Once the flicking calms down the length seems to take off! I remember a stage where I was just gaining more flick and no length.

I made an impulse purchase today ... Goody Bun Spiral ... I really like it!
Here's what I came up with trying to secure a french twist with it ...

What do you think? The visible metal bothers me a tiny bit... but not as much as visible claw clips. I like how flat this bun turned out.
PS. Crisdee and Luluj, wow, look at how long you both have gotten!! :) Congrats!
Jaine, I like your new hairtoy! Nice!
Okay, for everyone else, I have a question. I've been reading through the no cutting threads and wondering, is anyone here considering the no cutting route?
I'm not sure I'd go for that right away. I do know I need at least one more trim to get rid of the most fried ends. But after that, should I try for no cutting, at least for a while? The rest of my hair does seem pretty healthy, and I have traditionally not had too many problems with badly split ends. If I take really good care of my ends, I *may* be able to get away with no cutting for a while.
What do you guys think about this? After all, we're still all "shortish" and still have a lot of length to gain...
I am not planning to trim at all this year ... my last haircut was at shoulder length last December to shape up the pixie layers. I don't have splits yet and I don't do anything damaging to it, and the shape still works, and I want my ends to become more wispy rather than more blunt, so there's no reason for me to trim just yet!
I haven't cut since Feb. 2009. My hair is healthy so far. If it absolutely needs a trim, I will, but I'm trying not to for as long as possible. I'm routinely in the no trim camp, though. I used to go one or two years between haircuts as my general standard. It works well for me but I don't get split ends hardly at all.
jaine, I just realized how much your hair had grown since the last time I saw a picture of it. Congrats!
I wouldn't have expected the spiral to work that well.
Jaine, awesome hair toy ^_^ I like how your bun looks. I think I might have to invest in one now ^_^
jaine, I like that new style! The ends are safely tucked away :flower:
alyanna, count me in as another doing the no trims during 2011 challange. Yeah, I started a bit late. But, I'm still keen to see what happens with no trimming for that long. It really seems to work for so many people!
Oooooh, Luluj, look at your hair! :joy: :cheer: :happydance: YOU've come a very long way since pixie! :)
Jaine, I was just looking at that Goody bun thingie, didn't pick one up cos I'm pretty hopeless with that kind of toy. I also like how nice and flat the updo turned out. :flower: And I got a big kick out of your "lovely assistant" in the video!
And I'm also doing the no-cutting thing, more as benign neglect than a challenge. I'm not one that enjoys going to a salon, so it's really no challenge for me at all.
Jaine - I'm with CrisDee - love the new updo - and the assistant can't be beat. :)
I'm also on the no trims bandwagon. That's usually how I grow anyway. Hopefully it will be quick this time! I just added in some extra biotin, which I've never taken before (other than what was part of my regular multi) so maybe that will give me a little growth spurt here as well!
I get my last trim at the end of this month to get rid of damage and then I'm also jumping on the no trimming wagon with Maddy as my inspiration for her amazing growth. I usually only get a haircut twice a year but used to lose a bit because of splits but this year I've given up heat styling so I think it will really make a difference.
I had the "flicking up and out" problem from Jan-Jun 2010. I kept flatironing the ends and trimming it. Finally I just accepted that I was going to have to live with the bottom of my hair going every which way, and I stopped heat-styling and trimming in Jun 2010 when it was just brushing my shoulders. It was awful at first, but I survived. Now my hair is getting close to APL and looks so much better! Almost one year since I had it trimmed, and no plans to trim ever! I like a rough hemline better than blunt, and I don't really get splits, so it works for me.
Well you guys really got me thinking. See before, whenever I would gain a lot of length it was always a result of benign neglect. So maybe I should just do that. Would also mean avoiding problems with my dear hairstylist who sometimes likes to make executive decisions...
AND, if the ends end-up looking nasty, I could always just change my mind and cut a bit off, right? Nothing to lose as long as I'm diligent about keeping an eye on the splits so they don't travel all up my head. PLUS, it's not like I have any intention of getting rid of all the highlights cuz that would mean cutting my hair above the ears.
So now part II of my question, and this may seem ridiculous, but the other night I was examining my ends, and I realized I do not know the difference between damaged ends, dry ends and frizzy ends. I can spot a couple of splits, where the hair is literally split into two, and that MUST be cut, but how do I do a proper "search and destroy"??? What about ends that have a tiny little white dot at the end. Do those need to go?
I just have no idea how to target the damaged ends and subsequently trim them off. How do you do an S&D to the back of your head? Any links to threads dealing with such issues?
I might be joining this no trims club for sure, especially since I recently got a decent blunt trim (beginning of April).
Hi! :waving: I'm back after taking a long break from LHC! I'm securely at shoulder (my hair's curling more and I had a trim/cut in Feb.). I have been pinning it up in messy 'do's. I'm excited to read through the last 60 or 70 pages and catch up! Everyone's hair is growing nicely!
I'm back on the "no trimming" bandwagon, and I'm back to being more curl-friendly to my hair, i.e. co-washing and using natural products without 'cones. I did do a bunch of heat-styling while away. :( Well, "a bunch" for me, which isn't much at all! I will post new pictures soon!!
I'm a bit quiet (sicky), but wanted to say everyone's hair look so good!!
alyanna here is a diagram to help illustrate the difference between a normal straight hair and one that is damaged.

I also take the hairs with a dot on the end because its starting to fray/split. Here is one of my white dots under a microscope. Its not a healthy end.

