Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Can I get in on this thread? APL on me is about 23.5". So about 2.5" to go. It feels like its taking forever!!! I can't do many updos, mostly just the peacock. Or when the ends of my peacock start looking a little too floppy I tuck them in and leave a little loop on top of the twist. That's how I wear it most of the time. I'm always open to new ideas though...

I can manage a pencil bun and a plain english braid
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
If I'm staying home I'll either do a scrunchie bun, or do one of those half-pulled-through ponytails. Keeps it out of my face and doesn't pull.
If I have to leave the house, I'll twist it up, fold the ends under, and put it into a claw clip. (I know, I know!) I did a sock bun the other day. Soon I'll get a Flexi or some hair sticks so I can start doing other things. Updos have always escaped me; I can't even French braid my own hair yet. I did manage to hold a small bun with a single chopstick, but my ends were sticking out everywhere. It's a start I guess!
I'm working on learning how to do a Gibson tuck and a French twist without having it go lopsided in 5 minutes. I'd love to learn how to wear headscarves and other coverings as well. I never learned how to do anything with my hair before, so I'm planning on having lots of fun with what will no doubt be a very long learning project!

(2) Also putting the top half of my hair in a Flexi8 and then making a loose ponytail with all the hair works sometimes.
(3) I am currently only able to make one secure bun (because of my layers) and I use a clip to keep it in place:
What does everyone else do?

What bun is that?
I also do a peacock twist and French twist of course I just twist and pull the hair over, no folding or tucking. I secure this from the top down with a mutli-pronged fork.
Also the Gibson Tuck, Pencil bun, wrapped hairstick bun, the sock bun obviously and I can now barely make a lazy wrap.
It helps to secure your buns with three or four pronged forks instead of sticks or barettes. Forks hold much better!

It's part French twist part just letting it hang over the clip. I'm not sure if I should have called it a "bun".
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I like hearing about the updos!
Mine is a few inches longer than my avatar and I usually do a peacock twist, since that's the fastest and easiest thing to hold it up. Yesterday I experimented with a messy updo where I divide it in half like a half-up, then braid the bottom half up and the top half down, and secured it with a mishmash of extra large bobby pins crossing each other. That was lots of effort but it looked good.
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I'm at solid SL now (not that I've even posted in here before, idk; just sayin' ;)), and I get headaches with the quickness if I put my hair up for longer than 10 minutes! Man. I didn't know the aching-from-hair-being-up would start this soon. Anyway, I was doing a lot of the high half-ponytail, but I can't have it up for long.
I've got twin regular English braids in the back right now, shiny with coconut oil. This is very, very comfortable and keeps my hair out of my way. Same with loose double pigtails. I just did one Dianyla braid in the back yesterday! Just thought I'd try it, and it was a little wonky and loose, but it worked and it stayed. :D It was pretty cool. It looked good, and it's been yeeeeaaars since I was able to put my hair into one english braid. Double english and dutch braids are great, too. I love two french braids, with the actual french braiding part starting at the back of crown area, or whatever. Like parting my hair for a half-up, but using that whole front section to start the french braid all the way down on each side.
I'd do more half-ups, but I just don't like the feeling of half my hair being up and the bottom half down. It just feels weird to me. But when my hair was too short to put it all up in any way, I'd part my hair on the side and do a french braid (if possible) or just English braids from the front on each side. Just like a half-up but with the two top/front parts braided back and the rest down (since it was too short to braid, of course). Hope that makes sense. But it was my go-to style for any time, to get my hair out of my face. I love braids. :D
I've got a true ponytail now, which is pretty sweet. It's weighed down now, and everything. :p I remember when my hair is APL+ my ponytail droops like nobody's business and nothing will keep it up! I'm thinking I might have to try layers for a while this go-round (once my hair is longer), because it's just so dang heavy and lays there when it's blunt. Anyway, I've cut some random layers in the ends of my hair to break it up and give it some messiness, because I much prefer that to Triangle Head Girl.
Oh oh oh, one thing that I love and forgot to mention is that I made up this awesome new style a few months ago, and haven't tried it for a bit; I'm sure it'll work even better now that my hair is longer.. Maybe I should call it something. I'll call it Pretend Dread Ponytail Awesomeness. I was just messing around for a minute one day, and I put my hair in a high ponytail, then took a section of the ponytail hair and braided it into an english braid, then tied the end with one of those wee and thin elastics. And I did the same with the rest of the ponytail hair, it was 3 or 4 braids; can't remember; gotta do it again. But it turned out so cool! It looked like I had this thick ponytail of dreads, because they weren't perfect braids coming out of the ponytail or anything- there were layers and such poking out of each, because it was a high ponytail and whatnot. And they didn't lay down, but were just sticking out and being a bit crazy and doing their thing, as dreads do. So I felt like my usual hippie, nature-girl self, but a fake-step further with pretend dreads. ;) :p I didn't know the style would end up looking like it at all, and was happy and thrilled when it did! Ha. I'll try this again today, hopefully I'll be able to keep it in for awhile.
Methinks that's all I have to say about that.
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I'm at SL, and today I got a lot of compliments on my first attempted fancy updo... two dutch braids converging in a nape-bun and secured with a fork.
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I'm dying to see pictures of these updos!! I added some messy braided updo pics to my album.
I think my hair might be long enough for 2 french twists next to each other even though it isn't long enough for one french twist by itself... I'm going to try that later.

Oh, I do that, too! :) That is very comfy on my head. I also braid on each side and clip each up also. I like two of everything. :p
LawyerGirl, that updo sounds beautiful! :D I've got to try that. Never even thought of it. There are so many things we can do, but it's hard for me to remember them all. I've actually got a piece of paper with diagrams and names of some funky easy styles I like to do that are hard to remember all the time in my hair stuff drawer. :p Yours is one I'll have to put on there.
