I'm going to consider my hair officially APL when my hemline in the back is solidly at APL (i.e., doing more than just barely touching the towel in the towel test) when dry and unstretched. I have layers in the canopy that are a couple of inches shorter, but I have a lotta hair and the overall impression of length is definitely wherever the hemline falls.
Still got a couple of inches to go, so I expect to hit APL sometime this summer. Had a trim in February that blended the layers I'm growing out, and I'm hoping to go until 2013 before I have a trim beyond occasional S&D (I don't get a lot of splits, so S&D for me just consists of grabbing the scissors and removing a split whenever I notice one near my face). Ideally, I'd like to wait on my next trim until my hair is long enough that I'd be comfortable moving to a non-layered cut with a U-shaped hemline. That probably won't be until waist, though.
-
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I've decided to stay in this thread until most of my natural layers are gone and my hemline looks better. I'm going to micro-trim my hair for the rest of the year. I grew out from 1/4 inch of hair and it definitely shows. I've got layers all over the place. Once it looks better then I will aim for longer lengths. So, I won't be going anywhere for awhile.

Wow, I get distracted by deadlines for 2 days and all of a sudden there's like 5 pages of posts on here :D It's good to read through all of them :)
I have taken a couple of pictures of my hairtoyupdo's so here they are:

Roscata, thanks for the great list. That was super helpful. Is there a way to bookmark a single post somehow?
MegaMystery, I second that your seashell bun looks awsome (and I love the color of the ketylo stick!!)
I found myself playing with a toy I seldom use today and since I managed to take a semi-decent picture myself I thought I'd share it with you guys. I normally don't wear any other metal than silver, but this is one of the rare exceptions as I dig the colors of all the stones.

I waited until my bangs hit shoulder then chopped everything else off, that's what put me in this thread actually. But the good part of that is I have all my hair one length, no more worries about bangs or layers. I started growing my hair from a pixie cut and maintained bangs for a while on top of that. Sigh. I feel like I've made many mistakes along the way. I wish I found LHC back in 2006.
Thanks so very much Roscata, I can tell you've been here awhile, you can probably get an LHC degree.:cheese: I guess you are right, I could use MBL, but how would I measure myself, would I use a belt or just draw a line on the picture? It just seems kind of uncomfortable for me because that thread shows a lot of people with bras and I'd be the only one without one. LOL And no, I'm not that bold to wear a bra, but I have tried my sister's and I commend all you ladies for wearing something I feel is uncomfortable, maybe because I lack the ability to fill them.

Hello! Nice to meet someone who is also a iii, now I have someone who I can vent when trying out hairstyles that don't work for our thickness. It seems like custom made or big toys work for my hair. Ughhhh I can sympathize with you on layers, it seems like it will never end for me because of natural sheddings, and new growth everywhere. It's really bad for me since my hair is so coarse that I get bad frizzies. The U-line hemline will definitely look sexy on you, as opposed to me since I'm a guy i'm probably going to stick to a blunt hemline across! Yay I hope to get to know you more!;)

Eh, they look alright. They mostly stay tucked behind my ears, and only show up when I'm trying to make a bun or ponytail. I think I'm definitely going to have some bangs cut in when I get somewhere between APL and BSL. I hate the look of having all my hair pulled back away from my face, I have a strong facial bone structure and it just looks ridiculous if I don't have any hair framing my face to balance it out.
I'll be sure to send her those! I probably won't get it for at least a couple weeks, but I'm so excited already! I'll take lots of action shots, don't worry :cheese:
Here's my hairstyle for the day. I have absolutely no idea WTF happened over there on the left, and I'll probably try to re-do this at some point. But anywho, have something like a cinnabun:

I agree with you that "you have a strong facial bone structure," you probably have an easy time putting blush on to accentuate your features.http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j2.../vanityaq8.gif We are opposites, I have less defined structures so I have to have all my hairs pulled back to show my facial features! ooooh I bet it would be fun to shop at Sephora with you!http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j2...eartbowjz2.gif
Girl, as for your bun, it could use a little loving, but it looks like you put some essential oils because your hair looks shiny and bright. I never knew your hair is getting lighter, maybe it must be the lighting. It must be a bright day over there. Have you tried using coconut oil? If so, try putting a lot more only on the hairs that you will form into the bun. I find it really helpful to do that because it helps the hairs stick and flow, it's a lot trickier to deal with layers sticking out (that involves maneuvering hairs and sticking it in the bun, also I find using the end of a rat tail comb to stick any loose hairs into the bun really helpful). As always, keep practicing! I'm still practicing a lot and I've learned a lot so far with what you all shared so far, it's nice to have a toy day cause it gives me ideas. http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j2...iend/g4441.gifI kinda like the look you have on now, it's a very punk look to me, I dig it!

