Here is my length photo. It’s bad quality, but I can’t seem to get a better one at the house I’m at for now. I think I’m just brushing APL, but I might stay here until I figure out if I’m going to trim the ends or not. They feel really rough, but I’m not seeing any splits or damage, so I’m not really sure what it needs right now...

Your hair looks great! And yes, it looks like your longest parts are right there. That's a difficult part about the ends, it could be some sort of damage from a longer time ago (I find for my hair, not all damage shows as a split or a white dot, but can be hair that is rough and becomes a different texture, and that's normally heat damage or chemical damage). If they aren't breaking off or any thing, I'd just go for your current length goal and get past it before getting a trim.
And of course, if you haven't already tried clarifying, give that a go? Sometimes it helps. :)

My ends were feeling rough so I put a load of avocado oil on for a couple of hours, then some conditioner on top before I washed it, and now they feel lovely. If they’re not split I think you can probably baby them. Your hair is very pretty :)
blackgothicdoll I know just what you mean! My hair hasn’t been past APL before either so new territory will be fun :)
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Question for BerrySara, how do you go about getting trims? Do you straighten your hair to get a trim, or do you just trim yourself, and if so how do you do it? thanks :)

So...Besides chopping off my straight ends myself two years ago, I have only trimmed my hair twice since then, and I haven't straightened my hair since before I started growing out my natural texture. I personally think cutting curly or kinky hair while straight can be very tricky and unpredictable because our hair can shrink so much and not always evenly.
In between my two trims, I have done plenty search and destroy any time with fairy knots or just ends that are highly tapered (I don't really have any splits). The two cuts I did was on dry curly hair and I followed the linked video (its not the most detailed). But I did end up with layers shorter on top than I wanted.
I really don't plan on getting my hair trimmed by anyone so its been a bit of trial and error. I was very intrigued by a Deva Cut for a while but they all seem to cut a ton of short layers and with my goal of growing my hair long, I do want to limit my layers to just long layers. When I get to APL un-stretched, I plan on micro trimming for a while on my longest layers only, to even it all out a bit.
I plan on doing some research and learning about other self trimming methods like Feye's. But I have also read on here about putting hair in a pony tail right under the chin and just stretching the hair out and taking off the very ends as a trimming method (subtle U Shape hemline). Either way, I am going with baby steps!
How about you? Do you get your hair trimmed? Have you tried a Deva Cut before?

Thanks for the response! I'll check out the video. The last time I got a trim was in September, and I straightened my hair before hand and went to the salon. She did not think my hair was straight enough, and proceeded to fry it - again, one of those situations where I just sat there and took it, but it was clear what was happening the entire salon smelt like burnt hair. I don't even know how much she cut because she immediately curled the hair after. So I have zero plan of getting a trim at the salon anymore. :( The only other way I've self trimmed is on straight hair, putting it into a pony tail straight up and snipping scraggly ends just a little bit. Otherwise I haven't figured anything out.
I contemplated a deva cut for a long, long time but looking at videos it didn't appeal to me as someone who stretches my hair in some way or another, buns or braid outs. So I didn't really like how the cuts turned out as tapered and super full, it also doesn't fit with my desire to simply grow out my hair and not have to deal with layers (I have short ones in the front from trimming out damage and having bangs).
So, lately I just S&D, more fairy knots than splits and my hair seems fine with that. I do experience little short broken hairs, eyelash length, and before I started this journey that was usually my signal to trim, but I've been holding out to decide the best way to go about it. I figure I'll have breakage until I grow out all of my dyed hair, which is from the top of the ears down.
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Lady Stardust and blackgothicdoll, thanks for the advice! I just recently bought a chelating rinse and some leave-in conditioners, so hopefully at least one of those will help! Where I'm staying now has a lot harder water than I'm used to, so that might be the problem. I think I'll keep babying them, I don't really want to lose any length until its long enough to start doing buns with hair sticks again.
Also, you guys are brave with the self trimming, haha. I've read a lot about it, but I'm nervous to do anything other than S&D on my own straight hair, I can't even imagine trying it on curly hair!

Hard water makes a big difference, I’m sure your ends will feel better when you’ve used the chelating shampoo :)
I’m not brave enough to self trim either! I might try when I reach a stage where I’m happy to maintain, that way I won’t worry so much if I lose some length in evening up :)

Cute kid logic :D :D "oh it's not an actual cut, just a "tasaus"...? Alright then!"

Your hairdresser sounds awesome and you are definitely right. “The bare minimum” could mean a different thing to my hairdresser than to me. Usually she does show me how much she is going to cut, also using mirrors so I see the back too. I'll be going to be very clear about growing my hair long again and not wanting to lose much.
Beautiful hair photos everyone, looking good! :blossom: :blossom:
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
You hair looks great LadyAdelina and blackgothicdoll, you've had some amazing progress!
I've never cut my own hair either, my cousin has cut my hair for years and thankfully she fully understands "bare minimum" and will straight up tell me if it's not worth trimming yet! I'm grateful for that. I'm trying to only get trims every 6 months - the longest I've ever gone is 5. I considered just not cutting until I at least got past APL, but I don't think my bleached ends can take it.
I'm thinking that at longer lengths I might try self-trimming, when I'm not so obsessed with gaining length. Am I the only one who thinks it seems way too dangerous at shorter lengths? One slip and you lose so much progress!

Yikes that's frustrating that she further added heat. Glad you don't have to go back there - that just seemed so unnecessary.
I hear ya on the deva cut. Similar reason why I haven't gotten one.
Honestly what I picked up from LHC is that as long as you baby your hair and keep it healthy and moisturized, really don't have to trim very often if the goal is to grow long hair. Some have not trimmed for years. And even those with damaged ends who have long hair, have been slowly cutting out the ends over a long period of time - sometimes years! Multiple members have said that those ends with damage will hold on for quite some time and can stay put. Outside of this community there is a lot talk about well you cant grow long hair with unhealthy ends but that doesn't seem to be the consensus here...and a lot of these members have much longer than WL hair!!
So I personally think the key is to nurture hair and just stop any further damage to hair like dye, heat, mechanical damage etc and just stick to S&D and perhaps occasional micro trims until you get to some length that feels long enough where you can perhaps maintain for a while to get rid of those last bits of unhealthy ends.
That's personally what I plan on doing. Get to a decent length and start micro trimming to even out my layers. I don't even plan on maintaining there, I plan on micro trimming at a rate of (approx.) 0.5"/2 months while my growth is 1"/2month. Still going to move forward with growth at just half the rate.
