Do you trim your own hair?
I just cant imagine going to a hair dresser and asking specifically for only 1/2 inch off and not end up with far more than that taking off. That is just based on my past experiences. I do S&D of my own hair, cut off any fairy knots and even dust the ends when needed but I haven't actually attempted to trim my hair.
I’m lucky that I have a very accurate hairdresser and she’s great at communication. When I ask for half an inch she asks me to clarify whether I mean half an inch off the back and less off the front to square it up (since my hair grows faster at the back), or whether I mean half an inch off the front and so about 3/4 off the back. Basically, she checks down to a quarter of an inch, and then does exactly what we agreed. I’ve even measured at home afterwards and it’s been exact :)
I’d like to be able to cut my own but I don’t think I could do it very well at this length, and I’ve got nothing to lose by going to my current hairdresser (except money of course!!) I might be brave and try to trim when it’s longer. I have cowlicks that cause problems with the hemline so I don’t dare yet.
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I agree to slowly trim out layers instead of big chops. I've got both layers and damage I need to get rid of, but length is really important to me - at this point I won't trim off anything but split ends simply because I can't stomach to lose any of my growth. I plan on doing bi-annual little trims until my hair reaches a comfortable length (waist or perhaps a bit earlier, I think) and then trim off more frequently, but still allowing a bit of growth.
I'm fairly sure any hairdresser would sigh and shake their head at me, but doing bigger chops would just feel like such a setback. I chopped from BSL to CBL right before joining here and even though my hair was incredibly damaged, I regret chopping off so much right away. Now I would have gone about it by trimming off almost all growth each month or so, slow and steady while still having 'long' hair.
The more honor to those who go for the big chop; it's awesome to just get it done and start fresh, but it's not the only option.
I'm still a bit unsure of how to proceed with trimming though. I do not trust hairdressers to cut off little enough, especially considering my ends are damaged, and I don't really have the money for it. I could get DBF to do it; he is no skilled hairstylist but he knows how much I care and would be very careful. Or I could do Feye's method myself which would be a bit uneven probably, but at least then I am guarateed to not have more cut off than I want. Oh well, I have until summer to decide. :)
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I also started growing from very short hair so I'm constantly battling with layers. I did some bigger mullet cuts in the beginning but now that I finally have some overall length I'm keeping the trims as small as possible, even though I still have layers to go. Small trims, small trims...
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Back in September I had my hair cut into a curly bob that is shoulder length when straightened. After a few turns to keep the shape, I have decided to grow it until it’s at least at the shoulders curly again. The last time I had APL hair it was a few inches below the shoulders curly. I’m excited to be looking for tips on the grow out again. Right now my hair is just hitting an awkward length curly when it is no longer a nicely shaped bob but not deliberately a shoulder curly cut.
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
My hair hit an awkward length too. Couple of months ago my front hair managed to form some very loose waves for a short period of time but now has straightened, instead my front hair has flipped ends. Like Rihanna here https://s1.r29static.com//bin/entry/...4418/image.jpg though some days the other side is flipped towards my face while the other side faces outwards :dizzy:
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I need to be in this thread now, because I FINALLY got past collar length. My hair is just above my bra strap at my longest layer in back. I am keeping my light layers until I get to waist length because my hair is so coarse and thick, I can't handle it otherwise. I think I'll be starting to wear it up more once it starts to warm up a bit. I'll try to get some decent photos when my husband feels like taking some for me. Glad to be here at last.

Lol yeah, gotta love the Bree van de Kamp-look! My hair still sometimes does this, especially after a bun. My favorite is when one side is dead straight and the other does the flip.

I did love Bree van de Kamp's look but it's not for me personally :D same thing, it's pretty much guaranteed that I'll have flipped ends after a bun. I wonder at which length it will stop happening...
