Brushing with clouds - TEK and WIDU users unite!
I notice there is surprisingly little talk about these amazing brands of brushes here at the LHC, and thought that it has to change!
I am under an impression that TEK and WIDU are a same company, only the former is for European markets, where-as the latter is for North American markets. I don't know under what name they are sold elsewhere (do tell if you know!).
These are very high quality, hand made, Italian brushes. The materials, design, finish, ergonomy, lightness are all top notch!
Do you have TEK/WIDU? What kind? How long you have had it? Do you love it? What specifically? Do you recommend it to others? Have you seen positive effects on your hair since purchasing it?
Tell us all!

Re: Brushing with clouds - TEK and WIDU users unite!
Never heard of them, but looked them up and they sure look great! Handmade in Italy - plus points :) My problem is that they're rather expensive for the poor me.

Re: Brushing with clouds - TEK and WIDU users unite!
I recently (very recently) was gifted a TEK brush and I couldn't be happier! It feels against my head like I would be brushing with clouds - in a same way comfortable shoes feel like you would be walking on clouds. Hence the thread title.
I have the rectangular paddle brush with normal length pins (baseball pin type).
I have only very little experience yet, but it is 100% positive. The quality is hard to miss: smooth surfaces, there is no grain of wood to be felt. It feels just right in hand, and is very nicely balanced, ergonomical, light, and a perfect size. So comfortable to use! It does not catch hairs like some brushes do. It doesn't have knobs at the ends of pins, nor do the pins catch hairs between them and the rubber base.

Yes they are on the expensive side, but the reviews online give impression that this brush will last a good 10-15 years. Any broken pins can be replaced too, which is nice!

Re: Brushing with clouds - TEK and WIDU users unite!
I adore my WIDU!!!!! it is my favorite brush. it doesn't grab, snap, or otherwise injure my hair. Mine is the rectangle paddle brush with regular length bristles.
My only issue with it is that I feel the need to be very careful with it when I wash it. I don't want to leave it wet for long at all. Getting my sebum wax off of the bristles can be so hard!!! Fortunately, I don't use hairspray or styling aids very often, and only really see bad brush buildup after I've used dry shampoo.
I would happily recommend it to folks who don't want to give up their brushes, but want something much friendlier.
Also, the majority of my hair hasn't been trimmed in well over a year, and the bottom was last trimmed about 10 months ago.. still no splits, despite daily brushing. So I don't believe that it is causing any harm!

Re: Brushing with clouds - TEK and WIDU users unite!
I have the XL WIDU brush with the rectangular head and the longer wooden bristles. I absolutely love it!! :cheer::heartbeat I had (gave away) other wooden bristle brushes, but the WIDU is just hands down better. I have many of the other good brushes discussed on this site, but again, the WIDU wins as favorite every single day.
They have occasional sales, and I got mine at 20% off.

Re: Brushing with clouds - TEK and WIDU users unite!
I have had my WIDU long bamboo bristled brush for at least 20 (could be getting close to 25) years and I adore it. I've had to replace less than a handful of bristles over the years - this beauty has really stood the test of time. I use it after detangling, or to detangle not-very-tangled hair.
I bought a smaller WIDU for my daughter at the same time I bought my brush, and she's still using hers, too!

I bet! I'll definitely keep this brand in mind! Sounds great!

Re: Brushing with clouds - TEK and WIDU users unite!
I have the old Body Shop wooden bristle brush - it's nice as well. I think I like this second best next to my TT.

We seem to have the same model! Great to hear that your hair has not seen any damage from brushing!
What kind of washing method have you found to be the best?

A-ha, another rectangular paddle brush user! How do you like the long pins? Are you in the ii or iii range?
I was torn between the normal pin length, which has slightly rounded base of the pin, and the long pins which are completely straight. I was "scared" the long pins would be over kill to my not very thick hair, so I finally decided to go with the normal length pins version.

Wow that is something! If the cost of the brush is divided to that kind of time frame, it is actually very cheap! And you have so much hair too, I image your hair has killed a brush or two before you found WIDU!
So they used bamboo to make the pins back then? Or do you mean, like with THIS brush that the pins are wood but the shape of this particular pin is what they call "bamboo shape" - like my pins are "baseball pins".

I've heared good things about that brush too. The newer design apparently isn't that good, was it so?

