Ha! Agreed, Alibran, within a couple months I changed my target goal to terminal - I will always crave additional length.
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I'm joining this thread! Currently just hit shoulder length and about 3 cm or more or less 1 inch away from my hair getting past the collarbone. First goal after this is ofcourse APL! I'm also not trimming anymore for 6 months to really get some length. My hair is 18.1" now and APL is around 23.6".
Happy growing to everyone!!

Welcome. What length are you at right now? I've been growing out a very short pixie since early 2016, and I'm starting to find I can do things with my hair - finally - at this length.

A lot of my hair fell out of excessive bleaching and I think the last couple of inches of my hair are still that bleach . I don't know how to look after my ends and I didn't know there was much I could do at this length. I've stopped all heat tools and only washing once maybe twice a week . I also only finger comb now. I wasn't sure what else I could do for my hair . It's never grown oddly before but I've never had hair this short either so maybe it wasn't so noticeable at longer lengths .
It feels like it takes forever to grow at this length . I'm excited to be able to do a braid one day. It's funny though I had waist length hair for years and years never had any interest in styling my hair or caring for it and now I can only dream of that hair again so I can learn a French braid and maybe more complex styles.
Thankfully some good has come from this I know to care for and advise my daughters and I have pics to show them what happened to my hair from bleaching hopefully they won't do the same . I'm trying to help them to have healthy hair too.
I seems like you're starting to take care of it, which is good.
I can't do anything much to protect my ends at this length either. I can do French/Dutch braids, but I can't get the ends tucked in.

I've set myself a provisional goal of TBL because that's the longest I got to before, but with the thought that I can stop before I get there if I decide it's long enough. My hair was really heavy and difficult to manage at TBL, but I'm keeping it layered this time, which should be easier. I'm already starting to think ... well, actually, maybe I'll go for classic this time, just because 'classic'.

Right now that lack of inch means I can only do like 3 things and have them stay all day: a ponytail, double ponytail buns (where you don't pull the pony through the last loop of elastic all the way), and double french/dutch braids. Even a single ponytail bun slips out!! A cinnabun like my avatar explodes into a ponytail after a few hours as well, and I don't have the length for an english braid. An inch! That'd keep the cinnabun in a couple hours more, and the single ponytail bun in for maybe twice as long as it does now. And I'd get a smidge more for an english braid and that might be more worth it to do. I think my thickness doesn't help me, though.
I'm creeping up on a iii (I'm at 3.5"), so I do still have some of the "thick hair problems" (difficulty getting shampoo everywhere on the scalp, hairstyles need more length before they're possible), but I also don't have them all which is good I suppose. I'll still need less length than a true iii would to do things, but more than someone with finer or less hair.
Mine is 5.5" and it is a bit of a nightmare. My problem last time was that I was constantly in that 'need more length' situation. Then, when I got more length, it was so heavy that it just gave me headaches and/or broke toys.
Yesterday, I did a bit of an experiment with 3 French braids going into one, which worked quite well, although it was a bit messy in places, and it killed my arms! I did take some photos, but none of them came out very clearly. I'm going to try it again at some point, with Dutch braids, which I think will be clearer because of the way they sit 'on top of' the hair. Then I took it out in the afternoon because I'd done it uncomfortably tight, and put it in two French braids, joined together at the back of my neck. I discovered I could put the elastic right at the back of my neck, and just pull the ends part through like a pony tail bun. There's a dip just above/between where the braids meet at the back of my head that will be a perfect place to put a bun when my hair gets a bit longer. The hair will sit there nicely, supported by the two braids, and I can put hairsticks through the braids to secure it. I also want to experiment with a 'diagonal' French braid, starting behind my temple on one side, and curving round to behind the other ear. I might need a bit more length to do that, though. It's amazing what you can do in terms of French/Dutch braids, even with very little length.
Last time, I could do a cinnabun at APL just by grabbing the hair, twisting it, and putting crossed hairsticks through it. When it got a bit longer, I needed elastics, hairsticks and pins, and it still fell out!
I discovered yesterday that my hair is well past shoulder when it's wet, so I pulled a bit down to measure - it still curls up, even when it's wet - and it's 1.5" past CBL when it's straight. I hadn't realised that. In its natural state, even calling it shoulder is being a bit generous!
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Just dropping in to say hi! I don't know if I want my hair much longer, but I've made the commitment to grow my hair until the first day of autumn at least, then I'll reevaluate. I might want to grow to APL, maybe even BSL. I ended up feeling like extra-long hair (waist and beyond; I was once at classic length) was a lot like a not-very-useful extra limb. With rare exception, no matter what I did with it, I could feel the weight of it, and it was uncomfortable.
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Such lovely heads of hair! Don't mind me; I am just here for the pictures...

Thank you! It's really choppy though, I've cut out bleached and damaged parts myself which resulted in me having one big chunky layer on top of my hair.. Not a good look ;) But it will grow :)

You can baby them, with oils and deep conditioning, to try to keep them from breaking off. That's about all I know to do, but there's a thread for growing out bleach/dye you could check out!

I used to wish for thicker hair until my old roommate was living with me (aka my best friend with WL hair). I won't know until next weekend, but I think her pony is at least 4", and she's always struggled! Lots of things she can't do without more length because of the thickness, it's heavy and hot, takes a billion years to dry, etc. Plus her hair is super fine, which makes it tangle even more. Whew! I'm much more appreciative of my own hair now.
And on here, wreckingbelle has suuuuuuuper thick hair and opted for a very drastic undercut in order to keep growing for ages. It looks amazing. And her hair is so thick that if it's down you literally can't even tell that she has the undercut!

Welcome, spidermom!!
I'm hoping that I find my own sweet spot where I can do the things I want to do with my hair, without it being "too much" or "too little". APL is a really nice length, though! A general "long" length, but it's still easily worn loose and such. But I've also really liked it much shorter, too! Can't go wrong when you're happy with it, really.
