Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I have problems covering the donut/sock, it always feels I don't have enough hair. I also don't like the added weight, and the way the donut bun seems to hover a bit above the head - like a ufo ready to take off, lol. I get the bun closer/flusher to my head by using an actual sock, the donut form gives always the hovering effect. Anyone else have that?
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
My reason for wanting the sock bun is to wear overnight so that my 2nd day hair will be lovely. Right now, I don't have enough hair to help the sock stay in place for all night wearing. I have been successfully pineappling though, but my toddler hates it and wants my pineapple OUT! haha
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I just tried the donut again and my hair covers it better than it did when I first got it. But rolling it tight to my head is hard.....maybe there is a trick. And maybe I am just reluctant to pull firmly due to worrying about hair loss. I do like the look....a nice normal sized bun, lol. I believe layers make it harder to use.

Are you using one of those meshy premade doughnuts? I had one once, and that was my problem too, and I couldn't really figure out how to pin it down.
There is a way to use a sock bun with layers - instead of rolling the sock all the way, leave a bit unrolled so it goes over your hair like a sleeve. Then when you roll it down, the hair stays put. Like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4x6SZmlC1M (not the best tutorial, but I can't find the one I watched).
ETA: This is the one I watched: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2EQW3WpVn24 Ignore the part where she bakes her hair to her head...
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Sweetaj, thank you. That does look better than the donut I bought. I did ignore the baking, but wow, it gave me a headache to see her hair pulled back so tight. And I forgot that you need a ponytail first. When I tried the donut just now I did it without a rubber band.
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
That is a good idea in that second video - but the "baking" made me cringe!!
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I haven't been able to make the rolled down sock bun yet, but I haven't seen the "sleeve" method before. I usually have done the fan your pony over the donut version at this length.
PS. with practice, no ponytail holder is needed. When my hair was longer the last time, I was able to learn the rolled down version without hair tie.

It helps to spread your hair around with each roll to cover more evenly.
Push down on the bun and then using the hair around the form to secure it to your scalp with pins.
I found slipping a scrunchie around it secures it well and matches my outfits.
It is also a good bun for bigger hair forks; as you catch the bun hair and scalp hair, it makes the bun snug against your scalp and is a good cover for a larger FPL.
The tube version is a great help for catching layers!

Welcome to the new gals! May your hair grow fast and healthy!
I am going to attempt some sock bun curls tomorrow for my 2nd day hair. My hair is the type of wavy that can appear really curly on day 1, but after I sleep on it, it's nearly straight. I think that sock bun curls will work well for me - maybe not at this length, but someday!! I am going to put it in 2 buns tonight to try it out.

Congratulations to all those who've finally made it!
I will have to try and take a photo next time I wash mine - it's hard to guess how long I still have until APL when my hair's dry. And I'm just not good at measuring them, either.
Thanks you guys! Sorry for the long absence, life got crazy and I haven't had time to get on and post. I appreciate each and every one of your comments. It's not the greatest picture since it was day 5 hair but I will take the length. I guess Im moving on to the APL to BSL thread. Im excited but a little sad to leave.. I will miss the wonderful support of everyone on this thread. Happy growing and I will see you on the APL to BSL thread. :)
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I am officially declaring APL today. My hair definitely was there when dry and not stretched. So, on to the APL to BSL thread!!!! WooHoo!!!!!!! Shoulder to APL took FOREVER!
