Anyone found a way to do nice smooth pinup style hair without any heat implements?

I love pinup style hair and I was trying to learn how to do some styles before giving up heat styling. I really want to look more put together at work and more professional with nice looking hair. The waves are nice and all from air-drying, but I don't feel professional when I look like this.

...thoughts?

For starters, how long is your hair?

Could you provide a link to a pinup style? When I think of pinup, I think of 3 inch crimped hairpins, but I have a hunch that isn't what you are thinking about.

Look up victory rolls if your hair is long enough you can do them on the sides and have either braid waves or sock bun curls with the rest of your hair. None of that would require heat and would look fab!

Skip the back comb you don't need it.

The problem is my hair is never smooth if I air dry. I get all kinds of hairs sticking up everywhere and bumps and cowlicks. I don't mind waves on the length, but it's the front around my temple I don't know how to fix that so that I can style....

Style while your hair is damp I get "fairy wings" too. Damp styling lets me avoid those and skip most of the hair spray as well. I have curly whurly hair so if I let it dry completely I have no hope of smooth styles, especially if I am letting some of my natural curly crazyness loose in other parts of the style.

I have APL length hair currently, but it's very thin and fine.

Is styling while damp a no-no?

My favorite is to do two victory rolls on top (a la Betty Grable) and put the rest of the hair in a snood. You still get the look but it's easier to pull off with long hair and no heat because you pretty much just need pins, the snood, and practice.

Aloe gel in water fixes my front hairline every time. I spritz it on and then brush or comb and it stays smooth.

I love pinup styles. Fleur de Guerre is the queen of victory rolls - skip the backcombing, use aloe in water instead of hairspray, and you can use a rat if you want or make a padding pouf from velvet and sponge if you need more 'pouffiness'.

ETA: styling while damp isnt a no no if you're gentle. I always damp bunned when I had long hair, and so long as you comb rather than brush you should be OK.

Is aloe juice the same thing? I was in the store the other day and they had a 99.9% pure aloe juice.

I do pin-up styles at least once a week and I never have to use heat to get them. Pin curls are going to be your friend. They take a long time to set as they have to dry COMPLETELY before you take them out. If they are the least bit damp (from humidity, sweat, etc.) they will not work.

Here is a good tutorial on how to set the pin curls:

Vivid Makeup: Pin Curls Pt. 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lMz4CZllso)

IGNORE her tips on adding heat. You DO NOT need to add heat to achieve the curls. Just time. She also has a "Part 2" where she talks about styling the pin curls here:

Here is an example of a simple ponytail that I used after setting my own pin curls:

1940s and 1950s vintage hair is all about "The set". Feel free to message me if you need any help. I do these sets for my friends all the time!!

ETA: "Bettie Bangs" are also easy to mimic if you don't want to commit the way I did. It's a quick way of achieving the vintage look!!

This was done with Classic+ hair. Long hair isn't necessarily an impediment to Victory Rolls, but it gets in the way a little! ;)

On the other hand, because you can take smaller sections of LONG hair, you don't need to rat it up to get the desired thickness: all that length in there does it FOR you!:D

You have to bobbypin it very securely, though, if you aren't ratting it: firm hold is the other, and more important practicality-wise reason to rat your hair.

If you do need to rat it, smother it in conditioner when you get home and work it out verry carefully to try to keep it hair-friendly, and I wouldn't rat it daily.

I think, Lisa Freemontstreet has some nice styles for your hair: https://www.youtube.com/user/LisaFreemontStreet/videos
Her hair is beautiful, not very long and fine, and she does some great styles!

This was a no heat style that I did for my wedding in December. We did Victory rolls at the front on both sides, and then pin curls for all the hair in the back and dampened it with water. When it dried we took the pins out at the back and let the curls fall, then sprayed it with hairspray. (yes, the horror!)

This was BEFORE all that damage, back when my hair was about APL.
