Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Cassandraj sorry to hear you are not thrilled with things at the moment! Some other experts here can probably offer you better advice, but just wondering if you have tried ditching the coconut for a bit and using something else? I am having pretty good luck with the CV shampoo bars and finding almost NO (seriously) almost no hair in my shower. Of course there is some but it is nothing compared to what I used to have. I am liking the lavender bar right now and it seems to do a really good clean, like I don't have to wash again for ages.

I had the same experience with biotin! I think too much of any chemical in your body can be a bad thing. Your body wants to be in balance and can't seem to get rid of all the excess chemical through normal digestion so it turns to other methods of expelling-through your skin. Now I normally take 1 1500 gel capsule twice a week, sometimes alternating to taking one every other day. My skin has cleared up significantly since taking biotin every day,

I haven't used the flat iron at all since 11/12, it's been one whole month! I am quite amazed at myself, even when I had a pixie I used it every day, at the very least 5 times per week. That being said yesterday I got very frustrated with the amount of fried hair I have on my head and I went on a pulling spree of epic proportions :( a "pulling spree" is like S&D but instead of snipping the damage at a point I just pull/tweeze the hair out from the root. I don't have much growth untouched by a flat iron so I think for me it's just best to rip it out. Yesterday was the worst pulling spree by far, I pulled out so much hair my head actually hurts! The sink was FULL of hair; if I had to guess I'd say I yanked out about 200 or so hairs, then I had a mini fit after I washed my hair and did it a little more.
I'm sure I have little bald spots but somehow it doesn't seem like l lost much because my hair was still a big floof after washing and air drying (I'm sure I lost another 100+ hairs from washing and brushing it out). I just got so tired of patting my hair down the back and feeling so much "crunch" and the tangles that crunchy hair would cause; there's definitely less crunch now but some still remains, I pulled out a couple more this morning but man my head hurts. It's going to take years to sort out this mess I think, I'd like to get to waist and then keep cutting back to BSL until my hair doesn't suck anymore. I really should cut my hair off and start again but I don't have the heart to go through this again, plus I like hair sticks too much
I'll do one last trim before 12/31, then I'm doing a no-trim for 2017 to see how how much length I get.

Please, please please stop pulling out your hair! You are damaging your roots. This is not a good thing if you want healthy hair.

Co-signing with pili! you are going to permanently damage your follicles. Your texture makes it look like you have more hair than you think. What stressed you out so bad you took it our on your hair?

I was under the impression that repeatedly pulling the same hairs over a period of time (years) could damage the follicle. Generally when hair comes out the follicle heals and a new hair comes out. I used to get some of my body hair waxed which I'd been doing for years; I'd always been told that repeated waxing would eventually weaken the follicle and less hair would come back over the time, that wasn't the case for me. I even tried to laser it off, I still get growth!
I started to do this in August I think; I began to notice some of my hair wouldn't even flat iron straight anymore some time ago and made the connection that it was fried due to the heat styling. I know you can't "repair" hair but you can hide the damage/make the damage less noticeable with some products but with these hairs I couldn't do anything. My hair looked like a ratty birds nest of frizz; I tried clarifying and still nothing, these crunchy hairs were done.
When I began to use the flat iron less and let my hair do its thing I noticed that it would tangle like crazy; when I would go to gently take the tangles apart with my fingers it was always the crunchy hair so at this point I started to pull it out. This is how I do it; I will take sections of my hair and look at each strand from that section, I leave the healthy hair alone and if I find a crunchy burnt hair I'll trace it up to just above my scalp and pull it from the root. Before yesterday I hadn't done it in about a month, and before that I did it maybe once every couple of weeks. I have a whoooole lot of little baby hairs all around my head (they like to poke/curl straight up) from the hair that I've pulled so that's a good sign!
I don't think this is stress related since I'm not stressed out, and like I said I will never pull the healthy hair out. I highly doubt I've pulled the same strand twice since it would have had to have grown all the way back to APL between August and now
Perhaps I should take a photo of one of these hairs and put it next to a non-crunchy strand to show you what I mean; I just emptied the bathroom garbage and there's nothing but my hair in it at the moment. I just don't think it's worth keeping tangle prone crunchy fried hair that doesn't respond to anything on my head :(

The fact that you are feeling pain past the original pulling episode tells me you are doing damage to your scalp. Pain is your body telling you to stop. You are also putting yourself at risk of ingrown hairs. I have very thick, very coarse, very dry hair as well. I damaged it with bleaching and also ended up with tangly, crunchy hair that would snap off on its own in one inch sections. I oiled, put it up and waited until the virgin hair was long enough to do a big chop and not end up with a pixie. It sucks, I know. I KNOW! I hated the feel of my hair. You need patience for this journey, and it will happen, I promise. Please be more gentle with yourself.
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
jfg1987, pulling the hair out may not destroy the follicle the first time, but it will still be damaged, possibly beyond healing to how it was before.
We're not supposed to pluck hairs out of our heads... that includes you!

Do you happen to have a link to the cv shampoo bars? Ive never used a shampoo bar before but I am sick of losing so much hair when I do wash it!

Here you go: http://www.chagrinvalleysoapandsalve.com/
I just received my first order from them yesterday. Here is the Shampoo Bar thread too. I suggest reading it as they take some adjustment.
