Wow thank you all so much for your replies! I would have liked to tag you all, but I'm still (slowly) getting acquainted with how this all works haha.
I have a lot of new things to try now, thanks a bunch! <3

I am soooo frustrated at the moment on my growth.
I got a pixie cut (regretfully) in November 2018.
It slowly grew out and was a horrible mullet so I got a trim to even out.
Not much was cut, just a trim and that was last year in November 2019.
Now it is still not at my shoulders, my hair is about half down my neck but unless I'm constantly
using the hair straightener, it doesn't sit right and bounces up. It is so dry and I care for it so much and eat right. How long did it take for people hair to grow from just before the shoulders to after the shoulders? I actually don't feel like my hair will ever get there right now.
Thank you, Lanalavallama!!
Do you still use the hair straightener? The dryness might be from damage, or lack of moisturizing.
I know it's frustrating when there's no visible growth (ah, I actually just wrote about that a page back, here), but you'll get there!! Also, waves and curls can behave in funny ways at this short length so I really feel your frustration, but soon it will be pulled down by gravity and its own weight and likely settle into something that looks more intentional. Though now I actually miss the bounce it had. :)
My passing of shoulder length happened in the past year, I wrote about it here. :)
I just barely hit shoulder right around when I joined this site. I wasn't tracking my hair growth then, and that's probably why it didn't feel like it took too long.
I don't remember exact dates or anything, but I know I had chin length hair in may, and I was just hitting shoulder length in november, with 1-2 trims in between. Like, my hair just barely brushed my shoulders then, which sounds like it's not that far from where you are?
But we all have different growth rates, so don't worry too much about where you're "Suppose" to be.
I also totally relate on the whole bouncing up issue. Hair flips up when it hits the shoulder just naturally. My stylist told me at one point it would stop in about 6 weeks of growth, it took way longer than that. I'm partially blaming being 2A, I think maybe the natural wave holds the bounce better when other hairtypes weigh it down by that point. That just takes a lot of patience to deal with. For me, my stylist cutting in some layers helped, because at least part of it wasn't joining in on the flip, and it looked like more of a style. But I get that a lot of people don't want many haircuts or layers, so it's up to you.
I also agree with ynne about the haircare stuff. Straightners can be absolute killers!
If you have any days where you're not out in public, right now might be a good time to experiment with different techniques for styling your hair. I can get mine pretty smooth and straight with a round brush and a hairdryer on warm, and that's not quite as damaging. I've also had lots of success with using some gel and letting it air dry.
This is also the length I learned to french braid on. It was way too short to do a full one on for a while, but you can do a half ups with both single and double french/dutch braids. Oh, and lace braids too. Sometimes that can help you feel more polished when your hair just wants to do its own thing.
Happy growing!
The answer to this varies and, additionally, it depends on whether your hair likes what you are doing for it or not.
I saw decent growth when I gave up what I hoped it liked in favour of what actually worked (ie. no more shampoo! I could get angry when I think of how much damage shampoo was causing my hair, but what a waste of energy that would be).
I would guestimate that from halfway down my neck to touching shoulders/the base of my neck it took under 6 months. I had to and still have to trim to get the damage out, so if you do not have damage that you need to trim or a giraffe neck like I do, you might get there in a shorter time frame. And then, depending on where you call it shoulder length, any hair growth will be longer than shoulder length.
I completely understand how frustrating it can get, and growing curly hair is not for the impatient.
Just try focusing on aspects of hair care other than length (easier said than done especially if you visit LHC frequently).
It does grow, just give it the time to do that.
ynne such a pleasure.
Thank you for all the advice, I really appreciate it. I guess at least there is something to look forward to for the end of the year..longer hair
Hello there! I think I’m in the right place. My hair is currently sitting very awkwardly at my shoulders/collarbone and sticking out all over the place lol. My next milestone is APL ... I haven’t decided how long I will grow it, but that’s the longest I’ve let it grow in modern history lol.
My hair grows the average 1/2” a month and I’m predicting about 10-12 months to get to APL. I don’t plan to trim, just S&D on my way. I’m also giving up color but I might do a semi if the grown out look gets to me. So I’m looking at April-June 2021.
Looking forward to reading this thread and taking this journey with y’all!
Welcome to the thread redfrau! I think 10 months for SL to APL is pretty doable. Do you have a long torso? I think it could be even less with an average of 1/2" a month.
I think I joined this thread somewhat around february but never really called SL so I didn't join 'Officially'. Now it's past my shoulders and about halfway there to APL stretched. Curly it's still not even close to SL lol.
Welcome Redfrau! Good luck on your journey!
My hair is now solidly past my collarbones!:D
Still hoping for APL by the end of this year, but I definitely need some good growth this summer. I have quit dyeing my hair, hope that helps a little as well.
For me it took about 4 months, but I did do everything I could to wear it up as much as possible and no heat styling at all. My hair grows about average I think. It is such an annoying phase! My hair has lots of layers, so it jumped all over the place if I was wearing it down. The hemline is still not very pretty, but it's a little flatter at least.