My bathroom at home has super weird lighting, so that's probably why my hair looks like that.
If I wear blush, I have to do it absolutely perfectly, and only use a teensy bit, otherwise I end up looking like one of those super strict English school headmistresses you see in movies :p
I'm going to oil it better and try again later. I think I like the look of having a few ends popping out, but if I could get them all in there that would be awesome too. Silly hair!

piratejenny, when I get obsessed about something I tend to make a big deal out of it, well I'm going to blame LHC for making me obsessed about my hair and what I can do with it at every stage to come.LOLhttp://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j2...end/000g62.gif
Well more like, experimenting with hair toys is a very first for me since I'm a guy who could not wear them until now. I finally understand from LHC the importance of wearing hair up. Trust me, i'm usually simple when out in public. Before it used to be i'd cover my hair in a bandanna, now I can be simple and stick an antler stick, or some plain fork (exception of my custom made). Plus, I like the idea that hair toys can be used as a self defense mechanism if someone tries to harass or mess with me for being a man who wears them.

I clearly enjoy men having longer hair and wearing toys. Not all kinds of toys, but antler sticks work really well :D... Might have something to do with the fact that the man I have at home has no hair at all (not by choice )

So far I really don't manage much more style-wise than twisting up my ponytail, either tuck in the ends or not and secure. Do I have too many layers? Is my hair too short still or maybe too thick? Suppose I'll have to keep practicing

So far I really don't manage much more style-wise than twisting up my ponytail, either tuck in the ends or not and secure. Do I have too many layers? Is my hair too short still or maybe too thick? Suppose I'll have to keep practicing
You're welcome again. :)
I know what you mean, sometimes it can be frustrating to be stuck with one or two updos. Last time I was at this length I had layers and the only two things I could do were french braid (regular or pinned up/tucked under) and Gibson tuck, but I could have done a sock bun or a peacock twist, except for the part where I didn't know how to do that lol. Practice makes perfect, or your arms tired, or both lol. Good luck! I hope you find something that you love (updo wise).

Ah, yes. Length does seem to really contribute, doesn't it. It's actually funny how that works. In some cases, you don't know how much curl you really have until it gets longer, but then it diminishes the longer it gets because of the weight. I will say though, I like this curl I got going on, just wish my cowlick didn't make it look like I'm growing out a cut where someone took scissors to one side of my head and left the rest thick and full on the other side.. -_-

ETA: I guess I'll alter my type to 1b since I am having difficulty finding my 1a hairs.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
You guys are reading my mind. I was going to post that i could finally wear my short hairsticks and some suggested a list of stuff to try! I am currently in a cinnabun - a small one but still.... and am holding it with small ficcares, short forks and sticks. oh, to have my waist length hair back! I am less than an inch from APL. So close....

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I ended up just having to wear my hair in a pony tail today :( I didn't have time to play with it before I left, and "hair longer than your collar must be tied back " so I just threw it into a quick pony and left it at that. Hopefully I'll have time tomorrow to either do a cinnabun or find my octopus clip. :eyebrows:

Thank you rowie :D I never really thought about it that way, i just assumed because my braids are so much thinner than some of the iii's on LHC that i couldn't possibly be one of them :P But that might be because of layers...

It's ok to wear a ponytail as long as you change the position (High, mid, low ponytail) if you plan to wear a ponytail everyday, and I'm sure you know about that already.:D
It took me a lot of practice to be able to do a cinnabun with a stick in 15 seconds. But thanks for the update! http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j2.../hs2r125ha.gif

Yeah I think you are. I think braiding makes hair look thin or thick depending on how loose or tight you do do it. I can imagine that once the layers are gone you are definitely a iii in my opinion. Plus when I braid my hair it looks thin, but i've learned a trick of pulling each braid apart making it look fatter.http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j2...tar_topper.gif

I bought a ficcare from DaniVerde on the swap board and just got it in the mail today. :D I'll post pictures later, when my camera charges!

I'm in the process of working with Kimi to get my own custom fork :cheese: :cheese: :cheese: :cheese:
My hair is feeling super slippery today, so I think I'll be spending the next couple hours digging my box of oils out of my room so I take another stab at a cinnabun :D

Hee! Doesn't he like long hair then? Mine doesn't seem to care either way, or so he says :)

Here's my ficcare picture!

I just noticed that my natural color appears lighter than it used to.. And I've got a stripe thing going on. :D

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Wow so many pages of so many great updos. Of which I can do oh, a barely contained cinnabun (or however it is spelled). Plus I'm too poor so I feel like I can't really play. That and my hair just isn't co-operative at this length.
However I must say that all these posts have warmed me up to the idea of getting a hair fork (I think that is what they are called). Just have to save up some money, see if I will like it. Hmmm. Maybe if I could get one with hot pink rhinestones on it :D.

Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Man, I am way late to this, but Bunnysaur, Asrai, I am doing physics too! I'm actually doing my second year exams starting a week on Monday, which is why I haven't been here in ages :/ Electromagnetism, Astronomy, Particle, and Electronics. *cries*
We should form a support group or something.