Thanks! And why, sure! I was running late to work this morning, so it ended up a bit wonky, but I'm in research, so I doubt anyone will care, lol.

Okay, here is my seven month check in!

And a back shot...I was obviously sitting crooked or my back really is that messed up (I have been having horrible back problems lately!):

Thank you SOOOO much. It really doesn't get any more helpful than that! Where did you find this funky image?
Well, I'm not sure I'm quite ready to jump on the no cutting bandwagon just yet. I think I do need at least one more good trim to get rid of the worst of the damage.
Plus, my hair is not long enough to do Feye's self-trimming. I would have a hard time. I am REALLY worried about going to a hair salon though. I *am* planning on spacing out my trims quite a bit. I had my last micro-trim beginning of April. I figure I won't trim again before July. If my hair is still in decent condition, I might push it until end of August (and beach season), but I honestly don't think I'll make it that far.
epigrrl that tuck looks great! I can't wait until mine will stay in one - hooray for you! :D
bondeandeebowl Your hair looks great! That's fantastic growth on you! (love the waterfall btw - very nice!)
Yesterday was a good score day for the hair here. Picked up a super-cheap bottle of EO lavender and aloe shampoo, and MIL bought me a set of Caruso rollers for my birthday. Woo-hoo! (And I scored a new pair of sandals at a steal - hurrah for good birthday finds!):cheese:
Wow, bondeandeebowl, that's a LOT of growth for just 7 months! :cheer:
Hello ladies and gentlemen(?) I'm finally belonging to this thread! Let's grow together!
I think I'm due for a dusting. I've tried not to, but I've just been in umpteen different climates (and two long stays in DRY hotels) and I think I'll end up worse off if I don't do it soon. I'm going to try to go to the one salon I love but I don't know if I can. The stylist really listened to me last time and only dusted my ends. Plus he was super interested in my henna and loved my color :D
In other news, I'm creeping closer and closer to APL. I'm pretty much there in the front, but not the back.
Thanks! I am thinking in three inches I will be super happy! When I pull down on my "bangs" they are a little over two inches away from my collarbone. Once they hit that point, I don't think I will be able to contain myself from doing some of this :cheese:
Here's to hoping we all get a little bit of a summer growth spurt!
I reached APL!!!!! Although I'm getting a micro trim tomorrow :(
Thanks :) I won't let it get me down. Off with the splits and on to BSL :)
Congrats on hitting the milestone Caiti! :blossom:
I realized about two days ago that I'm at the "can I call this APL" state :D At last! But I think I'll still wait for few weeks or so until I can safely say I'm at APL. :)
Hello everyone! I've been posting in the Super Shorties thread, but I suppose I should really be posting here! I'm a bit over a year from my last buzzcut, and my longest layers are between shoulder and APL. The shortest are about two inches from shoulder.
My biggest annoyance right now is that the back layers are flipping up, making it look quite a bit shorter. It's finally starting to calm down some lately, but it still does this, except for in the very back, where about a 2-3 inch section lays fairly straight, haha!
My hair is too thick to do much with it, but I can get almost all of it into a single pony (a few strands come loose after time), pigtails, and half-ups. I can probably do a sockbun, I'll have to give it a try sometime!
From what I can tell, I'm pretty close to reaching APL with my longest layers (somewhere between 4-6 inches, probably). I just measured my hair, and came up with 19.5 inches. :D
hey peeps!
so the good news is that my hair is sitting more nicely down my upper back! yep! im at UBL now!! yippee :D
unfortunetly the bad news is that i need another trim :(
Congrats caiti42! I did have a pang of envy though. :flower:
annieangel149, can you get away with a dusting or perhaps just a cm off. Its amazing how just a cm can make such a difference.
Hi KajiKodomo, that flip will pass before you know it.
Alyanna, LOL. So silly! Love it :cheese:
Doesn't it feel awesome to be so close? I am envious! Yay for patience!
Oh my gosh, the flicking. Yes, much hated facet of this length! Mine has literally stopped doing that as much in the last couple days, I think I may be done with it for good soon, crossing my fingers!
Had me laughing! Four stripes is awesome, and seriously, awesome growth rate! Too cute :D Congrats!
CONGRATS LULU! :cheese:
Jaine, NICE use of that hair toy! When I first saw it, I thought the ring was totally artsy and part of the intended use. You rock it!
Alyanna, I do what my old old stylist (many bases ago) called a twist cut/trim, where she sectioned my hair into tiny twists, then took her scissors and dusted all the hairs that stuck out of the tight twists in each tiny section. Yes, it took forever but it was worth it and I did it once a month! It kept all my splits in check without sacrificing ANY length. I always attributed that combined with coconut oil and cessation of damaging practices to my hair growth success in the past when I was at TB length. I'll make a video *gasp, did I really say that* if it helps and this doesn't make enough sense! I have a pair of pro scissors and use this as my S&D, always have, and it gets WAY easier as it gets longer to do yourself.
Awesome diagram, thanks a bunch for sharing!
Welcome KatiSasha!
Congrats Caiti! Let us know how it goes!
Auburn, a big congrats to you too! So so exciting! Yay! :D
hi kathie! i have not even attempted an S&D yet on my hair! i have been to the hair dresser the last few times to have a trim and..... yes you've guessed it.... she cut too much off! :(
im going to get some new hair scissors tomorrow and read up on a few articles on S&Ding. Im a little scared that i will mess my hair up trying though!!! :o
BTW! We are so rocking on this thread! so much hair progress here and its fab! Congratulations everyone!!! :cheese:
