Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
exciting!!!
I hope mine gets here soon!
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
My shedding hasn't relented :( I'm fairly certain I've lost a bit of my thickness by now, too.
I don't know what's going on.
I've started oiling my scalp a little after showering, and in the morning when I get up with dry hair, but I just don't know what else to do. I've been wearing my hair down, so it's not getting pulled out from a too tight updo. I just don't know.
This started around the time I mixed up a new batch of shampoo, with a different base shampoo. Tomorrow I'll mix up yet another batch, using the old base. Ugh.
One of the girls at work, who has hair a little longer than shoulder, just got waist length extensions. Even though I know it's fake, I have the worst hair envy! :p

Hm, I don't know if this is very helpful, but my advice would be to try to relax and focus on something different and nice (your new fork?? :D) for a bit.
As far as I can tell - unless there are health issues - it's fairly normal to go through phases of shedding. While it seems really dramatic while it's going on, a couple of months later it's all but forgotten. I'm very minimal in my product use and I'd carefully like to theorize that this has minimized shedding but I still keep going through periods when I think I must be going bald, when every time I touch my head I hold a fist full of hair. Amazingly I still have hair

Maybe your scalp doesn't like oil? I don't know if you're doing CO or sulfate-free 'poo or stretching washes, but some people's scalps don't like these. I have mild seborrheic dermatitis (SD), and my scalp requires shampoo with sulfates to be happy. I don't get increased shedding without sulfates, but I do get flaking and itchy red bumps. OTOH, my scalp likes oil. Anyway, I just bring it up because some people have sensitive scalps and shed more when their scalp gets touched by something it doesn't like, or doesn't get cleaned thoroughly enough, etc.
Good luck in finding the culprit! Sheds are frustrating, and sometimes the reason never becomes clear, but it will eventually let up. :flower:

I've been trying to. I've had the past two days off work, and I've just been relaxing and trying to destress, but I don't (physically) let go of stress very well. I know it's probably just a natural cycle thing, but it's driving me nuts!

It's always luuuuuuuuvvved oil before! I've always used sulfates, I'm too broke of a college student to find nicer stuff :p I think I'm going to do an ACV rinse within the next couple of days to see if maybe there's some build up contributing to this mess.
Maybe now that my hair is realizing that I'm starting to take care of it better, it's trying to trick me into getting some gentler shampoo :p

*big hugs* I went through huge shedding for about 5-6 years because of going on and off hormonal birth control and lost probably half my thickness. Luckily I had very thick hair so I didn't go bald. I know how horrible it feels to shed, so I'm sorry you're going through it. :(
Shedding can be caused by hormonal changes (birth control pills, postpartum, ovary conditions, etc), thyroid issues and anemia. I'd say that when you start to loose thickness it is time to go see a doctor and have those checked out.
But if you are healthy and just going through a shed that you want to stop there are some alternatives: Castor Oil, Black Tea, Neelibhringadi Ayurvedic Hair Oil. Neeli oil worked best for me personally. Other things are suppose to help like rooibos tea, biotin and monistat, but those are used primarily for faster hair growth and do not always work to diminish shedding as well.
I hope you manage to stop the shedding. :flower:

Thanks for the suggestions :toast: I'm going to be ordering the CV Ayurvedic Herbs shampoo bar and their neem bar in the next couple days, but until I get them I'll add some more neem to my oilings. :disgust: That is a smell I'm not looking forward to!
I've been on hormonal birth control for over 2 years now, I don't think that if it was screwing with my hair it would take this long for it to show up.
I have castor oil in my shampoo, but not very much... I've been thinking about trying neeli oil for a while, but I've never gotten around to buying any  Now's my chance to really test it, I suppose. I rinse nightly with rooibos tea, but it hasn't been helping the shedding much.
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I've always been a rather heavy shedder. My mom used to notice more hair in the bathroom when I was visiting. I'm using monistat and taking msm and my shedding is considerably less.
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
hmmmm, I should get back on the MSM. I haven't taken it in like 6 six years now. I can't remember if I noticed a difference or not. Worth trying once more!
What's the deal with the monistat? I've been afraid to ask....

Mostly it helps hair grow faster. Some have decreased shedding. It's my first month on it, but it seems to be working so far. I'll let you know in a week. There's a monster thread on it.