Don't know. Don't have the new design. It has ball bristles, whereas the older model had just straight pins (awesome). If this ever goes kaput, I'll just stick to my TT. But right now I am using my TT exclusively, have been for the last decade. :)

Re: Brushing with clouds - TEK and WIDU users unite!
Arctic, it's good to hear you love that brush so much!
So I suppose you got Big rectangular brush with baseball pins, arctic? I never even looked at the base ball pins, but then again for my hair type the long pins are better, I suppose.
I know the tek brushes are very nice. Had them in my hands a couple of times, but I also know, that there are at least two German makers, that make basically the same brush, but without the ball ends. One is Faller, the other is Keller and they are both around 10 €. The TBS Brush is not any good at the moment, but lapushka, for you it sould not be too difficult to get your hands on German brushes, in case the old TBS Brush won't make it any more.
In fact this thread made me decide today, to gift some Faller Brushes to two girlfriends.
Note: The good model from Keller is a very dark wood oval brush. From Faller every brush I had in my hands looked good so far.
Am I right in buying the bigger brush for the friend with a lot of hair and the smaller brush for the friend with few fine hair? Or would both rather need the bigger brush?

Re: Brushing with clouds - TEK and WIDU users unite!
Yay I'm glad you like the Tek brush, Arctic!
I love my Widu! Best wooden brush I've used and is the gentlest on my hair.
Far superior to my Bass wooden brush and Body shop wooden brush. That body shop one is complete garbage (the newest model with the ball tips). It was so rough on my hair I couldn't even brush through one section. And it would pull really bad even on completely detangled hair.
Widu/Tek all the way :)

Re: Brushing with clouds - TEK and WIDU users unite!
Arctic, I use a little shampoo and rub it on the bristles, dunk it in a sink of warm water, then I use my long bristled rubber cleaning brush (for gentle scrubbing) and rub it into the Widu bristles for a while. Then I rinse my Widu and check for residue.
Once I am satisfied, I dry the wood with a towel, then set it bristle side down on another towel to dry. Once dry, I lightly oil the handle somewhat heavily and the bristles lightly, since they will get sebum on them soon enough.
I have also been known to take a tooth floss (like the GUM brand) and "floss" the problem bristles.

Re: Brushing with clouds - TEK and WIDU users unite!
I"ve had a Widu for about 5 or 6 years. It's not my main brush (that's a Mason Pearson), but it does get used a couple of times a week probably. I have this one:https://www.widu.com/product/34594
I really like it, and it's still practically like new even though I used it all the time when I first got it. It's very gentle and does a good job with any tangles I might have missed with the comb. It doesn't give as smooth or polished a look as the MP, which is why I use it more often.
I also purchased the colored small purse brush a couple of years ago - and I wasn't at all happy with it. It has a couple of rough places and catches my hair quite badly.

I love the longer pins. My hair is ii thickness. I don't know what you mean about the base of the pin. All the brushes on the WIDU site are straight base as far as I can see.
I also have an all boar bristle Mason Pearson, but I like the WIDU better and use it every day.

Re: Brushing with clouds - TEK and WIDU users unite!
Bought a Widu brush a couple of days ago because of this thread (enablers!), delivered today. I've been using a Denman D5 for years. I'd had the same one for probably a decade before the rubber wore out, just replaced it last year with another. The Widu is so much gentler. No static at all, unlike the Denman which would go crazy with static. The wood is beautiful too. Definitely worth the money, I paid about $35 or so on Amazon. I want to stay home and just brush my hair all day.

Re: Brushing with clouds - TEK and WIDU users unite!
If they're the same, why are the TEK ones so much cheaper than the WIDU ones??
-
Re: Brushing with clouds - TEK and WIDU users unite!
I'm assuming because Widu brushes are imported from Italy, and Tek brushes are sold straight from the source? You're paying higher prices for Widu to account for the cost of importing them from overseas.

Re: Brushing with clouds - TEK and WIDU users unite!
Lot of posts I need to get back to later!

You know I have to admit I am not sure they are the same company. I saw it being mentioned by several people over internet, but I couldn't find any confirmation of trustworthy kind. But the products look almost identical, both hand made in italy of same materials, both very high quality and have rave reviews. I have not personally seen and held Widus, though, only seen photos. Widu is not sold in Europe (to my knowledge), and Tek isn't sold in North America (to my knowledge).
Some even said that Tek would actually be called "Tek by Widu" but I only got hits from ebay stores with that search phrase, and it says no such thing on my brush or it's package - only TEK.
It is possible the companies are not the same, but they do have such identical products (the best I can see and from what I have read) I'd say they are comparable even still.

Re: Brushing with clouds - TEK and WIDU users unite!
I have a dupe of this one.
http://www.tek-italy.it/tek-consumer...val-brush.html
Looks exactly the same, same material, same shape, same pins, but from a different company and much cheaper. 8 Euros at Rossmann.

