Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Okay, posting my waves before I change my mind
By the time I got home and survived a dash of rain, the backside looked a bit messier already... :(

Lovely waves, Katleen. You seem to be more than just 2a. :) :flower:

Your waves are gorgeous, Katleen!
I didn't really do anything for treatment tuesday :( I did give myself a facial in the shower though!

Ahhh Katleen, I want my waves to come out like that!!! Do you mind sharing what your "few more tricks" were? My underlayers look like that but on top my canopy is a lot straighter. This is also one reason why I like my layers because that way at least some of the more pronounced waves have a chance of "peeking out" :D

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Piratejenny, I've started co-washing again, and today I put a bit of my regular conditioner instead of my leave-in in dripping wet hair while scrunching most of the water out. Then I put a whole lot of gel (more than I used to) in my scrunched-dry hair. I really put gel in it until it started clumping. Then plopping for about half an hour while getting dressed/doing make up and so. And for me the biggest trick: absolutely no touching my hair as long as it's not completely dry...
It didn't really frizz until this afternoon :-)
Hopefully the warmer weather will help as well, because wearing a big fat coat (it's still awfully cold and wet here), ruins my waves...
Something else I realised: my hair likes olive oil better than coconut oil. Bummer, because I find it makes my hair smell like salad dressing instead of the much more exotic coconut...

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Hello everybody:o Just introducing myself.
So, i guess i belong here. I'm currently growing my hair out from a bob, and really looking forward to having my long hair back.

So, this is the hair.

Maybe someone can help me out here. Which type would you say, my hair is? I'm a little confused about that:confused:
Well, i'm really happy to have found a place to discuss my (lack of) hair. It's getting a little frustrating waiting for the hair to grow back.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Katleen, your waves!! :thud:
And you guys know what? I've been so messed up with the long Easter weekend that I thought today was Tuesday (even though it's Wednesday :p ), so I am currently doing my conditioning treatment :D

Hi Maiken! :) Welcome to the APL thread, and LHC! :D
It's hard to type hair if you've done anything to it (brushed, been wearing up, blow dried), and it's best to type hair that has been washed and air-dried with no products or anything..
But to hazard a guess, from the way it looks now, I'd say 1B. Is the under layer more wavy/wurly? :)

Thanks for giving up your secrets :flowers:...
...unfortunately this will not work for me at this point in my life :(. I'm on this trip trying to go as natural as possible and other than clay I really only use stuff on my hair that comes out of my fridge :D :D. I also need a routine that doesn't take more than 10 minutes max in the morning as I am a working mom and if there is one thing I don't have it's time in the mornings. I'm curious about the plopping, though. Might have to try this on a weekend... To work I don't really wear my hair down anyway. Much easier to hide slight greasies in a messy pinned up thing I like to think of as a "bun" :D

I'll try to get af pick one day, where i haven't done anything to it. In these pics i've been wearing it in a messy bun and brushed it,
There is no layers. The shorter hair in front is bangs growing out:)
I really have a hard time figuring out my hair - one day it's almost completely straight. Then i wash it and sometimes it gets kind of wavy, but always turns straight again. But i'm really not doing anything to straighten it..

Well, we'll see what it turns out to be ;)
I didn't mean those kind of layers ;) I meant the underneath part of your hair..there's the part on top (the canopy), and then the underneath part...like by the nape of your neck. Is that straight too? Or wavier?

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I got my hairsticks today! I'm so excited, I've been playing with them for hours.
Sadly, my hair is still too short to make them stay, so it'll be at least another month or two until I can actually use them :(

Thanks:D
Well, two years ago i had almost waistlength hair. And then i decided chopping it all of in favor of a chinlength bob. I had never had hair any shorter than APL so i was curious about what that would be like. I maintaned that cut for about a year, and has been trying to grow my old hair back for a year or so. So rigth now i feel like im lacking hair. But thanks for the compliment!

Ah..
English isn't my first language, so i didn't know, it could mean that too. Learning new stuff every day;)
I think it's a bit wavier at my nape, where the front parts are completely straight.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
A bit of a belated length-picture thursday :P i've been very busy, but here it is:
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/...ctureid=130631
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/...ctureid=130629
I feel like it could use a trim, but i'm not sure if i want to go to the salon just yet, i already had a trim right before christmas... the point is that there are quite a few splits in my layers, which i'm unable to cut myself right now. Oh well, i guess i'll just keep putting it up (i've been wearing it down a lot though, i had a couple of VERY good hair days and i just wanted to enjoy them :D)

I second the request for pictures!
In general I'd love to see some more toys you guys are using at this point. As I stated a few days ago, I just discovered that a fork will stay in my hair but other than that I'm just mostly using a clip that looks like this http://www.fancypocket.sg/images/P/850277P.jpg
I'd love to get some inspiration!

