Exciting times Messyhair!
I was very busy in the past months, so after I took a length shot in October where I was almost at APL, I had no time to check my hair length. I felt I am there, but yesterday I made a length shot and I can say, I am officially graduated. I am wearing my hair up or in a braid almost all the time, so I am surprised with my length.
Here are my length shot from October and yesterday:

You can see my natural color on the top of my head! Yes, I have silvers! :)
I didn't trim my hair more than a year, so this year I need some trimming to refresh my ends and get rid of some of my layers and dye.
See you in the next thread!
Whoohoo Lumienkeli that's awesome :) some great growth there in just a few months. Send some growing vibes to me haha
I just found out my new hairdresser is going on mat leave, so will have a really decent cut in 2 weeks (havent had a cut since May last year) and then I'll hold out for whenever she is back. I mostly get my regrowth done cos I'm getting very grey !! but will leave my next trim after this one til the end of the year . Will definitely be in Apl territory by then
Congrats for your hair graduation Lumienkeli! :D
I feel like I am in the midst of the awkward stage and have been for past two years since I started growing out my natural hair lol. I am not sure how I am going to get out of the awkward stage! I have so many layers since I grew it from "bald" that it just looks odd. Though the longer its getting, the less unruly it seems to get.
I am hoping that with length, the layers will seem less extreme. I have been tempted many a times to get my hair cut by a curly hair stylist to give it a better shape and blend the layers better...but I know it means I will have to lose healthy length for my bottom layers! I cant stomach it knowing how hard and awkward this past year was for me. I worked so hard to nurture my hair and keep it as healthy as possible and it has paid off. I don't want to cut off any of that effort. So I am just going to hang in there until I get to APL and perhaps then I can try to maintain there for a while and even out the layers.
Congratulations Lumienkeli that’s fantastic :)
BerrySara I think most of us have had, or currently have, that layers dilemma. Mine was from growing out pixie layers plus post partum shed that made my ends thin, even at chin length. I wanted to even them up as soon as possible so I took the slow road as far as growth was concerned, and the last half inch of layers will go with my next trim.
I did a bigger trim once (just an inch) and it was frustrating waiting to get back to where I had been, so I decided that the best way for me was to have half an inch trimmed every 3 months, so I always felt like I was moving forwards.
Lady Stardust that makes me feel better knowing I'm not alone and I am sorry you experienced post partum shedding (though I am certain it was well worth it of course!!). I do think that it makes good sense to take off half an inch every 3 month so it wont feel so drastic taking a big chunk off later on. Also waiting until I get to APL to maintain until layers are even may get discouraging as I would feel stuck.
I think getting close to APL I might just start doing something similar. Take off 1/2 inch of the 1.5 inch length gain. That should still give me 4inches of progress in a year.
Well I think the post partum shed was worth it .... but my daughter has just got chicken pox so ask me again in a couple of weeks :)
I’m glad that sharing my plan was helpful :) Half an inch isn’t really noticeable off the length so you don’t feel like you’re losing much, it makes the ends feel loads better and it’s always moving in the right direction! I get about average growth so yes it’s around 4 inches a year with trims.
I was quite stressed about the thin ends to begin with but having a trimming schedule really helped because I knew that it would improve again with the next trim so I could forget about it in the meantime.
It’s great that you’re nearly at APL and even better if you can keep moving forward and even up your layers at the same time :)
Hehe, aww I hope she feels better soon!
Do you trim your own hair?
I just cant imagine going to a hair dresser and asking specifically for only 1/2 inch off and not end up with far more than that taking off. That is just based on my past experiences. I do S&D of my own hair, cut off any fairy knots and even dust the ends when needed but I haven't actually attempted to trim my hair.
