I have tried oiling the ends recently and some mane n tail in hopes to repair/salvage some of the damage, but I know that when I get it trimmed off I will feel so much better, and it will grow better too. Sigh. I am thinking about holding off until October, and maybe keeping it up as much as I can until then. But I also keep thinking...the sooner the better...
For the first time since high school, I have virgin hair though, no color. I am also considering henna...I have heard it helps make ends stronger...however I am not sure what to use, I have very red hair naturally and was told that if I did it I may end up orange.
What about trying cassia instead?

In terms of wanting a more orangey/red henna, you might want to try yemeni. I've used yemeni light for a strawberry blonde colour in the past, so if you want to avoid the more "purpley/burgundy" red on your base that might be a good one. Lots of people on the henna board should be able to help you with this.
Thank you for the welcome! I am drinking some green tea right now as a matter of fact! :)
I am going to have to look into the henna boards before I make a choice for sure. Thanks!

Is cassia a color of henna or a different option? sorry for the newbie question.
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Cassia is from a different plant than henna and it basically has no colour at all - its also very conditioning for your hair

I think the color would be an added bonus. And I have warm undertones in my skin, and strawberry blonde/deep auburn hair as is, but when its natural it lacks the bam factor I love about reds. To be honest, the conditioning factor is what is drawing me to henna in the first place. I want to salvage my ends. They are brittle/crunchy feeling in the front and top layer of the back. When I look through them, there are maybe only a handful of splits (which I either pull out or trim myself...my pony is 5 inches thick, so pulling out 1 split has never worried me but I don't want to make a habit of it). Besides splits, sometimes I see a bent end, which I trim. But overall, I don't think the ends are damaged beyond repair, the majority of the damage is feeling dry, crunchy, or starting to get frizz. Have you, or anyone, found that it helps salvage the dryness of ends before they get to that point of no return? I want to trim as little as possible, or at least be able to wait until my shortest layers are past shoulder, and then get an all over cohesive trim to set me up for the long stretch. Also, besides henna, anyone else have suggestions for ends while we try to reach apl? I am actually concerned that because my buns are so small and held by my pony that I am causing the damage by putting my hair up.
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
If red hair looked good on me, I'd probably still Henna, but alas, my skin tone favors cooler colors. In regards to the drying factor, I would be careful about the formula of henna you use, i.e. I'd use alot of conditioner or forego the lemon juice etc. Henna dried my hair out but could have been partly due to hard water.
For my SL length hair, if I think it's dry I'll rub a little coconut oil on the ends and do a measely looking french twist bun thing that it held in place by four bobby pins (my hair is thin :( ) Or I put some curl activator on it that has shea butter and natural ingredients. Perhaps try a moisturizing treatment? Do you know if it's just lacking in moisture or needs a protein treatment?

That is a good point. I have been pumping up the moisture lately with oil and conditioners, however I have honestly never considered or tried protein. My skin is oily, and breaks out, but loves an egg white mask every now and then. My hair has never been lacking moisture IMO, however, I consider the roots and 1/2 way down oily and am not sure that is the same as moisturized. A while back I skipped conditioners all together, and was surprised at how soft and tangle free my hair still was. I wonder what a protein "mask"/treatment would do for my ends.

To wash my hair I use anamla soap bar. Then I put a bit of evco or evoo on my ends. That is all as far as washin goes.
As for henna I use Jamila BAQ and since my hair is a dark brown I get a reddish brown, almost auburn color.
