At least, when you get soap in your eyes, you KNOW that you did, and you can immediately rinse it out. Soap hurts, but it's not nearly as bad for your eyes as SLS shampoos are. Research has shown that sulfates are very damaging for your eyes, and can even cause permanent eye damage in children. And the scary thing is that many SLS shampoos have ingredients in them to minimize eye pain, so you might not even be able to tell if you DO get any in your eyes. Scary thought!
Hope you continue enjoying your shampoo bars, though! :)
Wow, I didn't know that! I've probably got SLS shampoo in my eyes before - and it hasn't stung so much, nothing near the shampoo bar at least. It is a bit scary - and I seem to remember a children's shampoo that advertised "no more tears" - I don't know if there was sulfates in it, though, or if they still make it. :-\
I am enjoying my shampoo bar, today I did an acidic rinse (WV) and only washed my scalp, and it feels even softer this time. :cheese:

A lot of conventional styling products have cones in them- just keep an eye on the label.
But just because you're using poo-bars doesn't mean you need to avoid cones like the plague, you might just have to clarify every now and again, or you might not have a problem at all.
Re: The Shampoo Bar Thread
Thanks, Katie! Yes I've been watching the labels for cones. Are there other things I should watch out for?

Besides cones- I don't think so, unless there is something in particular your hair doesn't like
I'm not much help really because all I use on my hair is shampoo bars, ACV, body shop conditioner, oils, glycerin, and aloe vera. Teehee, that's actually a bit of a list. Still much shorter than your average conventional hair product ingredient list though :D
Re: The Shampoo Bar Thread
I tried one shampoo bar that I bought from a local soapmaker and the result was desastrous. Wax, wax, wax and more wax. My first sulfate wash left my hair with tiny peaces of white wax everywhere and it took at least 6 sulfate wash to fully get rid of it all, meaning almost three weaks. I took a shampoo bar for dry hair and I think I shouldn't have.
I'm desapointed I was really excited about this, especially the low packaging aspect of it. I'm back to my regular paraben, phtalate, sulfate and sillicone free liquid products...

OK, good. I'm mainly concerned about build up. At the moment, I only use the CV bar plus ACV rinse and conditioner without cones. Part of me wants to keep it that way as it's working pretty well so far (my hair is nice and soft and feels healthy :)), but I'd like to know what the scope is for using styling products now and then. Sometimes my hair gets a bit flat between washes. I'm going to check out aloe vera gel & oil as a natural styling product and see what happens with that.

Oh, I'm sorry, how annoying :( Do you have hard water? I also got the waxy feeling when I started, I was living somewhere with harder water then. But it got better with the ACV rinse and my hair also needed an adjustment period. Almost three weeks sounds very bad, though.
Re: The Shampoo Bar Thread
autumn leaves I've been using shampoo bars for quite some time. This year I've started using various cones on my length and it's been working out great for me. I use a leave in conditioner and a bit of coney shine spray. I only wash my length once a week (scalp washes every other day) and haven't had any trouble with build up.
It's probably going to vary greatly depending on products used and different factors including water, washing schedule and method and hair health, etc...
I've ordered more SCH shampoo bars and am excited to try some of the ones I haven't used before. The mint and lime ones are different for me and I got two favorites again, Ylang Ylang and Citrus.
I've been cheating on them with a locally hand made goat milk with spearmint bar I recently purchased though. I'm really torn because it's pretty much awesome so far. I've used it for a week and a half now and it smells so minty and doesn't weigh my hair down either, surprisingly even though it has some oatmeal bits in it. It's a regular soap bar with lots of stuff in it: goatmilk, oatmeal, honey, pepperment essential oil and grapefruit seed extract.

Thanks, Gabriel, that's good to know. I think I got a bit hysterical about build up at some point so it's good to hear some more nuanced accounts :) I guess it's all just a process of experimenting and finding out what works for my hair, and then having to do a SLS wash if necessary. I did have a leave in conditioner with cones that I really liked, so maybe I'll go back to trying that out. I've now ordered a Jason conditioner for curly hair with no cones, so I'm going to see how that works first. My hair feels healthy, so it's really just the volume/ enhancing curls part of it that I'm trying to fine tune, along with wash frequency (every two - three days at present, it's a bit random whether I do scalp only or ends as well).
The goat milk soap sounds super nice :D I've ordered two different marshmallow ones plus a vegan shampoo with eucalyptus lime from SHC and am waiting for them to arrive. I might try the Ylang Ylang next time because so many people rave about it. Have you used CV bars, too? If so, could you give me your assessment of the differences between the two?
Re: The Shampoo Bar Thread
:) You're welcome autumn leaves. Build up can be annoying so I totally understand. A while back I tried the curly girl method and naturally curly forum tips and tricks for enhancing my natural waves/curls for a while and had good success (pics in my album somewhere) with shampoo bars.
I haven't tried CV bars though, sorry! I had such good results with SCH bars I didn't see the need to order from anywhere else. I did order a sample from Henna Sooq and was really happy with it and I've tried a few other handmade local soap bars with varying degrees of success.