So my local TJ Maxx had a whole row of Tek combs, $4.99 each. Bought a smaller one for my handbag. Gonna give them a try when I get home. The quality is really good, nice and smooth.

They also had some really nice oils. I got a huge dropper bottle of oil mix (almond, argan, jojoba, avocado, and jasmine among others) for $6. Definitely worth checking out!

How cool, so Tek is available in US too! Great find!!!

Re: Brushing with clouds - TEK and WIDU users unite!
TJ Maxx always stocks a lot of European items. I find UK chocolates all the time there.
-
Re: Brushing with clouds - TEK and WIDU users unite!
Well they didn't have many at my store, only had 3 of the small darker brown combs- but I got one and am happy :) Thanks for the PSA, jennareid!
Already like it more than my body shop comb. And only 5 dollars- what a steal

Re: Brushing with clouds - TEK and WIDU users unite!
Oh, that Faller brush looks nice! I'm fond of olive wood.
-
Re: Brushing with clouds - TEK and WIDU users unite!
I bought this one off of Amazon, and I love it. It does feel much better than the cheap wooden brushes I've had in the past. This one has a replaceable head like the denman, but the rubber and bristles have much more give, more like a cushion brush.

Re: Brushing with clouds - TEK and WIDU users unite!
I asked myself the same question! Why aren't these brushes more famous on this forum. I have had mine for a super long time. 7 or 8 years I think. I adore it. I have the big rectangular brush and it really is as if you are brushing with clouds! :D I have some of their combs too and they have amazing quality as well

Re: Brushing with clouds - TEK and WIDU users unite!
Does anyone have any particular recommendation for one style of bristle?

I vastly prefer the straight bristles, without the little balls on the end, if that's what you mean.
-
Re: Brushing with clouds - TEK and WIDU users unite!
I have had a Widu with the straight bristles since 1998 or 1999. I absolutely adore mine. I even have the smaller travel size, in the same style. My fiance fell in love with mine after staying over a few times and told me he wanted one of his own for Christmas.
-
Re: Brushing with clouds - TEK and WIDU users unite!
I ended up getting a Widu paddle, because the only shipping option on the TEK website was expensive courier service, which I absolutely did not want, and couldn't opt out of. It has straight bristles, no ball tips, and I decided on the 1" long bristles, because I don't think anything longer would make any difference for fine hair. So, fingers crossed! I hope it's good! :D

Re: Brushing with clouds - TEK and WIDU users unite!
I still love my rectangular TEK brush (with normal length pins) but I think I am just more a comb type of person than brush person. Comb is what I reach for the most, brush I mostly use for smoothing for updos. So, I've been considering buying a TEK wide tooth comb now!
-
Re: Brushing with clouds - TEK and WIDU users unite!
I love my Tek paddle brush and I didn't want anything else (except my tangle teaser :p ).One thing I dislike is to clean it because I can't get the hairs out of it easily!
-
Re: Brushing with clouds - TEK and WIDU users unite!
I looked at these brushes on Amazon UK and have to admit that I can't afford one. With shipping and handling they would cost about 1,000 DanishCrowns. So, I bought a lovely bamboo brush at the Body Shop which is heavenly to use.
-
Re: Brushing with clouds - TEK and WIDU users unite!
Alright, I asked a TEK comb for birthday, and my gifter asked if there is something else in the web shop I'd like, so that he would save the postage fees. I listed few others things, one of which was an other type of TEK comb. I'm yet to see what he actually gets to me, I would have been very happy with just the one comb I originally asked for. It is the red small, wide tooth comb. (THIS)
So, in addition to that I might also get this one: CLICK
I am excited about the comb(s)! I have really liked my body shop wooden wide toothed comb, but I don't think it's as smooth anymore as it once was, and it's slightly warped also. It will make a good hand bag comb still, though. It must be almost 9 years old though!
The website says you can use TEK combs in shower??? Has anyone actually had the nerve to try that? They claim the structure is the secret for the waterproofness: , the combs are made of 2 sections, the teeth and the spine of the comb, both are cut so that the grain of the wood is running in different directions (one is horizontal grain, one is vertical grain). I too of a wuss to ever try taking the comb in shower, I do have a seamless acetate comb for that.

Re: Brushing with clouds - TEK and WIDU users unite!
Oh I forgot, weren't we birthday buddies or something, Arctic?
And I have the first one you showed. I got it as a gift, but I prefer the one with the handle.
I got these two now, I love them so much, because they are so pretty! However, the brush is less cloudlike than the original, just so you know. Still great though