English isn't my first language either ;) But you'll often see references to the canopy and underlayers here on LHC, so it's a good thing to know :)
Where are you from? :)

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
New member here. :) I'll be joining in on this thread. I'm estimating that I'll be APL in about two months so I'll be here until then.
I started CO-washing last week and my hair has gotten soooo shiny and soft including my completely fried ends that used to be heat styled every day, bleached four times and dyed 10+ times. I hope it stays this way so I won't have to trim them off because I'm so desperate to reach APL, haha.

Hello and welcome!!!
OMG YOU GUYSSSSSSS!!!!!!!! I just managed to put my hair up, in a bun, with my new sticks, and it STAYED. It stayed. It was so awesome! I tried to get a picture, but I couldn't. ...and then I took it out to try to figure out what I'd done, and now I can't do it again

One thing to pay attention to is how high on your head you are starting from. I can do a lazy wrap or pencil bun from the middle of my head, but not quite if I try it lower down. My hair is just barely long enough.

Great Bunnysaur!!! I think it might also depend on your hairsticks, whether they're staying or not. I have a very old one, which used to be part of a "figure 8" but a rectangular one I had 20 years ago ( still found the stick lying around somewhere at my mom's house), and it's great!! Very long and very sturdy, just what I need for my mass of hair. Other sticks seem to be to short, or maybe it's just me who doesn't know how to use it properly :D
Piratejenny, I think the trick is more in the moisturizing and the plopping than anything else. Natural ingredients can be just as moisturizing. Only the gel-part, I wouldn't know what to subsitute that with... And I completely understand the morning-rush thing! I'm a working mom with 3 small children, I need to get up at 5 in the morning if I need to wash my hair  It's actually less time-consuming now to co-wash, scrunch and plop, than before with the washing/conditioning/blowfrying/fighting frizz/starting all over again and straightening it :)
I've heard it gets better once the children get older, let's just believe that
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Bunnysaur, these sticks are gorgeous!! They look pretty thick and I wonder if that would make them stay better. I've been playing around with regular chopsticks (meant for eating) trying to see whether it's worth getting proper hair sticks and so far I have not managed to get anything to stay :(. They are rather thin, though...
Katleen, yeah, I keep telling myself that it will continuously be getting better in the mornings as the kids get older (mine are 5 and 3). It's so weird, on weekends, when we could all sleep, they are up and ready to go at 6am and on school/work days it's like pulling around bags of wet laundry....
No way I could get up at 5am for my hair!!! I've finally given up even trying to wash it in the morning (one big reason why I'm trying to stretch washes actually) and I generally just put it up and forget about it for the day. I found that using dry shampoo helps a lot in making it look presentable enough to venture out (yeah, I admit, not exactly natural, but I really only use it as last resort anyway )
I think I'll definitely try the plopping this weekend. I'll give it a shot without gel and just see what happens. My hair also does not like being touched while drying by the way. For some reason that makes it look stringy...

Ha! Good tip, ravenheather! Off to experiment now :)
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I've tried all sorts of different places on my head and I can't do it again :( Oh well, I'll just keep trying.
They are pretty thick, and they're not too slippy, so it's probably just my silly hair. Oh well.
Also, piratejenny, what is this "plopping" of which you speak?
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
So, after my shower I did a towel test, and determined that when my hair is soaking wet and pulled straight, it brushes my towel! I won't consider myself solidly APL for another 2"-3", due to springy hair and layers, but I'm finally in "can I call this APL?" territory. Woohoo! I guess that's been 6 or 7 months since I hit SL, with a trim in February that took off about an inch.
Bunnysaur, here's an example of "plopping": http://www.naturallycurly.com/curlre...or-not-to-plop
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
That's the best explanation of plopping I have seen anywhere. I'm by no means an expert on plopping by the way, in fact I have never done it. Actually I never considered myself "curly" by any means, it wasn't until I stopped with my almost daily S/C routine that I discovered all kinds of weird curl action going on on my underlayers (I have a photo in my album). My canopy is still pretty straight but it's also quite a bit shorter. Just curious what would happen...
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I did it again, and I managed to get a picture this time! :cheese:
Sadly it's having a hard time getting from my phone to my computer  so I'll be posting a pic later.

Do I consider myself shoulder-length if the mullety longest layer is shoulder but the rest is a mess of layers?

I certainly did :D. Only very few months ago I would have described my hair exactly that way: a mullet with a mop of layers on top. Then one day someone took a picture and magically both mop and mullet had dissolved into a layered "style" that I kind of like :).
Do post pictures! Pictures are always good
