair was your length i used bobby pins, loads and loads of bobby pins.. And like SerinaDaith said, a year from now this will only be a bad memory! Good luck with the growing and welcome to this thread!

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I think I have reached collarbone-length! Is that even a length? :P
http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_me...bo5so1_500.jpg
What do you think? (My head is tilted backwards in the 2nd photo.. my tattoo is just right above the collarbone, so when I stretch my hair, it definitely ends underneath the collarbone.. does that count?)
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Yep you're definitely collarbone! Congrats! It's definitely a nice mini-milestone. Your colour looks even more amazing than usual on these photos, I like how rich the red looks!
I have something like 2-3 inches to go to get to APL. But my hair has been experiencing its usual winter slow growth which is no fun. I also feel too cold to be doing redbush sprays and too lazy to do oil massages. I've also been wearing my hair mostly down as nothing works on it at this stupid length.

I made it! :)

I'll take a picture of my hair not soaking wet, too, but I'd say I am now firmly at APL! Woohoo! This picture is also quite nice for seeing how far my next step is ^^
