Depends on what you mean by "sore"; is it just the hair follicles from being in the wrong direction; not washing enough?
I would definitely wash! For sure, don't stretch beyond such a point. Or, don't even let it get this far.
There is nothing wrong with washing frequently.

I have this problem when my hair gets oily too. I am not sure why it happens, I guess because of the weight of the oil on the roots? It usually has to be about 5 or 6 days since I last washed for this to happen. Do you use a sulfate shampoo? You could try using a non sulfate shampoo which would strip out less oil and over time, your scalp would produce less oil. That is what I did, and it has been helpful. You could still wash every day, just with a gentler shampoo.
Of course if you are already washing with sulfate free then I am not sure what else you could try. Maybe using a co wash?

I've heard scalp-only washes are a godsend, if you can get your hair out of the way. It is a lot harder for shorter lengths though. You could also compromise by applying either oil or conditioner to the length of your hair (ears down) before washing so that you can get your scalp nice and clean and not worry about drying out the rest of your hair. I'm not an expert on oily scalp because I have the opposite problem, but it does sound like it could be medical if it's causing discomfort.

What is the best & gentlest way to do a sock bun? My longest layers are APL & shortest are just below chin so a sock bun is a great way to look like I have more hair. I have the bun donut which I covered with a pair of skin coloured tights as I’ve heard that’s how to stop hair being damaged by the bun donut. I put my hair into a ponytail (any suggestions for a non-damaging elastic please?) which I have to do quite tight or the bun looks lose against my head, then I put the end of the ponytail through the donut, sort of split it into 2 so that 1 half of my hair rolls round 1 part of the donut & the other half round the other bit. Then I roll the donut closer & closer towards my scalp, wrapping the hair from my ponytail over the donut as I move closer to my head. The trouble is it feels really damaging & I kind of have to force the hair to stay round the band & keep moving it round to check the donut is totally covered. I’m worried it’s really bad for my hair & wondered if I’m just doing it completely wrong? Any sheesyions welcome please. I don’t do it that much as I’m trying to avoid ponytails but this style looks really good.

Still cannot stretch it to once a week, no matter what I try.
Hi Aeonian! I noticed the same thing at first (oilier roots and drier ends). However, I wore it up so much, it really didn’t bother me. It has evened out more now though I still get oily roots by day 3 if I don’t wash them.

If you need to wash your hair every day, there's nothing wrong with that. If your scalp is oily, it's best for its health to wash. Of course, if you get no symptoms like itching or shedding, then not washing is fine, too. Me, I wash anywhere from every other day to a week, depending on where I need to be and if I can bother.
That makes sense. I anticipate that I will probably need to shampoo more during the summer as my hair gets oily when the humidity hits.

I agree about the sulfate free shampoo. I had a similar problem with a sore, tender scalp. Once I started using sulfate free shampoo and co-wash, my scalp felt better. It did take a about 2 months for my scalp to normalize. Of course, ymmv.

Unfortunately I don't have any real advice for the sock bun dilemma, but about elastics: I use invisibobbles/phone cord ties mostly. They might not fit very well under a bun thought so I would try those smooth, flat silicone hair ties :) I brush my hair and apply some product before putting the elastic. I have these https://cdn.dermosil.io/pr/products/...fault/3435.png

With my sock buns, I pull the ponytail through the donut and then sort of wrap it around/tuck it underneath as opposed to trying to roll it down the ponytail.
If you wanted to create a bun in that way, have you tried one of these? - I haven't tried them but I'm thinking of getting one, it seems a gentler way of tucking in your ends and rolling down?
Has any one else ever used these?
