You can wrap a towel around your body and tuck it up to your armpits and see if your hair reaches the towel.

I tend to clip it up in a peacock twist. Since I have layers though, I have to make a half up first, then make my peacock twist. It might not be the most protective to the ends as compared to the traditional bun, but it sure beats rubbing on shirt collars.
I did a towel test just for lulz, and I'm actually a lot closer than I thought! Good progress! I think I should update my measurements as well, it has deffinately grown since last time!
