Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
My hair has a little wave so it shrinks a bit. If I stretch I’m at the top of collarbone, but looks shoulder. I’ve been averaging 1” a month since I cut it chin length in October 2017. I’m hoping to reach apl at the most June, but if I keep up with 1” a month it will be late April. Collarbone to armpit is 3” on me.

Curlies, where is your APL? Lol. Will you consider APL with bouncy newly washed curls or with them outstretched? My hair differs like 2" when newly washed and second day slept-on hair.

Depends on the curly! And I'm pretty sure someone is calling both, just because. I don't get nearly as much shrinkage, but I do measure stretched and will call APL stretched as well. But for me I just have to brush it mostly-straight for that! And then I'll call BSL by visual and unstretched.
I think it depends on where your is at, as well. Is your length goal stretched or curly? If stretched, then call stretched. If curly, then call curly!

Thanks! Yeah, that's great advice. :) I'm nearly there on second day hair, lol, so I think I'll wait until I'm there full curly.
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
I just took my monthly photo and it looks no different to last month
Should I expect a visible change in a month?
It’s my first time taking monthly photos
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
Yep and nope!
SO supposedly average hair growth is about 1/2 an inch a month - some people seem to think this might even slow down in the winter months & speed up in the hotter summer months and Dec / Jan is pretty wintery.
Plus If your hair is at all curly / kinky - all the growth you gain gets eaten up by the spiral - pull a strand straight and you can see its gotton longer, let it ping back and where did all the length go!
Plus sometimes even if you're just a bit wavy / whurly this can happen / your hair might sort of alternate between a couple of months growth making your hair look thicker, then eventually another months growth & you can see improvement in length etc.
Plus when your hair is a pixie grow out there are more little markers forehead to brows, top of ears, in your eyes, cheekbones, nose, lips etc.
Once you grow from chin to shoulder thats like 4 ins and then shoudler to armpit is another 4 / 6 inches.
Plus the shoulder line is kind of rounded and indefinite so 15 inches at about shoulder can look the same as 2 months time 16 and a bit inches at shoulder.
Basically unless you have any problems with health that may affect your hair, or your terminal length is shoulder, generally your hair is growing nearly all the time. You wont be able to see the difference and then one day you will!
Even though you can barely notice a difference month by month, You'll compare a photo 6 months down the line to the original and you'll clearly be able to see the difference in length.
I think finger nails are supposed to grow at the same rate?? so if your good at growing your nails they might give you an indication as to how much your hair has grown - only a few tiny milimeters every few weeks but at least you have a visual and know its happening!

Unless you are one of those people who grow 1 inch of hair/month (people that fall into the same category as dragons and unicorns for me), then no, you shouldn't expect a visible change in a month. Given that the average monthly growth is 1 cm, that will only be very obvious if you had stick straight hair.
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
That’s actually comforting to know I am expecting too much
I’m glad as it means my hair is probably still growing averagely
I’ve made a shirt with markers of 1/2 inch on to monitor growth to help me see the changes which I’ve started as of today so nothing g to compare it to yet
I’ve noticed my hair is also on the wonk even more so and at the back too
Part of me wants to trim it all straight but then part of me is too nervous to lose length and feel like I’m not growing
I think I’m going to leave it for now and see how long I can cope with it
I guess I’m just venting I know nobody can really make my decisions for me but I do appreciate everyone else’s thoughts
Re: Calling all who are growing shoulder to APL!
fhairyqueen For what it's worth, mine never looks like it's grown month-on-month, but the incremental changes really do add up. I just posted one year's hair growth over on this thread. While the monthly growth never really shows, a year is quite a lot!
Had some nice curls going on the other day after letting it dry with no intervention (pic courtesy of the glamorous confines of the better bathroom at work). It gets curlier than this, but this is without scrunching or curl cream or anything, just oiling and letting it be.

Also, I'm usually constantly fiddling with my hair, I can't leave it alone for more than a few hours, and I generally have to take it down and put it up again at least once in the workday. However, today I managed not to touch it ALL DAY! :cheer: I bunned it for my shower this morning, intended on doing something that covered my ears, forgot, and the bun stayed all day and would have stayed all evening but I took it out when I got home. I'm pretty sure everyone here knows this already, but I really love my knitting needle U pins!

I never looked at the bun until I got home, and I was surprised to see it was actually kinda nice looking! I'd assumed it was a mess, like the front (all the wisps, all the time, super flattering with my big ears!), but it was a busy day at work and I somehow managed not to feel self-conscious!
